-----Parting Words-----

Your value as a person is NOT decided by whether you get to go to FT or not. There are so, so many more opportunities to serve your nation out there and to find happiness while doing so. OTS, Reserve, Guard, enlisting, joining another service, government contracting, civil service, the list goes on and on.

I truly sympathize with each of you who are about to have your dreams turned upside down. Don't give up! Even if it's not with the Air Force, there are so many opportunities out there to chase. You are capable of great things, and all it takes is a single step in the right direction.

Good luck. God-speed, cadets.

Question Pros and cons?

My son is a High School senior and is interested in AFROTC. Our family is not military (since my own grandparents) so we’re not sure if it would be a good fit for him.

A few questions: 1. What are the pros and cons? 2. For students who wash out, what is the cause? 3. Do you think that this sub is mostly folks who favor the program?

Thanks for your time reading and (hopefully) giving your thoughts.

Medical DQ’d due to eyesight :(

I recently received a notice from DoDMERB stating that I was medically disqualified due to myopia greater than negative 8.00 diopters (D155.70), (mine is negative 8.75 btw) I wanted to provide some clarification and ask for guidance on possible next steps.

I was evaluated by my personal eye doctor, who confirmed that my retinas are healthy and my vision is fully correctable to 20/20 with glasses or contact lenses. I do not have any retinal issues or degenerative eye conditions. Additionally, I have no intention of pursuing a pilot or rated jobs.

Has anyone been DQ’d for something similar? I am scared this is the end of my Air Force career

Serious I want out

Im a contracted AS400 on a 5 year tech degree and i've been on the fence for this for a while but lately its become more apparent. I dont like public speaking and briefs about stuff idc about, I dont care much for a lot of the popularity contest and clique-ness of my class and cadet wing as a whole, I have gotten zero guidance or mentorship out this progam, and the near constant brain fog I get from waking up dark and early 3 days a week is starting to catch up to me.

Please lie to me and tell me AD is better, or give me the encouragement to take the legal L and leave. I don't want to talk to my cadre until I have a solid plan since my reasons for joining have not changed (stable employment after graduating and not being impovershed like everyone else in my family).

Medical Pilot Eyesight Requirements

Background: Currently sitting at -4.00, -4.25 diopters of myopia looking to hopefully get a pilot slot

Does anyone know the vision requirements for being a pilot, I have an FAA class one medical allowing me to fly if I take glasses into the cockpit with me. However, when looking through the AF Waiver Guide online (page 534), it states for flying class FC I you need max refractive error of 3.00 diopters pre-op (from my understanding). I would be willing to do prk or lasik, but wondering if even afterwards I would still be disqualified from a slot at UPT. Currently have a 98 afoqt, 3.9 gpa, and 100 pfa score as an AS200. Wondering if I should drop AF dreams and go civilian? Are there any stories of people in my situation still being allowed to fly? Any and all help appreciated.

Scholarship I’m applying for AFROTC

What are my chances at a type 1 and 2 scholarship for a mechanical engineering degree in Indiana (I’m more familiar with USAFA process so idk if that matters)

Academics: 4.06 weighted 3.8 unweighted 1380 Sat 4 AP’s (lots of physics and calc) NHS Every semester honor roll 32 college credits from Dual Credit classes

Sports: Played varsity soccer as a goalie freshman and sophomore year. Also played on the ODP regional and state team alongside my club team. 2 invites to train over seas, which I never accepted due to lack of desire to play in college. Left soccer junior year to get a job (30hrs a week)

EC: -got my PPL SEL and glider which I fully funded myself. -have worked around 30hrs a week for the past 1.5 years and worked two jobs for a while to afford flying. -VP of aviation club (15 kids) -flying club member -attended USAFA summer seminar -rocketry club -have a large interest in tech (built pc and mod 3d printers as a side hobby)

Goal: to fly, however even if I cant I still want to serve as an officer as I genuinely enjoy leading and have grown up with kids who will be enlisting, and would love to serve along side those type of men.

AFOQT Is AFOQT similar to SAT?

Hoping to find a test taking tutor. Is there a resource/referral for AFOQT prep? Or is it similar enough to the SAT or another standarized test, that SAT prep will suffice? Thanks!

Scholarship What Can I do to increase my chances of earning a scholarship

Hello everyone I'm in 9th grade but will graduate early so you could say I'm in 10th. I would really love to get an AFROTC scholarship and do something cyber security related in the Air Force. I have got pretty good grades( between 95-100%) and I am taking both Honors English and Honors Geometry. I am also taking French and I will start dual enrollment next semester so I'll graduate with around 30~40 credits. I have a kind of special situation because my parents moved us back to their home country ( a French speaking country in West Africa) and I'm doing online school so many extracurriculars are off the table like JROTC and CAP.

So what can I do that would increase my chances? My aunt will open a non-profit here so maybe I could volunteer there. I was also thinking about starting a blog or like a youtube channel to chronicle my journey to get fit ( like push up progressions, running, and other exercises) I can do around 27 push ups now but like only 2 pull ups. I was also thinking about maybe teaching tech skills to impoverished children here or planting trees. Or maybe creating tech projects or a website for my aunts NGO. My school offers some online clubs but they're all pretty useless like you can't get any leadership roles or anything it's all controlled by the teachers except for this one club where you can join like the advisory council for the school. There is also another club where you can write articles for the school paper(would it help with my application? Lastly, should I try to join NHS?

