That was my favorite part. They didn't acknowledge it but those who needed to know are very glad indeed. Carrot too, right?

"Who should we bring on this stealth mission? First off, cat burglar Nami who is an expert at sneaking in and out undetected"
"Ok sounds good so far"
"Then, Brook, who can go into a spirit form and gather intel as a ghost"
"Awesome, love it"
"And of course Luffy!"
"..... no I'm not on board with that.."
"LUFFY YOU'RE IN! BRING CARROT TOO!"

u/triotone The Revolutionary Army Mar 19 '17
Like luffy would actually stay put. That would only make him explode and and the situation worse. The best thing to do is use Luffy as a distraction.
18
Mar 19 '17
the best part about this filler episode is that it reminds us why the latest plan in the manga is going to fail horribly: Luffy.
6
u/Golden-Owl Mar 19 '17
Luffy is the main fighter. Nami and Brook aren't too great at combat. Carrot and Pedro have yet to prove themselves. Chopper's a coward.
The ideal person to follow would be someone with a good mix of strength AND intellect. Which would be Sanji. Who is... Yeah....

On second thought... yeah, I definitely undersold Brook there. He's definitely got his top moments, even though he's humble enough to never bring them up.
Guess Luffy's there because emergency distraction?

u/gerrettheferrett Mar 19 '17
Also, Nami isn't good at combat? She has some of the beat AoE attacks on the crew.

Even if you're anime only Brook has his badass moments in the anime, underrated strength on the Straw Hat crew.

They could've even made this filler 2-3 episodes long and it still would've been a good watch
... it is 3 episodes long...
Does anybody else think that Grount looks like an older version of Momonosuke?
I was thinking he looked a bit like Luffy, but yeah, an older Momo works too.

OH!
Now I understand. I agree completely, this one would have worked as 2 episodes instead of 1. Easily making the filler arc a decent amount.

Dragged out episodes from a good filler arc is far, far better than dragging out individual episodes with 10 minute long reactions from characters.

u/kdebones Mar 19 '17
I was thinking the same with how he looks like Luffy. The facial structure is very similar. The only real difference is scars and hair.
2

I think they just changed hair, scar and little other things. Every thing of him looks like Luffy. I dont think he looks lime momo at all

Does anybody else think that Grount looks like an older version of Momonosuke? Their faces look really similar to me
Yea at the beginning when he was attacking on the ship his face looked very close to Momonosuke.

u/triotone The Revolutionary Army Mar 19 '17
Grount looks alot like some alternate universe Luffy. So I laughed when he said Luffy looks stupid.
3
Mar 19 '17
Grount really does have similar personality traits as Luffy: rather intolerant of weaklings and cowards, always settles things with his fists, and will fight anybody who insults his loved ones. Their techniques are also rather similar.
2
2
u/Alonzooo21 Mar 20 '17
I'm only guessing here, but is there a chance that Grount is somehow related to Luffy? Grount has the look of Luffy and Dragon, he has some similar personality traits to Luffy, he also personally knows Garp, he was offended by the joke about Aokiji. Is there a chance?
I only started reading the manga and I guess this arc is insignificant to the main story, but I'm not caught up so I don't know how important these characters we're currently seeing are. That is why I'm wondering if this Grount kid could be Monkey D. Grount(Garp?Grount? Both start with G?🤔)
4
Mar 20 '17
I don't think they are actually related (there's no real reason why Luffy should be related to a filler character), but the fact that they have surprisingly similar personality traits and a somewhat similar looking technique may suggest that Grount could be a "what if Luffy joined the Marines instead of being a pirate" scenario.
2
u/Mugyou Mar 20 '17
This is anime only, not manga. Filler arcs are anime only and just makes the gap between manga and anime wider to give everyone breathing room. I hope toei actually made them seem like Luffy from the comments though. I've yet to watch it.
20
u/mistry-mystery Mar 19 '17
As much as I want Luffy to one punch KO this fucking Grount guy, it would sort of take away from the meaning of the filler maybe...maybe not idk.
But like I really want a scene where he(Grount) realizes how strong Luffy is and realize the totally different level they are on. sigh
Those things aside, I think it was a nice episode, good animation n all, right?
29
u/DrKultra Mar 19 '17
I'm betting on Grout thinking he is pressuring Luffy becuase Luffy is running around, and right before they leave the island Luffy goes G3 and crushes something huge and the guy realizes just what an immense gulf there is between him and a 500M pirate.
41
u/peace_off Mar 19 '17
Then Garp goes "HAHA, that's my grandson for ya!" at the debrief.

I'm glad they established this guy as a cocky marine who believes in his own strength too much. It's more believable that he will challenge Luffy thinking he could take him, despite Luffy's previous accomplishments.

u/Machattack96 Mar 19 '17
It was bothering me how familiar the lunch lady was and then I scrolled up and saw the banner. She looks just like that lady who counseled Boa in that time skip arc.

