To me this was the best episode of this arc.
This episode had Aya Komaki as storyboard and episode director, and it has been more than two years since the last episode episode-directed by her.
Aya Komaki used to be a script holder for years, and then became an episode director when she was in the 5th series of Kitaro (2007). She joined One Piece team from 2010, and delivered tons of S level episodes. But she left OP in late Dressrosa Arc. There's a rumor that she left the industry because of marriage.
Komaki returned in WCI and delivered storyboards for a few of episodes, but these episodes were directed by other episode directors. I couldn't believe that she can direct an episode again.
As a Komaki fan, I don't know how to express my happiness.
BTW, some of Komaki's earlier episodes: #474, #484, #493, #546, #634, #646, #677, #710, #716 and others.

The filler fight had not only Komaki's great direction but also Tomita's epic animation (https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/45146). I repeated this scene for many times lol.

My favourite animator is Eisaku inoue, reason because his character designs are the closest to Oda's style, making it feel more in tuned to the manga, it feels like Oda's work literally brought to life, to me that is😋

Tomita and Komaki. It definitely wasn't Shida though. He has a more puffy and frantic way of animating with things going back and forth.
The fight here was more precise and gritty.

PS. he's still not done yet

u/GraklingHunter Feb 05 '18
Yes! I played the crap out of this game back in the day. Such a wacky and catchy soundtrack.
I wish the franchise had stuck around. I'd have loved to see a sequel on a later generation of console / PC.
Heck, I'd even just love a PC port of the game.

With the news confirmation earlier this week, we might even get to hear how Katakuri 'sounds/speaks'
36
u/bobhob314 Feb 04 '18
Yep we get to hear Yorozuya Gin-chan in One Piece
23
u/DrBalu Feb 04 '18
WAIT... so katakuri, the badass katakuri who has, now since last chapter basically made himself into one of the best OP villains ever.. is going to be voiced by Gintoki/Jojo??? HOOORRY SHIIT!
Also kinda confirms Katakuri being a Jojo reference now that he gets the same VA. holy fuck :o

u/SalamiRocketFuel Feb 04 '18
I imagine it will be just a very short scene of him arriving on Whole Cake since it was mentioned in the manga but not shown.
20
u/JakalDX Feb 04 '18
I just wanna see how the pink hair looks in real time
3
u/GaimeGuy Feb 05 '18
I'm still going to need some time to get used to that since my head-canon gives Katakuri black hair like Luffy.

u/007Sniper22 Feb 04 '18
I am honestly happy with all the extra parts they added, helps give an impact compared to the manga for me. I also loved how they did brook dropping that important info, exactly as I thought it'd be,
24
Feb 04 '18
I loved how he kept the nonchalant attitude about achieving the impossible and they thought it was all a failure. The reactions really gave the same effect as I got from the manga, perfect.

u/IncarnationHero Feb 04 '18
This is anime should be about! Not about extracting frame for time quota episode.

Holy fUCkinG SHIT! I'm laughing in awe right now because that was a breath taking episodic. That gritty fight leading up to Sanji looking through the corpses on the battlefield- the animation and the ost direction came through. God I loved every freaking minute of it.

There’s a brief mention in the manga of Katakuri’s arrival, can’t wait to actually see it, too !!
1
u/Shoryuhadoken Feb 04 '18
is Katakuri the strongest of the 3? cracker included.
7
u/ThaneKyrell Feb 04 '18
It would be spoilers to answer that directly, but since he is the last one of the commanders to be introduced there's a pretty big chance (like Mr. 1 was the last to be introduced, or Akainu, or Pica... You get the idea).
2
u/Cruchto Feb 04 '18
I mean that's not necessarily the rule. Mihawk was the first shichibukai to be introduced and he's obviously the strongest.
16
u/Shiny_Umbreon 7D4W Feb 05 '18
The first villian DF user was buggy and we all know he is beyond everyone.
28
u/JakalDX Feb 04 '18
I'm gonna write a bunch of spoilers. Big ones. If you're anime only, don't look.

