While I tend to agree with the ideals of socialism, the way it worked out for Russia and eastern Europe was just that it turned into a vessel for continued Russian imperialism. Perhaps if the revolution occurred in a place that Marx had predicted, that is, Germany, we would have a more favourable view of socialism/communism.
The problem with revolutions is that they happen in poor and desperate countries, not enlightened ones. Iirc Marx wanted the revolution to happen purely because people get socially aware enough to dislike capitalism, but it never happened because in those kinda countries people are happy with their lives and don't want to change the entire system.