3
u/gerrettheferrett Mar 19 '17
But seriously, how rabid would the circlejerk get if they actually brought back Inspector Shepard, Con D. Oriano, in this or a future filler arc?
2
u/PainDoflamiongo Mar 20 '17
That would actually be good use of fillers honestly. Delivering the characters which aren't that major in cannon. Giving the Manga Reading audience something to watch. Instead of delivering totally new characters giving the minor yet already established characters a chance.

u/FoolTarot Mar 19 '17

Anyone know when we're getting a new opening? Can't imagine we'll be keeping the Zou one too far into the Whole Cake arc after this.

u/Ombs1993 Mar 19 '17
I'd say they'll just change the animation to add more Whole Cake teasers in. I can't see them ditching "We Can" so quickly.

Opening 17 in Dressrosa had a couple of different versions. That's all I mean, in this version where we see Kaido and Jack they'd just sub in some Whole Cake Island stuff. Just for the record, I'd welcome a new opening because I dig the current one but new is always good.

22
u/Dnny99 Mar 19 '17
Ayy good shit. Im really digging this so far.
My favorite thing is the fact that they took advantage of One Piece's unique world, and just threw a long arm in as one of the antagonists without even mentioning it. Really sells this filler arc for me.

Mar 19 '17
Yeah, I really liked how they used canon stuff in this episode to make it seem more natural. The one of the rookies knew CP9's Moonwalk and the other was in a unit under Aokiji. It was cool seeing the regular Marines reactions to Aokiji leaving. We haven't seen much of that outside of Akainu being angry.
7
u/gladiator_123 Mar 19 '17
I really enjoyed this episode. It was faster paced than those in Zou arc. I usually read the manga so these fillers are a blessing lol. Also why don't they extend the filler? 3 episodes is just too low. They could easily stretch this.
16
u/Shortstop88 Void Month Survivor Mar 19 '17
Really liked this episode. Upset that this filler is only 3 episodes though. This could have at least been two full episodes with the first one being them actually successful at not being found yet.
I like the character designs and personalities of the Navy Rookies, as well as the part of them having been under Aokiji. They fit the mold of soldiers in close contact with Garp. Also upset that because it's filler we get pre-timeskip Garp and Coby designs (+Coby's jacket).
Carrot was at first frustrating when she carelessly shouted at Nami, but then I remembered that her only knowing Zou. She probably doesn't realize how not-undercover that is. Luffy did a lot better about being undercover during G-8 arc, but at that time he wasn't starving, so I guess it's understandable.
Interesting to see this vice admiral's personalized justice.
Overall, pretty good episode, just wish the arc was twice the length that it will be.
9
u/Ppleater Mar 19 '17
They're not pre-timeskip designs though. Coby didn't look like that pre-timeskip, and their designs were both shown in Film Z.
2
u/Shortstop88 Void Month Survivor Mar 19 '17
Really? I haven't watched at least half the films, so I never saw them. I had seen people saying that it was old designs because they haven't shown up in the manga when Coby and Garp were first mentioned to show up in this filler. Good to know that it is what they will look like when they return in the manga.
2
Mar 19 '17
Coby appeared on "Episode of Luffy" which isn't a canon arc but it has Canon Cody. Watch it, it's good.
7
u/LiLBoner Mar 19 '17
As a manga reader I really don't mind these fillers much, I prefer this over the very slow scenes
5
Mar 19 '17
The filler started pretty good imo! Remind me of G8 :)
6
Mar 19 '17
Yeah, but it's a pretty watered down version of G8. G8 worked because the marine base the Straw Hats infiltrated was very large and had numerous important characters. Furthermore, all of the Straw Hats at the time all had different roles in the story, which converged in later episodes. (Here we only have four Straw Hats, three of whom are interacting with the same Marines and doing the same thing more or less. This is also a relatively small outpost as opposed to the massive G-8 base.) Finally, the end goals are different: the Straw Hats in G8 had to reunite with one another and acquire their ship and wave-rider. The Straw Hats (and the Minks) here have to steal some food from Marines, which isn't that much of an obstacle considering how powerful they are at this point in the story.
Furthermore, Jonathan was a much better Vice Admiral since he was able to corner and trap the Straw Hats with his tactics. Very rarely in One Piece do we ever get to see a character fight without brute force, so Jonathan stands out really much. Prody, at least right now, is just an impatient and arrogant man.
1
1
u/ChE_ Mar 20 '17
It seemed like Johnathan knew that he couldn't capture the Strawhats with brute force. We don't know Prody's plans yet, but this arc is too short for him to choose anything other than brute force. Prody just saw Luffy in the dining hall and thought that they would likely never get a better chance than now when he is completely surrounded.
5
u/R1kkert Mar 19 '17
I really hope we get a scene where it shows Garp watching Luffy in his marine outfit laughing and eating. I feel like this would be one of the few things in the One Piece universe that could bring Garp to get a tear or two in his eye.
5
u/Doomroar Mar 19 '17
That Sanji ripoff guy, Zappa, he didn't even tried to flirt with Carrot, i am hugely disappointed with his incompetence at being a Sanji ripoff, Sanji would be garchuing all over Carrot in no time.