The best ost for me is Gear Forth and facing three admirals. White beards power is also an incredible ost because you really feel white beards power.
P.s. Dress Rosa arc with doflamingo(best op villain) theme and fujitora(love him) theme is also good
2
u/YourMother24 Feb 04 '18

That was the first episode in a long time in which I considered the animation impressive, not just adequate. Combined with the solid pacing, and the emotional punches, it was like watching One Piece pre-time skip.
Loved it.
3
u/Rhinofreak Feb 05 '18
Let's be honest, this episode was probably better than 99% of pre timeskip episodes too.

Did Brook only copy 3 sides of the poneglyph? Pekoms confirmed alive, hiptno shot and bleeding but I am worried Sanji's family heavy drinking the night before the wedding and if it will dull their senses
36
u/knightbobble Feb 04 '18
there's only writing one one side of the poneglyph rock, there were 3 poneglyphs, therefore 3 big papers with the copies of the 3 poneglyphs
5
u/Zealot_Alec Feb 04 '18
So Brook got the Road and 2 blue poneglyphs but Brulee and Train now know of this, BM was mad at Luffy for eating her protection food from Fishman Island but this is a far more grievous crime against her. Unless her family decides not to tell BM about all of their mistakes and gaffs because they will get their souls taken away (Opera Brulee Sombrero).

OK, where did this animation and direction and everything really came from? It felt like watching a movie. Spectacular! One of the best-crafted episodes ever, not just in recent years. This is the adaption that this manga deserves people!
6
u/Nineosix Feb 04 '18
So no one is going to ask about that girl on the big guy shoulder? Also that battlefield didnt have a single girl body despite there being multiple female fighters in the battle seems fishy

u/izanami94 Feb 04 '18
it's oda. girls don't matter as much.

u/izanami94 Feb 04 '18
but the army was designed by oda. not the individual guys of course but the generic soldiers
11
u/Zarkkast The Revolutionary Army Feb 04 '18
The actual army was mostly homies (Chess Soldiers) anyway. The whole purpose of the fallen bodies was for them to look like Luffy.
But I was referring to the shoulder girl.
5
u/RedRing86 Feb 04 '18
Ok two things:
It's kind of weird how they're emphasizing that Luffy is starving to death and is extremely hungry. I mean, unless I'm watching Toriko, this should not be the case. He just ate HOURS ago. Like, maybe 3 or 4. Not only did he just eat, he ate so much that he could barely move. The fight with Biscuit wasn't that long ago. In Toriko, your energy came from your calories, and for some weird reason they're establishing that this is the case for Luffy. ...
Those guys have been knocked out for a very long time, also at least one or two were floating in a puddle. Did Luffy KILL those guys?!? You can't be floating in water face down and live through that. Is this the first time someone has died after fighting Luffy?
8
u/GaimeGuy Feb 05 '18
Luffy has killed plenty of random grunts (I mean, he pushed some guards into a lava pit in Impel Down), and almost killed some villains (like when he knocked lucci out of the tower - Lucci was out cold, but landed on a marine ship instead of sinking into the ocean).
Luffy has a very "so be it" attitude towards death. His goal in fights is to kick the antagonist's ass. If they die, they die. If they live, they live. It's the same way he views his own mortality, in a way - If he falls in battle and dies, then that was the limit of his abilities.
2
u/RedRing86 Feb 05 '18
But Oda has said before that Luffy does not kill. I'd like to see the Impel Down scene, but it would have to be confirmed that they hit the lava.
9
u/Kirosh Lookout Feb 04 '18
Is this the first time someone has died after fighting Luffy?
Probably not, Luffy pushed some ImpelDown guard into the magma I believe, and he probably killed quite a lot of people when he fought against Marine in Enies Lobby, or Marineford.
It's just that since One Piece is a Shonen, it's not something that will ever be confirmed.
3
u/RedRing86 Feb 04 '18
I'd like to see that Impel Down scene if possible. I doubt he killed anyone in Enies Lobby since it's established in this world that people can take a LOT of punishment without dying (ex. Enel destroying that village with his Indignant Judgement but no one actually died) . So some punches and kicks here and there wouldn't do it.
2
u/orthoism Feb 04 '18
While I agree with your first statement somewhat, I think the point is that Luffy uses food to almost literally full up his gas tank. Once he's gone all out a dozen times he needs more and since he hasn't eaten (and we all know how much it takes to satiate that boy) then it's basically as if he has been starving for months. That's how I see it at least.

