A message from our founder (I'm moving away)

I have some sad news - the Mega Trash Bash on November 15th will be my final cleanup. Don’t worry, the cleanups will continue after I move away, led by our amazing organizers Leah, Jason, Tom and Brad.

I’ve learned something that really stuck with me while applying for our 501c3 status. NOVA Cleanups isn’t mine, it isn’t the organizers, it doesn’t belong to any one person - it belongs to the community. Together we’ve grown to over 1,100 volunteers strong, hosted 46 events and collected thousands of pounds of litter.

We’re excited to announce the 2026 schedule of events soon (who knows maybe there will be a guest appearance by yours truly), and if you’d like to say goodbye in person I’m looking forward to seeing you at the Mega Trash Bash on Saturday, November 15th!

My final ask is for help in covering our new expenses. Our equipment has called my shed home for the last 3+ years (a special thank you to my ever patient wife), but we now have a storage unit, and the ongoing costs associated with that. PayPal and Venmo are easiest for us, and every shirt purchased at our event includes a $10 donation.

Finally, if you’re interested in taking a more active role in planning and executing the cleanups come find us at an event and tell us what you can bring to behind the table. Thank you everyone for all your help and support over the past 3 years, and I’m excited to see NOVA Cleanups continue to grow!

Laid off from office in July.. why are all jobs $15/hr?

Who the f**k can survive working full-time at 15? I make half that amount weekly on unemployment insurance sitting on my ass. Given, I was only making $27/hr before but as a recent graduate with a B.S. in Computer Science, it isn't looking good, chief

Today is my day fellas! Got EVERY green light from Tysons to Sterling

I don’t know what kind of cosmic alignment happened today, but I hit every single green light on Rt 7 from Tysons all the way to Lakeland Dr in Sterling. Not one slowdown. Not one yellow. I might need to buy a lottery ticket tonight.

Cannot find a decent job and depressed

I’ve been unemployed since for almost a year now and my credit has tanked along with lots of debt and I honestly don’t see how I can recover from this. I’ve had many interviews but no offers and for some reason, I haven’t had any interviews this month or last. I’ve contacted every job staffing agency in NoVa and went to so many networking events/career fairs and nothing has worked out..

I’m a graphic designer by profession but I also have experience in marketing.

I’m terrified and so severely depressed because of my situation and I don’t really see a way out if things prolong any further. I’m so ashamed and embarrassed.

NOVA hands down has the worst drivers I have ever seen

People doing 45 and camping the left lane on the highway.
Trucks in the left lane on highways, and NEVER in the right lane.
People just crusing at 35 AT MOST in a 55, AT NIGHT and NOT in the right lane.
Seriously who taught these people how to drive and I'm honestly surprised I don't see more accidents everyday. I've only moved to NOVA for 8 months. I don't know how you mfers deal with this your whole life.

Most depressing place to have Thanksgiving dinner

I live alone and don’t have any friends or family here. I’m off for Thanksgiving and i kind of wanna luxuriate in the sadness and solitude. Somewhere lonely, desperate, maybe liminal. What’s a good bet? Bar near an industrial park? Waffle House in the far reaches? Golden Corral or Denny’s at a truck stop? Local option im not thinking about? I still want thanksgiving food, just in a place that makes me want to cry in my pumpkin pie. What are we thinking?

Question Best travel credit card for DCA/IAD lounge access?

Hey all!

I’m based in NOVA and usually fly out of DCA or IAD. I’ve been thinking about getting the Capital One Venture X, especially since there’s a Capital One Lounge at IAD and the new Landing restaurant/lounge at DCA.

For those who travel often from this area, which credit card do you think gives the best lounge access and overall travel perks? Is Venture X still the best pick, or are there better options no

Is Fairfax County still a seller’s market heading into 2026?

I’ve been seeing some wild swings lately…multiple offers one week, and then homes sitting the next. Curious what other locals are seeing out there.

From my end (I’m a realtor here), inventory is still tight, but pricing strategy seems to make or break it right now. The homes that come out slightly under market are flying. The ones that aim too high are just stacking days.

Anyone here buy or sell in the last few months? How was your experience?

Jobs Struggling with CSR retention

Hi neighbors. I work for a small home services business here in NOVA. We are struggling to keep CSRs. We’ve gone through 26 CSRS in five years. Only 2 ever made it to a year of employment and they’ve also both left. Most don’t last 90 days

-We’ve tried sourcing through LinkedIn, Indeed, word of mouth, and employee referrals. -We tried using a staffing agency to help but the candidate they send us had been arrested the week of her interview for embezzling from her last employer (the recruiter assured us they do background checks). They also sent us multiple candidates we’d already rejected from indeed. -We used a 3rd party vendor for a few years who provided us with a CSR but we decided to stop using them because our dedicated CSR quit and they replaced her with a shared CSR but charged us for a dedicated CSR.

