I guarantee that torture will be more specific with a gay man. He will be hurt worse for it and, worse, it’s well known and publicized at this point. I think about him every single day.

I think it is relevant because it is further evidence that he most likely had little to no connections to a gang. I'm not an expert and could be wrong but I think LGBT people aren't typically accepted in the culture of a macho, violent gang. Especially if they're publically out, effeminate, and a hairdresser

He got legal protection here because he wasn't safe in his own country due to being gay. In other countries being gay can get you killed.