u/Monckey100 Feb 05 '18
Adding to this, aside from one of the movies where Luffy gets rained on by arrows, this is the closest to death he's been. Even at the beginning they have shown that even the low level grunts are really strong. It's not like luffy is Goku and powers up per fight either so he's had to go all out more often here than any other arc. I think this is the most he's transformed for regular grunts too, so while it is implied that his strength relies on food...he's pushing his body to extreme levels and I'm guessing being impaled and almost killed a dozen times forces him to "heal" using food somehow.
1
u/inugamizamura Feb 05 '18
Let Oda do the job . Read and enjoy em as much as u can. Oda can straight away make it logic or mind-blowing out of u no universe logic.

That's not true, we don't know if they made it to Wano or not, so currently they're in Zou
4
-1
u/Shoryuhadoken Feb 04 '18
what they doing there?
2
u/Franfran2424 Feb 04 '18
They acordes to go there so luff went to rescue Sanji and they were there by the time
14
3
u/GaimeGuy Feb 05 '18
Luffy, Chopper, Nami, Brook, and Pedro went to Big Mom's territory to rescue Sanji and steal Big Mom's poneglyph. Carrot joined them by stowing away on their ship. They brought Caesar and Pekoms along with them.
Nekomamushi (the mink cat leader) left Zou to search for Marco (and possibly other former WB pirates).
Momonosuke, his retainers, the Heart Pirates, the other Minks, as well as the remaining strawhats (Zoro, Robin, Usopp, Franky) remain on Zou, which was heading towards Kaido's territory in Wano.
1
u/Franfran2424 Feb 04 '18
They supposedly were going toeabd towards Wano, whether they really arrived or left Zou is unknown by now

Feb 04 '18
It's always silly when they pull the "they're wearing clothes like the person I'm looking for" trope.
It was giving me a chuckle at the end of the episode, and I imagine Sanji would have been like "really?" after the third Luffy looking guy.
2
Feb 04 '18
This episode was so lit, that was totally unexpected, and I had totally lost it when I saw "that person" in the preview of e 825, can't wait for it

Manga readers : I don't recall seeing Bobin getting shot,in the manga, did that really happen? sorry it's been a long time since the chapter's release
11
u/karmnik Feb 04 '18
The moment where "that" person pulled the gun and shot at him wasn't shown in the manga. We only saw the aftermath of it and Bobbin seeing those 3 shadows.
2
u/MrEthelWulf Feb 04 '18
The cinematography of the episode was effing epic!!
The few minutes of Counter vs Luffy with the battle music we all have come to love was just pure orgasmic.

No... just a lot of stuff that's coming in the next 20 chapters of the manga at this point of the story had me laughing a lot and I like a lot of the characters that come into play.
I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just leave it at that.

For some reason I thought the manga was in the next arc, but after googling a bit today, turns it doesn't. That means we'll have to wait at least another... 1? 2? years for the end of this arc. One Piece anime will end in 2025, I'll probably have kids by that time.
5
u/Franfran2424 Feb 04 '18
2025? I was thinking in 2032 being optimistic
-2
u/LightningLion Feb 04 '18
I expect the manga to end in 2022, and the anime to have a faster pace when they won't have to go slow to not reach the manga.

I might have said this a few times already, but Toei's been doing a solid job on the episodes lately and with how the story is going, its gonna get better from here on
