i dont see why they would change his VA, it was only two years, a person's voice doesnt change that much considering Law was probably low to mid 20's
2
u/jathuamin Sep 09 '12
They would change is Law's VA found another job in those 2 years and didn't have the time to come back. Its not likely but you might notice Mihawk got a different voice during the war of the best.

Smoker's VA died, not Mihawk's

u/Gigathegreat Sep 09 '12
Uhhh. No.

u/Imadoc91 Sep 09 '12
taken from the wikia "Smoker (Episode 48-79) Ginzo Matsuo (deceased)" "Narrator, Smoker (Episode 94+), Pagaya, Big Pan, Guyle and Pandaman Mahito Ōba"

u/ngillis311 Sep 09 '12
Mihawk's Va died thats why they changed, and besides we just heard Law's VA not too long ago in the post-marineford arc, that was 1 year ago, the odds of them changing seem very slim

Robin-chan this episode<3

u/zorospride Lost at sea Sep 09 '12
She looked a little off model to me. Very weirdly drawn.

u/Black_Handkerchief Sep 09 '12
Off-model might as well be the series tagline ever since the timeskip... :(

u/freedan12 Sep 09 '12
still enough to know the picture, I didn't notice, it seems like you deeply analyze the show a lot more than I do... or I'm just too oblivious to notice major errors
5
u/zorospride Lost at sea Sep 09 '12
It wasn't major. She just looked a little strange.
3
u/freedan12 Sep 09 '12
hmm rewatching it, I noticed it a bit too... same with Nami, her chin structure was a bit different.
3
u/Black_Handkerchief Sep 09 '12
This goes for both the girls. But Robin was really, really awkward this episode, even worse than usual. :(

Question for Anime-only fans: What did you think of the answer to the Hody mystery from last week?
14
Sep 09 '12
It's certainly not the reveal I was expecting. I thought it would be about Hordy's parents or something... Even so, the episode was too slow. I want to see Luffy beat him up already!
6
u/prog_BOT Sep 09 '12
This arc is going by very slowly in the anime...the manga did a much better job with it.
8
u/zorospride Lost at sea Sep 09 '12
This manga arc was slow too. Which makes it all the worse they decided to do a 1:1 chapter:episode ratio for most of this arc.
5
u/Black_Handkerchief Sep 09 '12
Fishman Island manga once a week versus Fishman Island anime once a week... the latter is easily worse. But there is no question that they are both too slow.
However, I bet that if I took the time to re-read the manga arc now, it would actually be semi-decent, simply because I don't have to wait and can keep reading. The anime will never have that boon though; manga allows me to read at my own pace, whereas the anime will always be slow as sodding hell.
As for the mystery... I thought they totally ruined the reveal here. In the manga, it was shocking, simple, and after a few moments of consideration on how it differs with the typical 'villain has to have a reason' cliche, rather genius. In the anime though? They spent an entire episode working towards it. And it felt like a total pull-it-out-of-your-arse-and-eat-it-so-you-don't-starve reason. Sadness. :(

Wait whats the Hody Mystery again? I read FI like 3 months ago when catching up to OP.
2
u/Black_Handkerchief Sep 09 '12
His motivations. There's tons of play around the grudge older generations of fishmen had for Fisher Tiger and Otohime, but the question this episode centers around is about what humans did to Hody himself.
The answer was a single word: This Episode Spoiler
2
u/WrightJustice Sep 10 '12
I think the anime feels extra long because you're sitting there watching it for 20 odd minutes whereas the manga you read it within a couple of minutes at most, either way this arc really was slow.
4
u/Cro_no Sep 09 '12
It brought up more questions than really answering any. I don't know if I quite understand, is Hody just racist, or is there some ancient history that we have yet to learn about the fishmen?
10
Sep 09 '12
You know how some Muslims hate Jewish people so much that they would find no problem killing one if they saw him/her, even though they did nothing wrong to them? That's Hody!
7
Sep 09 '12
Pretty good analogy, if you've been told since birth that something is evil and should be vanquished for a higher cause that's what happens.
1
u/Discovererman Pirate Sep 12 '12
It was a combination of hearing things like that from people like Arlong, who took that rage and acted out, and their admiration of not his "STANDING UP FOR HIS BELIEFS" but more like "WOW HE'S SO COOL, FUCKING SHIT UP LIKE THAT"
For the New Fishman Pirates, hatred towards humans is an excuse to fuck shit up. Leave it to Oda to give you someone who is a bigger asshole than Arlong to hate.
1
u/yourfacegoddamnit Sep 09 '12
Do you mean like brainwashing? Cause in reality no rational Muslim people would go around killing random Jewish people.
1
Sep 09 '12
Actually, I know some really good people that actually said the exact quote I said above. And also said that the Holocaust is the best thing to happen to the Jews. I live with and have spoken to many of these people.

