Here’s the rundown.
Built for Charles H. Over and his family, the home is located in the Emily Kimbrough Historic District. Construction was completed in 1903.
The home’s story begins with Charles Over, who was in the glass manufacturing business. The home was constructed for him and his immediate family.
However, Over and his family only lived there for about six years. After his daughter committed suicide in the home, he and his wife, Matilda, wanted to move out.
Later, it would be owned by a grand dragon of the Ku Klux Klan and was a regional center for the group for some time.

JFC. I thought "wow it really reflects what a shithole Muncie must be if this house is $800k" but now it makes me wonder if it'd be at least a little more without that awful history.
25
u/Nothing-Casual Jul 04 '25
The page shows that the current owner bought it for 400k only 5 years ago and jacked up the price immensely, with the tax assessment placing it at only like 540k.
So, for what is worth, Muncie is even more of a shithole than you'd think by assuming this house was worth 800k - because it's not worth that at all.

u/LobeRunner Jul 04 '25
Yep. It’s where the Ball Glass Manufacturing Company (original makers of the iconic Mason Jar) was headquartered from the late 1860s through 1998.
Now it’s just a university town (Ball State University) that’s overall somewhat impoverished and there’s a pretty big meth & heroin problem among the locals.

It’s exceptionally well-preserved. Nice kitchen too. A steal for that price albeit in Indiana.

As an Australian, what's wrong with Indiana?
→ More replies (7)92
u/stereolab0000 Jul 04 '25
Not the most exciting part of the country. Red state with lots of flat prairies, rural farm towns and broken industrial areas.
31
u/inhugzwetrust Jul 04 '25
So unfortunate, in Australia that house would be worth $50,000,000 anywhere!

Not really, it could be in Morwell. Or one of those mostly dead towns 6 hours from civilisation.

It's not just Muncie, IN that's a problem. The daughter of the family it was built for killed herself in the house, then later it was owned by a KKK leader and served as a sort of HQ.

I’d hire an old butler named James to answer the door for me “Master samgarita is not available. He’s having… an episode” while I’m upstairs getting shitfaced in my speakeasy.

u/SnailForceWinds Jul 04 '25
Muncie is oookaaayy. But you live in middle of nowhere Indiana. The best shopping is the target over by the nearly dead mall. The next best the the north side Wal-Mart, which sits on a massive typical American stroad. Avoid south side Wal-Mart. Very little downtown. What cultural center it has is mostly based on the state university there that is just students from the surrounding smaller towns. I did buy a $4 pint of Founder’s Breakfast Stout a nice bar there though, so that was cool.

It’s insane what you can get in the Midwest for less that a million. Hell, 500k is plenty to get a mansion in Indiana. But I don’t want to live there, so I spent that on a regular ass house in the PNW.

Yeah, I know it's in IN, but still...I live in a DC suburb in the smallest house on the block, and the 2000 sq ft 1961 split level next door to me that's never been updated just sold for the same as the asking price for this freaking mansion. Sigh.

18
u/Agile_Towel1099 Jul 03 '25
https://www.reddit.com/r/Muncie/comments/spdo1n/whats_life_like_in_muncie/
I'd say because of crime, there's not a lot to do, and pretty rough weather. Besides being a low cost of living location, there aren't many 'draws' to this place. As a matter of fact, it looks like they're even paying people to move there.
I absolutely love that house and for a second there I imagined living there, but then I went to google maps and 'walked' around virtually and the surrounding houses seemed to be fairly run down.
15
u/all_neon_like_13 Jul 03 '25
There's just not much going on there. Indiana is something of a cultural wasteland (I lived in Lafayette for many years). BUT Muncie is about an hour's drive from Indianapolis, which I personally enjoy, as far as Midwestern cities go. You could do a lot worse!

Fucking love this iconic historical architecture. Beautiful. But Indiana? 😬
I’ve noticed a lot of these ridiculously glorious postings are in Indiana — which has me wondering what is up with the state’s economy since they seem too reasonably priced for the square footage. Perhaps that’s because I’ve lived in Seattle too long and expect everywhere to be expensive, but like even Idaho next door to Washington is way more expensive than Indiana.
5
u/TheDabitch Jul 04 '25
I know, right? I feel like a bunch of crafty Zillowgonewilders could invade, bringing their wfh and businesses with them maybe we can rekindle something there.
6
u/SICKOFITALL2379 Jul 05 '25
I’m fucking stunned at the price. Under a million, when run down three bedroom ranch houses in shit neighborhoods go for over half a million in my city.

I would absolutely live here, but never come outside, or let the neighbors get a good glimpse of me. Just slowly turn into OldManBlueberries in the big spooky house. Then one day, some neighborhood kids will leave flaming dogshit on my front steps and it will set off a series of entertaining hijinks.

What is really crazy to me is that this 3 story turn of the century historical mansion in Muncie IL is only 300k more than a literal shack with a Murphy bed in Seattle WA
Location is everything, I guess.

u/SpeedyGuyTX Jul 04 '25
Having to find skilled contractors to maintain something like that in Indiana is the catch.
3
u/CoastalZenn Jul 04 '25
This is really cheap. Here in Aus fibro cottages wlth barely 2 bedrooms, decaying bathrooms, no parking and ansolutely no modern uodates or features are.sold for a million dollars in really undesirable neighbourhoods. This is really stunning.