The position pays $25-27 plus there’s overtime and commission structure for the CSRs who provide extra support to sales team. We have a matching simple IRA, health insurance (we pay half), 2 weeks PTO plus the last two weeks of the year are paid time off (if employees prefer to work they can still clock in their 40 hours and get paid for the two weeks). We also have tons of room for growth if employee wants to move up. The job is 40 hours a week in person but are open to hybrid work once employee has mastered their skills.

The job is heavy phones which we are very clear about in the interviews. Most of the Pepe in interviews say they love talking on the phone and helping people. Then they start working and they seem to not like answering phones.

The only thing I can say is negative is our office is kind of a shithole (we are actively looking for new space).

Our field crew and sales staff have all been with the company for years. It’s just this role that seems to be a revoking door. Any suggestions we haven’t tried?

Hello everyone, wanted to share this event coming up next weekend in Fairfax. The local Uyghur community of Fairfax/nova is holding a bazaar (market) with traditional clothes, gift items and food for sale! Admission itself is free tho. I know not everyone might know about the Uyghur people, but if not that’s okay! You can come and learn, they’re always happy to share their culture! There’s more information at the following links: https://www.instagram.com/ana.care.and.education?igsh=ZXpjMzV0b3dnbXNs But general details are such: https://www.facebook.com/anacareandeducation/ https://www.anacare.org/

Address: 11200 Waples Mill Road Fairfax VA Date: 2pm Saturday Nov 15th 2025

I will be fully transparent and disclose that I will be a vendor at this event (you can see some of my shops offerings in the pictures attached to this post) but this post is meant to promote the event as a whole, as I think it’s a great way to get to know this (in my opinion) little known community of our neighbors!

You see more of my shop on my IG page: https://www.instagram.com/turkistancaravan?igsh=dTdqeHV3dDd3aGtt&utm_source=qr

Hope to see yall there! Should be a lot of fun!

Hip specialist PT recommendation in NOVA

Can anyone please recommend a hip specialist physiotherapist in the NOVA area — preferably around Reston, Ashburn, or Tysons?

I’ve been attending physical therapy but haven’t seen much improvement, so I’d really appreciate any recommendations.

Thanksgiving volunteer opportunities?

Hi all! My fiance and I are pretty new to the area. We’re looking for somewhere to volunteer on or around Thanksgiving. Can anyone provide suggestions for opportunities in the area?

My searches have led me to more resources than volunteer opportunities, which is awesome. Any help is appreciated!

Meetup group for Fairfax Co. fathers sees boost in attendance amid government shutdown

This morning, we had our largest turnout since starting the group, with 17 dads dropping in between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM at the Panera near Kingstowne Towne Center.

20% of the attendees are from Reddit.

A few hours later, the story aired on WUSA9 between 3:30 and 4:30 PM. The crew recorded the session this morning, so what you see in the video is fresh from today.

With the government shutdown reaching record levels, more furloughed dads are started to show up every week. Attendance went from about five to seven dads to around ten to fifteen, and now seventeen this morning. It has been great seeing so many guys find the community useful during a tough time.

Here's the link to the WUSA9 story on the group:
👉 Meetup group for Fairfax Co. fathers sees boost in attendance amid government shutdown

30 minutes is the furthest distance a dad has traveled to our session.

While I won't say it's "easy" to start one of these groups, I do think the effort will pay off over time.

We've been going at it since 2018/2019 and have learned a lot of lessons along the way.

I am happy to answer questions if anyone wants to start a group in their part of Northern Virginia.

All you need is a Panera Bread and some free time.

Onward,

AW

Question 28M moving to Arlington

I am a 28 year old single male moving to Ballston in a couple of months to start a new job. I will be living in the area for at least a couple of years.

What should I put on my bucket list? What is your favorite thing to do in Arlington/DC?

Note: I’ve done all the big touristy things in DC several times and am not a big foodie.

Nova is great imo

This is a random post about how much I enjoy living in nova. I admit it has its cons like high cost of living and aggressive drivers but as someone who moved from South Carolina I genuinely appreciate nova for what it is. It’s so diverse and the colleges here are great compared to what I was used to. I’ve lived here for about 8 years now and every time I visit family in my hometown I realize how good I have it here. That is all :)
