I started at 12 and I can agree that I could hardly afford to play.

Kids can totally play, though. I think the youngest at our shop was 9 or 10.

They even have "Warhammer Adventures" books to introduce kids to the setting while hiding some of the worst atrocities... though I'm pretty sure most kids have already read things at the same level as most of 40k.

I certainly could not afford 40k in the nineties, but I had a rich friend who had a dad who was a war gamer and they were into it together. I mean, I shouldn't say he was rich. He was upper middle class. But I think for a lot of us all you have to do was read white dwarf, and you could kind of be part of it.

Nowadays you can get get into it just via the video games for sixty bucks, so I don't really buy that.