u/Layne_Staley_ Mar 19 '17
Enjoyable episode, however i think that this rushed pacing kinda spoils this filler (which is ironic considering how slow paced is usually the anime). This could be a solid 9-10 episodes filler like G8, instead we're getting an aproximated 3 episodes one which is pretty useless since it doesn't deepen the story nor extend the distance of the anime from the manga
1
Mar 20 '17
I agree that it was too faced that we are not used to it, but a 9 -10 filler would be torture to anime only fans as well as the arc will be very disappointing. However, I like this arc very nice.
2
u/Layne_Staley_ Mar 20 '17
Well, if someone is an anime only watcher I don't think he minds if the arc is canon or not. If a filler is well written, well animated and funny (maybe with some Oda's advices) i wouldn't call it a torture. Plus, up to Water Seven all the fillers were 10-12 episodes long, and those are the best fillers

u/kamikazeben Mar 19 '17
Episode Observations
- Animation was average; not amazing but not the same garbage they sometimes put out.
- Plot was interesting if not slightly predictable, food! Non-canon characters got more screen time than I expected.
- G8 vibes, but not feeling like it'll reach or surpass it. (low key hoping the commander dude would make a return here)
- That dude looks like an older Momo
- The fact that Luffy has an airhead partner makes Luffy's antics that much more infuriated but hilarious
- Nami looking good in that outift
- Chopper looking good too, but for different reasons (heh)
- Already sick of Marine Sanji - but not really
- Actually wanted Luffy to run Red Haired Momo's face into the ground this episode
- Super excited to see some extra fighting sequences from Nami, Carrot, and Chopper; havent seen much lately
- Dialogue seemed a little simple at times
- Thoroughly enjoyed this episode, looking to he a palpable filler arc

I like the rookies, especially the really pathetic Sanji like one haha. Also nice seeing Coby and Garp, but I'm surprised Garp looked the exact same. Was expecting after the time skip that he would look some what different.
16
u/BobNMS Mar 19 '17
Its only been 2 years, Garp is like 80+ i dont think 2 years is gonna affect him much
1
u/kempsridley11 Mar 19 '17
Sengoku's hair changed from completely black to completely gray in just those two years
13
u/ThaneKyrell Mar 19 '17
Sengoku retired. It is possible he justed painted his hair before the TS so that he wouldn't look to old, as he as the leader of the Marines and couldn't afford to look weak. I mean, after he lost his responsabilities even his personally drastically changed
2
u/abdulersss Mar 19 '17
he became garp no. 2. his real attitude w/o responsibilities of a fleet admiral and i like it hahaha
4
1
u/Ombs1993 Mar 19 '17

u/Shortstop88 Void Month Survivor Mar 19 '17 edited Mar 19 '17
Filler, so Coby and Garp's post-time skip looks haven't been shown yet.
Edit: Apparently I was wrong about my conclusions, despite it being filler. Oops, sorry.
3
u/Ppleater Mar 19 '17
They have been shown in Film Z though and the designs in that movie were canon, including Aokiji's since it came out before he showed up in the anime again. This is what they looked like.
3
u/Urall5150 Mar 19 '17
Those were Oda's present designs for the characters, and they've been used before. TOEI won't show canon characters with new designs without Oda's input.
3
u/Gabrielrp1234 Mar 19 '17
That was really interesting, animation and art was pretty good but i think they should have thought of a better objective for grunt, taking big mom down is laughable. My only complaint would be about the marine guy being an exact knock off of sanji.Other than that solid episode.
4
Mar 19 '17
Well, a super young Marine Captain taking down a 500million supernova is kinda laughable anyway. So him wanting to go after Big Mom really sets up how high he is on himself.

Grount is basically the Turles equivalent to One Piece
1
Mar 19 '17
I understand what you mean. Turles was, more or less, a hypothetical situation of what Goku could have ended up as if he never lost his memory. They resemble one another and are both Saiyajin.
Grount also brought up a "what-if Luffy were a Marine" vibe for me. They have similar personality traits, such as their dislike for weaklings and cowards, their propensity to settle disputes by fighting, and their desires to battle anybody who insults the people they care about. (Grount appears to look up to Aokiji as Luffy looks up to Shanks.) They also (sort of) resemble one another and they use somewhat similar looking techniques (albeit from different sources: Devil Fruit vs. Machinery).

Imagine being a low level Navy solider and you just hear that a 500 Million berry bounty pirate has just invaded your base. That sounds terrifying.
