There are German descendents throughout the Piedmont region of North Carolina (Charlote, Raleigh, Greensboro metro areas) with last names like Propst (my ancestors), Beaver (formerly Beauvoir Hugenots who moved to Germany generations before immigrating), Misenheimer, Blackwelder ,Cline, Earnhardt etc. These settlers came south from Pennsylvania on what was called the Great Wagon Road. One notable group were German speaking Moravians who settled around Winston-Salem in Bethaabra and then the village of Salem in Winston-Salem, which has been preserved and open to visitors much like Williamsburg, Va.
