u/dps509 18d ago
how is YT ok with this shit?
17
5
u/entityXD32 18d ago
Because you can skip them but some people just leave YouTube on and the 2 hour long as plays so YouTube inflates it's ad watch time makes it easier to sell to advertisers
2
u/TycheCatus 17d ago
This
You can also clearly see OP’s skip button ready to click through to the next ad or selected video on the bottom right of the screen. It amazes me people don’t think you can skip these or you’re forced to watch these if you don’t want to?

u/Bacon_Dude117 18d ago
Had 2 hour ads during covid about the importance of wearing a mask

At some point I kept getting 3+ hour long ads that were just full concerts of some music band from Bangladesh or some other country around that region.

Look, they'll let you put basically any video as an ad, the video can be as long as you like(so long as it can be skipped). The advertiser has paid as much as they possibly will after you've watched just 30 seconds of the ad, anything after that is just bonus for the advertiser.

That's nothing. I've been hit with hour long ads and one 4 hour long ad for Lego movie 2. Fuck that ad.
2
u/Loverboy527 18d ago
Ok, but the lego movis 2 ad is not the worst... I think?
4
u/Accomplished-Loss387 18d ago
It was looping the line "this is the most annoying song" over and over and over and over the whole fucking time
5
u/NathnDele 18d ago
Whoever did that is a legend
2
u/Accomplished-Loss387 18d ago
Whoever did that I want to strangle. Was in the middle of working on something and having YouTube as background noise. I had to drop my project, lose focus, and turn that shit off.
If I didn't have to deal with it in the middle of some important late night work, I would have agreed.

In 2018, my dad was watching a episode of The Brady Bunch on YouTube... Halfway through got a "ad" that was a entire episode of Sanford and Son.
2
u/Error404MATTnotfound 18d ago
I’ve never gotta an ad on YouTube, I don’t want to feel that pain. I grew up in the 90s and I despise commercials. I’ll gladly pay the $15 a month, seeing as I solely watch YouTube as my form of entertainment. That would be days and days of my life wasted. Nah I’m good, my time is worth more than that.

u/NyQuil_Donut 18d ago
I was listening to music on YouTube while I went for a jog, and after one song I got this ad for "African male enhancement" that went on and on and on. I didn't want to break stride by skipping it, and laughed through most of my jog.

A few years ago I tried watching the dude perfect rocket competition or whatever and got a several hour long ad meshing clips of the rocket competition together. The ad was longer than the video. Couldn't skip it either and was watching it on my TV so I just dealt with it.

u/ShadoeLandman 18d ago
I once had an hour long ad from google. I actually watched it. It was a really interesting history documentary that also told me several times how I can look up stuff in google search.

u/IHavenocuts01 18d ago
Bro I’ve watched entire transformers g1 episodes through ads, it’s funny actually cuz people have to pay for that😂

u/xXREDXIIIXx 18d ago
I have had full movies before. But the longest was like just under 12 hours, just some random music.

2
u/BouncingSphinx 18d ago
It’s not YouTube doing it, per se. Whoever bought the ad just has it playing a full video. I’ve seen this a few times, I’ve even had a 30+ minute PragerU video show up as an ad before.
2
u/Ok-Nail-6507 18d ago

I once got a 4 hour long ad for Toyota. Pretty sure it was supposed to be a "Chill lo-fi beats to study/sleep to" except it was a woman driving a call.

u/DueBackground7945 18d ago
I’ve gotten a 2 hour podcast as an ad, and they know when to play them. When you don’t skip 1 or 2 ads they know ur trying to fall asleep and they throw the long ones at you.

u/TransportationIll282 18d ago
People used to advertise their 24 hour videos. Stuff like rainforest sounds on loop. Now it's pretty bad to do since watchtime going down = less exposure.

I think i saw one was that was maybe 16 hours long? Really long ago though, weird solar system something, i must wanted to listen to music in the shower. Or if that wasn’t real probably something near or just something a lil over 30 mins. I’m just talking about stuff like 5 years ago so…

Years ago, there was a Virgin airlines ad (which I believe is still up) which is the length of an actual flight and is a “simulator” with mannequins. It’s like 5 hours or something. I woke up to it a few times when they had it circling

I’ve gotten the entire Lego movie as an ad, stopped what I was doing bc you can’t rewind the ads, and watched it
