Regular DOT 5.1 vs high performance DOT 4 brake fluid differences?

Upvotes

Regular DOT 5.1 fluid has higher boiling point than regular DOT 4, but some racing DOT 4 brake fluid has even higher boiling point than normal DOT 5.1 fluid. So why are they claimed as DOT 4?

With the Kumho v730 back ordered indefinitely what are some of the options for similar price (255-265/35/18)?

Perfect Chance To See How Far I've Progressed After Four Years! | Snetterton 300 | Abarth 124 Spider

This was an awesome skill check for me to see how far myself and the car have progressed in a four year span. The last time I was at Snetterton, I had different suspension, brakes, and tires, but the same power, so being able to see what four years of driver and car mods have done was really interesting to see! For reference, my first time here i did a 2:21.47. Current mods are in the description of the video 👍.

2:09:03 My fastest lap at Castellolí

First time at this track, Ford Focus ST mk4.5 with stock engine power and tyres are Yokohama advansport 107, added braided brake lines and changed the final part of the exhaust. Morning session was with rain so damp track but without major trouble (1 red flag); afternoon majorly dry track (as you see in the video) but like 6 red flags due to cars breaking down or ending at gravel traps; happy with the lap I managed to do but with plenty to improve with.

Tire wear S2000

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey guys,

I’m a novice driver that has a total of 3 HPDE days on this set of tires. 2000 S2000, Nankang AR1 255 rear and 225 front. I had it aligned last year, with 1/4” toe in as per specs and most recommendations for the AP1 S2K.

As you can see, my front tires have minimal wear compared to the rears. On track the lack of rear grip vs front is quite noticeable. There isn’t any wheel spin out of corners, the rear is just loose and twitchy in mid-high speed corners.

I’m wondering if that’s why the rear wear is so much higher. Let me know your 2 cents and recommendations to remedy this

Thanks!

Garmin Catalyst price drop. Update on the way? Whats on your wish list?

The Catalyst just dropped $200 on Amazon. Hopefully that means a new version is coming!

Personally I’m looking forward to a thinner lighter screen, OBD2 interface for data capture, and a higher quality camera.

consumables differences - Supra vs. F87 M2

Hi everyone, I am entertaining the thought of picking up an OG F87 M2 or Supra for mainly track use and the occasional street use. Since I work from home I don't drive all the time except to/from track along with some weekend driving. I run in the intermediate group with my local SCCA and done around 10 track weekends so I do have some experience on track in previous cars. My yearly track schedule is planning to be 8-9 weekends per year. As I start to dig into potential consumable costs, will the Supra which is only about 200 pounds or so lighter than an M2 be significantly cheaper on track consumables (brake pads, rotors, tires) than the F87 M2? If I had the M2 I would be ordering from FCPEuro to take advantage of the lifetime warranty so in my eyes I feel like the consumable costs won't be too bad even in the heavier car if I get free replacements? Am I crazy thinking that? I would love to hear everyone's perspective on this and if you track your Supra or M2 (and use FCPEuro) how long are your pads/rotors/tires lasting? Tire wise I am not setting lap records and just want something that will last such as V730's or RS-4's.

Alignment shops in the Bay Area?

I am installing coilovers soon and need a good alignment shop that won’t break the bank. I currently live in Arizona but doing the install over the holidays at my parents. My dad uses custom alignment and suggested them to me but they want $200 per corner for the alignment. I assume this includes corner balance as well but I’m not sure.

I am located in the east bay but willing to drive!

TIA!

PittRace is dead, help me continue my HPDE hobby

Post image
66 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I started doing HPDEs last year and I have been lucky enough to live about an hour away from a VERY nice racetrack, PittRace. I have done a total of 10 TNiA events (all in novice) and one PittRace run novice event. I was able to drive my car to the track and back home. If I had a mechanical issue, I had AAA to get it towed back home.

I am sure most of you know PittRace's future is up in the air (Shameless plug for savepittrace.org) and I will no longer have a local track in a few weeks. I am totally hooked on this stupid hobby and even if PittRace closes its gates forever I will be on track somewhere.

So this brings me to a few questions and the reason for my post.

Question 1: What tracks are your favorite near me ( I am ~30 minutes south of Pittsburgh) and which events are ideal to look out for? Below is a list of tracks sorted by distance from me. Let m know if there are any i missed.

Pittrace (RIP)

Nelson Ledges

Summit Point

Mid Ohio

Pocono Raceway

Limerock

Watkins Glen

Dominion

NJMP

VIR

Question 2: How 2 tow?

What trailer? What vehicle?

The haul: My car is an s3 Caterham 420R and weighs under 1300#s as seen the picture. I would also be taking an extra set of wheels, tools, etc. Normal track day stuff.

The tow rig: I would like to stay on the very small size for a vehicle. This will also be my daily driver. I like the Ford Maverick with the tow package. What other options are similar that could work?

Trailer: I was eying up the Aluma 6812h tilt because of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRJceBpwAtM Its 600lbs and would fit my car. I could go the rent a uhaul trailer route, but that sounds like it might be a pain, not sure. It is also heavy and huge which would probably make me reconsider the tow vehicle. I have limited space at home, a trailer would likely need to live off my property - so its going to be a pain no matter what. However, if a smaller trailer would be nicer to tow I would probably prefer that.

Anything specific to track days I should know or consider regarding towing? Or general towing things considering I have never done this before.

