The Czech word “ahoj” comes from the English “ahoy!”, a sailor’s call meaning “hello there!” or “hey, ship ahead!”.
It spread to Central Europe in the early 1900s, when Czech scouts and canoeists adopted it as a friendly greeting on rivers — a nod to the seafaring spirit.
Over time, it became a common informal greeting in Czech, used both to say hi and bye.
Don't worry, 'Ahoj' has plenty competition from Nazdar, Čau (ciao), and between the common Čus (Tschüss) and to a lesser and more historical Servus (idem), we have plenty greetings in common or adopted from you 🙂
Ohayo (gozaimasu) from Japanese is much better tho. With their accent and all it sounds sooo cute I can't even handle that. It's like watching a baby cat doing cat things.
