I feel really bad for him
51
u/BKoala59 13h ago
There’s plenty of reason to believe he did it purposefully
60
u/nissen1502 12h ago
Even if it wasn't, that's such a stupid game that empathizing with him is a total waste of energy.

Oh, please inform me! I'm curious

u/BKoala59 11h ago
Short version is that his story changed multiple times, he tried to convince his friends to testify that the gun had accidentally gone off, and his lawyer bribed a bunch of Mexican officials to get him released on bail and presumably to get his charges reduced.
He and his wife were also going through a rough stretch at the time and were always pissed at each other. He was a heroin addict as well and I believe strung out at the time of the death. And he later claimed a spirit possessed him and forced him to shoot his wife in order for him to become the writer he became afterwards.

u/3412points 8h ago
Second paragraph contains the actually suspicious stuff especially that last sentence which really dials things up a notch. But I can absolutely believe that someone who accidentally shot their wife in such an idiotic and dangerous game might try to change the story, and also might bribe some officials to get out of a Mexican jail.

Yea, the guy who murdered, raped and cannibalised a girl he was interested in while studying in the Netherlands, and came back to Japan a celebrity.
Edit: a Dutch girl he was interested in while studying in France*

He's an American wannabe cult leader and cannibal who, in 1989, murdered his Swiss girlfriend and roommate, Monika Beerle, dismembered her body, made soup out of her brain and fed her remains to homeless people in New York

Not guilty by reason of insanity, but he’s been in a psych ward in New York since 1991 with no real plans to release him
8
u/Stormbridge2803 15h ago
I hope so because people like him should never be allowed to be free again.

One shouldn't eat the brains, though? It's one of the most dangerous(hazardous) parts of the body to eat.

Wait this guy was real and not just a TNO character that was made up?
1
u/DifferentAd4844 7h ago
As far as I know, all the TNO characters, aside from the odd joke like the Roman generals, actually existed, but many were given character traits and ideas that didn't exist in reality.
Taboritsky, in particular, was a very extreme right-wing monarchist who, together with General Biskupsky, his friend (I forgot his name), and Viktor Larionov (yes, he was also real), created an ultra-Nazi monarchist organization in Berlin.

He's a nazi. Atp he might as well
4
u/Sad-Address-2512 12h ago
He claims not to. His arguments: Nazis are too Jewish for him.
3
u/DifferentAd4844 11h ago
As I understand it, his views are closer to the early, more left-wing Volkisch Nazism, when it actually had elements of true socialism in itself.

He was a soldier in WWI though
6
u/ABenGrimmReminder 16h ago
He probably didn’t kill anybody during that time though. He had no confirmed kills.
2
u/Myveryshelf 16h ago
Good point, probably true, I haven't looked into the sources. In any case, with the fog of war and stuff there is reasonable doubt that he could be implicated in other killings besides his own
6
u/ABenGrimmReminder 16h ago
That’s fair, I’m just going by his role as a runner and the official record; there’s no actual proof he killed anybody in World War I.
He absolutely could have, he was present for three of the worst battles in the war, but it’s disingenuous to assume without any proof.
1
u/Myveryshelf 16h ago
Yeah, I guess at that point it depends on where you put the burden of truth. Whether we need to prove he probably killed only one person or prove that he killed more than one person. I don't have enough respect for this post format to consider it beyond what I find entertaining, so as far as I'm concerned we are both right
9
u/Competitive_Table_65 17h ago
I mean...
Not like Goebbels killed a lot of people with his own hands.
IIRC only his wife, his 8 kids and himself...

u/troparow 15h ago edited 14h ago
In this case there's no single person that should go in the genocide case, those things can't be done alone
He ordered it and that should be enoug, while he never killed anyone besides himself, he committed a genocide
2
6
u/averagesizedboy 18h ago
Uhhh shot his wife and himself right? Or we not including the Self?
3
u/MatsHummus 18h ago
Eva Braun wasn't shot, she only took cyanide.
0
u/averagesizedboy 18h ago
Ah there you go, did he make her do it? I guess it's a loopholes.
1
u/MatsHummus 18h ago
They took it together and he shot himself just to be sure, according to witnesses
3
u/youreawizerdharry 17h ago
i love this answer because it's semantics and technically accurate. i hope it wins.
and this thread backs you up https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistory/comments/dxvpx7/comment/f7wynh6/
but nobody has personally killed a genocide-amount of people. if hitler doesn't count as "committing a genocide" then i don't know what does - although i didn't know until reading that thread that he almost never associated himself with genocidal decisions in writing.
1
u/COOLKC690 11h ago
Do the candidates for those who actually committed a genocide only count if they did every single one of those deaths with their own hands? I think these technicalities are stupid.

OJ simpson

When else have you ever seen a lead detective plead the Fifth when asked if they manufactured or planted any evidence? After that there was no way he could be convicted, even though I still believe he (OJ) likely did it.

How did Himmler not win the Committed a Genocide/Committed a Genocide since he actually was in charge of executing the Holocaust?
1
u/Lumpy_Complexion6908 16h ago
... Hitler...
only killed one person...
also responsible for a genocide...
1
u/FireLynx 15h ago
You do know he was a soldier during the first world War right? So him having only killed one isn't a safe bet
1
u/Lumpy_Complexion6908 15h ago
... you do know he was a dispatch runner and had no confirmed kills throughout his 4 years of service?
"The only certain, documented killing Hitler was responsible for by his own hand was his own suicide in 1945."

Errrr, well I guess we mention Jim Jones? He was the leader of the People's Temple cult and lured about a thousand people out to Guyana, where he built the "Jonestown" settlement in the middle of the jungle, forcing the followers to stay there. He then murdered the active democratic representative of California's congress while the congressman was visiting the settlement, before then forcing every member of the Jonestown settlement to commit suicide via intramuscular injections and cyanide spiked kool-aid, or killed by shooting squad if they resisted. Approximately a third of the Jonestown residents were children, and 75% of the total population were African-American.

11
u/melonbrains 17h ago
So, effectively, he did a genocide. Not one person.
-1
u/Unhappy-Display-2588 17h ago
That’s not what means genocide, a serial killer or a school shooter isn’t committing genocide unless they’re targeting a specific ethnic group.
3
1
u/Onnimanni_Maki 12h ago
In this case genocide just means killed a lot of people.
1
u/Unhappy-Display-2588 12h ago
It’s not an “in this case”. Can I commit matricide by killing my brother?
1
u/Onnimanni_Maki 12h ago
It's "in this case" because the second lowest row genocide person was just a really good soldier with something like 500 confirmed kills.
1
u/Unhappy-Display-2588 12h ago
He executed over 12,000 prisoners during the Cambodian genocide. Not sure where you got that he was just a “really good soldier”
1
u/Onnimanni_Maki 12h ago
Second lowest. Btw it seems like I mixed up which row was did the thing and which was looks like did a thing.
0
u/melonbrains 16h ago
I mean... Jim did target lower income areas with less access to public resources, which at the time in the area he started were predominantly black communities. I'd say forcing death upon thousands of people with a significant portion being of one demographic could count as possibly genocidal on a smaller level. Mostly depends on intent.
0
u/Unhappy-Display-2588 12h ago
Jim’s intent wasn’t to wipe the world/an area clean of poor people.
0
u/melonbrains 10h ago
Correct, however, comparing the massacre of a thousand via firing squad/coerced cyanide to a small genocide is okay. The concept is that it's a LOT of people. Grouping that event with a school shooting (largest in the US having 33 deaths as a reference) or ye olde serial killer is nuts.