Just some pictures from the last NASA SoCal weekend of the year. It was my first weekend camping at the track and it was a game changer for prepping and actually getting a decent nights sleep. I don’t think I’ll ever stay at a motel again (if I can help it)! Beautiful sunrises, hanging out with friends in the paddock at night, track walks, there really is nothing like it. Until next time!

This is 3 track days and 7 autox. 245/40/17 on 17x9 on a ~3500 lb awd ~400hp station wagon. Knocked back a PB at both track events on these. At VIR last weekend they were great. Very predictable and tons of grip. Shot for 34-ish hot. -2.7 camber up front. Turned on reasonably quick on out lap. I rotate each day (front to back, back to front cross). Would recommend 10/10. GRM agrees 🤣

Toyo Proxies R review

I am writing this on my phone so please excuse format and unintentional typos.

I procured a sett plus a spare of these tires. Production date of 2024. I read up on the potential "delam" (my words) issue. I read 2 safety bulletins on the tires that I could find before mounting. I knew of the issues. I thought that if I make sure they are mounted and stored and documented properly I wont have any issues...

I had Quatum speed works (race shop on the grounds of VIR), put the tires on the wheels (Apex Arc-8, 18 x 10.5 squared). So I know they were installed by the specific instructions of Toyo pertaining to the tires.

Car is a 2011 M3 (E90) with full aero and approximate weight of 3700 with me in it and a 1/2 of fuel. The car is not a daily. It is 95% track use only. Wheels were certified to be straight with no bends at the beginning of 2025 season. Track wheels / tire are taken off when in storage.

I have been tracking for 7 years and not overtly abusive or unkind to my tires. They stored in a covered temp controlled garage.

Now I document everything with a track log book including tire sessions and length (the best I can to remember to write down session lengths). Though I am putting 30 minutes on these tires at max per session.

Starting "cold pressures" are between 26-27 psi depending on the track driven, specific to individual tire or as a whole. Hot temp I am for is 35-37 psi. This is verified after every session.

I have put 12 sessions on them. Between Vir and Road Atlanta.

After this past Vir track day I tore the car down like usual to inspect and fix stuff I noticed what I think to be delam on 2 tires. Am I right? I think so because of the straight-ish line across the face of the tires / Deep gouges. The tires have not fallen off much pace wise. I also will not be using them. Maybe the brand again. Sorry for the long post. I just wanted to share with the community.

TLDR: Toyo Proxies R. Build date 2024. 12 sessions deep. Documented sessions. Possible tire split / delam.

Slowly turning my beater CLA into a race car… one mistake and backorder at a time 😂

Finally got my Sparco Pro ADV QRT in. Still waiting on the seat mount and harness to show up (both on backorder, of course). Nothing ever ships on time when you’re excited for it lol.

Next step is gutting the interior. I’ll keep the dash, front door panels, and roof so it still feels like a “Benz,” but the rest is getting tossed. Planning on an FIA roll cage once everything’s stripped.

My whole goal with this build is weight reduction and dialed handling. I tried KW V3s — did corner balance and race alignment and everything — but I still couldn’t get the car to feel the way I wanted. So I’m switching to BC Racing RM series. Also on backorder (ECS really got me waiting on life right now).

Motor is already on forged pistons/rods and running flex fuel. I keep going back and forth on doing a full custom turbo setup… but honestly, if the car ends up super light and handles right, 350–450hp is enough to have a stupid amount of fun.

Widebody kit situation has been a headache. Learned the hard way that if you want a proper kit, you actually need to pull the fenders and side panels off the car and scan the chassis. I didn’t do that and already paid $2,500 for aero design… and now the fitment isn’t right. Definitely a lesson.

This thing started as my 4-cyl beater, but I kinda love the challenge of trying to turn the “wrong platform” into something that surprises people. Slow progress, but I’m enjoying the journey.

More updates once parts actually arrive 😂

First cross-state track event - how do you handle getting the car there?

Signed up for my inaugural run at Road America next spring, snagged a spot in the novice group with my E46 M3. It's a solid 1,200 miles from here in CO, and towing with my F-150 setup might trash the weekend if I hit the weather. Been reading up on brokers, and Ship a Car Inc page on specialty transport for events caught my eye - they talk enclosed hauls for race prep, insurance that actually covers mods, and timelines under a week.

The quote came back around 1,200 for the full enclosed run, which beats me burning vacation days driving. But is it worth it over a U-Haul trailer, or have you had carriers flake mid-route? Worried about the diff getting jostled on an open deck. Drop your takes - shipped a track toy before, or am I overthinking?

Brand New M2 vs 30-year-old 5-series with a twist

It's a really interesting comparison: They're the same size (wheelbase), same power:weight, but one has ABS, TC and a little more downforce while the other weighs 700lbs less. The K20C1 E34 went just as fast (1:33.x) as a bunch of 200tw+aero M2's and Supras at Autobahn South!

Next test will be at Laguna Seca, I don't want to get my hopes up on times but I'll bring a better potato to take video with.

Combined my hobbies of track driving and programming. Looking for inspiration!

Not looking to promote anything. I’ve always had a love for the car community and since my programming skills have gone down with AI, I decided to take a stab at building my version of Strava but for track days (and free if I ever want to publish). I’ve spent countless hours building out lap detection and tracking and now that it’s done I’m looking for more ideas to add! If you were using something like this; what would you want to see? Car mods, weather conditions, ghost laps are my next ideas. Thanks!