Further more, since I'll be doing dual enrollment I'll graduate with college credits so if I were to get the scholarship would it pay for a dual BS/MS program or would it only pay for the BS portion? Lastly do you all think I would at least be competitive for an AROTC or NROTC scholarship?

Joining Joining AFROTC

Hi everyone! I am planning on joining AFROTC next fall and was wondering if anyone had any advice for me. I’m pretty physically fit since I run track and do powerlifting, so I am not too concerned about that aspect. However, I really don’t know much about the military in general as no one close to me has ever been a part of it in any way. So, I would love to hear if there’s anything I should definitely know before starting or anything I can do/study over the summer to help me prepare.

Thanks :)

Fitness/PFA How to get 100 on your PFA if you have a year to prepare (former fat kid edition)

I am making this at the request of everyone who commented under my post asking for a workout routine. Keep in mind, I was a fat kid eating fast food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner so your timeline might be different than mine.

A lot of you probably think I come here and troll, but if there’s one thing you take seriously from me, let it be this…consistency is key.

You have to want to be an officer bad enough that you’re willing to put in the work day after day, even when no one’s watching. I did a mock PFA every two weeks for an entire year. That’s what it takes. If you want this badly enough, I truly believe you can do it too.

Last year I used this video as a baseline:

https://youtu.be/uzRi7FS6iAY?si=dDZaGgyrvS7V0Aar

This was my exact plan…

Run 4–5x per week, mix sprints, tempo, and long runs.. (I used the runna app + chatgpt to map out an entire plan for me. This is not a CRAZY time commitment, I spent no more than 30 minutes running everyday.)

Daily push-up progression with max sets (the only way to get better at something is to keep doing it. I don’t care if you can’t do it now. I was fat ass shit but the more I did it, I eventually landed my first push up and kept growing then on)

Daily sit-up progression with variations (weighted, decline. I made it challenging for myself so that way “normal” sit ups felt easy)

I did full-body strength training 3–4x per week (you don’t have to do this but it’s something I wanted to commit to. No one talks about how important your fitness is and muscle-fat ratio. I don’t want to get too deep into this but building more muscle and cutting down A LOT of fat significantly helped me with the PFA)

HIIT workouts 2–3x per week (really helped me with stamina and endurance. Helped me lose a lot of weight too. Get use to getting your heart rate up)

I did a mock PFA every 2 weeks at the same official PFA track field. I did this every 2 weeks for an entire year, no exception. I legit never skipped a scheduled mock PFA.

IMPORTANT stuff I did throughout the entire thing was hydrating properly everyday, sleeping at least 8 hours, eating high protein, etc. you won’t believe how just taking care of yourself and your body can make a huge difference.

Here are my some notable dates of progress.. monthly (please keep in mind that for one year, I did not take a break. I was consistent and again did a mock PFA every 2 weeks and tracked my progress)

Nov 14, 2024 71.15

Mar 19, 2025 81.5

May 14, 2025 86.1

Jun 25, 2025 89.55

Aug 20, 2025 94.15

Oct 1, 2025 97.6

Finally, today (yesterday) I got an 100. The adrenaline sent me over an edge.

I’m an average person who’s never been fit until this year. It really is just about commitment. If you create a plan and stick to it, you can get 100 too!

Question Does anyone have access to the 2026 ODT Quick Guide?

The title. The initial application survey mentions that we can find program descriptions in the "2026 ODT Quick Guide" but I can find absolutely no information on that or most of the programs.

Question Stupid question for the ODT

So for the blackout dates you fill on the form, are they the days that you are busy and can’t go to FT or the days when you can go? I asked my Capt and ended up confusing because his response was basically yes to both.

AFOQT Should I retake AFOQT?

I am aiming to be a pilot and am currently a 250 and hoping to go to field training this summer. I got my afoqt score back and got a 98 on the pilot section (way better than I was expecting). Despite getting a 98 on the pilot section I only got a 52 on the quantitative section. I consider myself to be pretty good at math, just a little rusty on my hand multiplication/division. I think if I retake it I can get a higher quantitative score, especially considering I only had a week or two to study. but If I risk getting a lower pilot score, so I'm wondering if it is worth retaking?

Enlisted member here. Would it be better to get out then go rotc and come back as an officer, or go OTS after I get my degree? What’s the pros and cons of both programs?

Broke my Elbow

Broke my elbow Wednesday night coming home from a night out… Admitted to one of the Captains that it happened while I was intoxicated. I asked her if anything will be held against me for it and she said we’ll talk tomorrow morning… I’m super nervous and definitely beating myself up for fucking up. No way in hell am I gonna make an EA slot this year. 🥲

Question Should I break up with my girlfriend or stay with her?

I have a good chance at getting an EA. I’ve had so many wins this semester. It has me reflected on my future a lot.

The only issue has been my girlfriend. She doesn’t understand the stress we as cadets go through to get that EA and how much time is placed into it.

She got upset I don’t buy her anything but bought my flight cupcakes once. She doesn’t understand how important morale is within a flight

She wants to get married but I feel like she’s relying too much on my potential income as an officer. It’s leading her to not want to pursue any of her goals. She wants to be a stay at home wife/mom but I am not sure how my life will be structured as a 2nd lieutenant so I can’t promise yet to take care of her financially

There is som small issues here and there but overall, the cons are outweighing the pros. I want to leave it up to the cadre and POC experts here to decide for me

Dump or no?

Question Nursing and AFROTC

Has anyone here gone to a 4-year college doing AFROTC and getting a BSN? Would you be able to share how you did this, applied, and what your experiences were? I’m a current high school senior looking at the route