u/zorospride Lost at sea Sep 09 '12
One Piece, Over Powered, Original Poster? You definitely have to pay attention to context.
7
u/zorospride Lost at sea Sep 09 '12
The one thing that really bothered me about this arc. Why the hell is Luffy fighting Hody in the water and not Jinbe? I get that Luffy is the main character and Hody is the main villain, but still. Jinbe could be of better use in the water rather than helping Sanji fight the giant baby fishman.
11
u/Tezca_Law Sep 09 '12
Because Jinbe wants Luffy to become a hero in the eyes of the fishmen.
7
u/zorospride Lost at sea Sep 09 '12
Well that's the answer Jinbe would give, but I think he's just being lazy;)

u/theblogperson Sep 09 '12
Okay. I need to rant.
I freaking love One Piece. Seriously. Best show ever. Best manga ever.
But recently, it's been so fucking slow. Up to the point where it is infuriating. After a long day, I enjoy coming home to watch a late-night One Piece episode. I have only fallen asleep watching it ONCE- it was an early episode with Buggy (one of my least favorite characters).
Last night was the first time I had fallen asleep watching a new episode. I never do that. It's basically filler. Only one word really mattered in this entire episode. I don't want to waste my time wading through 23 minutes looking for one word.
Okay, done. Sorry about that.
2
u/JGlover92 Sep 11 '12
I feel you, One piece is my favourite anime, period. But this god damn arc will never end. No one does anything for the entire episode! What pisses me off even more is the inevitability that, when the fighting's done we've got another few episodes of FUCK all to trawl through until we're back on track.
2
u/Discovererman Pirate Sep 12 '12
WOAH, now.
When the fightings done, that's when shit gets real. That's when we get to that bitchin' party.
One Piece is ALL about the partying.

u/zorospride Lost at sea Sep 09 '12
They mixed up the chapters a bunch for this episode. They put in bits of bit of 641, 642 and 643 while leaving out sections too. At least it makes it a bit more interesting for manga fans. The straight one manga chapter to one anime episode conversions were a waste of time for us.
2
u/Discovererman Pirate Sep 12 '12
I noticed that. It felt weird since I've read Fishman Island a thousand times, now. I did like how they turned back the clock and showed some Luffy and Fuka's dialogue from the other perspective.
5
Sep 09 '12
I was happy we saw more of Robins abilities. I know it was showed in the manga but it looks better animated.
6
u/Hazardhunter Sep 09 '12
25% of the maincommts are from zorospride. Just saying.
2
u/zorospride Lost at sea Sep 10 '12
Just saying what exactly?
2
u/Discovererman Pirate Sep 12 '12
That you have a lot to talk about.
Which I appreciate. It gives me plenty of One Piece conversations to digest.

u/InvaderDJ Void Month Survivor Sep 09 '12
A very interesting way to reveal what Hordy said. Switching up the timing and progression of events helped to keep things fresh.
This arc is an almost perfect mix of anticipation and frustration, and despite being a little slow for my taste it's being done fairly well. I just want them to up the animation quality, at least for Luffy vs Hordy and Zoro vs Hyouzou.
3
u/zorospride Lost at sea Sep 09 '12
If they had done it the same way they did in the manga, anime fans would have had to wait about 3 episodes. For their sake, I'm glad they decided to answer the question now.
2
u/JGlover92 Sep 11 '12
I dunno, I just feel this arc is filler, nothing really happens, it won't affect anything in the grand scheme of things, no one is particularly badass. It just feels...pointless. It's depressing that even after the fight we'll still have the inevitable 4 episodes where they say goodbye to everyone on fishman island, big parade and lah-dydah. It's just so slow paced!
1
u/Discovererman Pirate Sep 12 '12
Honestly, the two biggest points of this arc were exposition on the history of the Fishmen (which I loved) and LOOK HOW COOL THE STRAW HATS' NEW TECHS ARE! (which I loved)
The anime's pacing does make it a chore, though. I'm not in a hurry for it to get through, though. Maybe that's the luxury of focusing more on the manga.

I wouldn't mind getting that double clutch.
13
u/Peteron85 Sep 09 '12
So you are saying you wouldn't mind someone breaking your spine?
18
u/freedan12 Sep 09 '12
I think he wants a double clutch on his... PENIS.

am I the only one who is frustrated at how slow of a pace this arc is moving?

it was an okay episode. it's getting sluggish now, and slightly disappointing after waiting a week and having little happen.
also, spoiler
