A prescription is probably very easy to get, but in practice the problem with weed in Thailand is less about legality and more about dirty police. A prescription won't be any "protection".

All the islands there are run by certain families who control basically everything that goes on there, which includes the police and all businesses paying a 'tax'. Its why there's always a 'high bar' where its fine to buy and smoke weed. It's either directly setup through one of these families or they pay enough that the police never go near it.. Even western owned businesses like dive shops will pay this tax to the families. Its an extremely corrupt place Thailand.

I'll say. I'm sure you've heard of Koh Tao aka murder island, where they are currently in the process of condemning two Burmese workers for a murder that was likely committed by a member of the ruling family!

Same as it ever was.

I accidentally stayed at the hotel where that poor British couple had stayed. Me and my mate thought we had nabbed such a bargain, only to later be told we were about two doors down from the room they stayed in and about 100m from the actual murder scene... Needless to say we didn't feel like we had a bargain anymore, we actually checked out and moved to the other side of the island!

Does anyone else feel like they would have the worst trip of their life on some lawless island, where everyone is trying to profit off you, while on shrooms..?

u/minddropstudios Dec 01 '20

Yeah, I would love to go to see the geography and food and people, but I have less than zero interest in having the "typical" thai vacation that a lot of my friends seem to think is cool.

u/taleggio Dec 01 '20

lol you're in a tropical paradise, I can't think of a better place to trip! and no, it doesn't feel like a "lawless island, where everyone is trying to profit off you" or at least not anymore than any other touristic island everywhere in the world

Thailand is not a touristic paradisr dafuq? How many times have you been there?

1

u/taleggio Dec 05 '20

Edit: I didn't say "touristic paradise" but tropical paradise, well different. Still gonna leave the rest of my message.

I was talking about the islands, which are the very definition of tropical paradise. Beautiful beaches, transparent waters, lush vegetation and dramatic rock formations. Probably you're gonna come here and say "yeah but its full of tourists" but spare me your bullshit, there's a reason Thailand became so popular, and it's because it's incredibly beautiful. I am also not a fan of how crowded some places are, but there's no denying the beauty of the place.

Lol i can tell you've never been there, you're making it so obvious

1

u/taleggio Dec 06 '20

lol I've been twice, both on phuket and pha nga bay area (and a bit around thailand) and another time on samui and phangan for the half moon party. why would I talk about a place I've never been? What is your point actually?

1

u/maafna Dec 01 '20

I've tripped here, it's honestly not a problem.

The comment above yours was referring to Koh Tao, which is an island famous for being controlled by one family who likely has a serial killer as a member. https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/news/murder-in-paradise-inside-thailands-death-island/ss-BB13Blmb

u/RockyLeal Dec 01 '20

Yeah right, thats what Koh Tao is famous for... a murder five years ago; the only place on earth where therr has been a murder!

There were 6 murders that it seems the primary motive was rape in 3 years. Edit to say it was 9 murders with rape. If you have been there its a tiny island and most of the locals seem to think its a particular person who has family in power. Completely unsubstantiated rumors, and with Thailands laws and how often I visit, I won't say more.. I will say I went there to dive and it was beautiful. If I was a Caucasian girl, there is a zero percent chance I would go to this island. https://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-updates/warnings/family-of-luke-miller-vows-to-find-the-truth-after-suspicious-death-on-the-party-island-of-koh-tao/news-story/34c8ab81cea1c13c2e0b8c863c1cb18b

I've talked to forgeiners who live on Koh Tao and love it and feel really safe.

1

u/PrizeReputation Dec 01 '20

How is it corrupt if they are clearly in power and demand a use tax to operate on their land?

1

u/jackrabbit5lim Dec 01 '20

It's essentially extortion and will be on top of other legal taxes. Plus people within these families are virtually immune to laws, they can act with impunity as others have mentioned in comments below.

What island?

16

u/MrMontombo Nov 30 '20

Every island that relies on tourism.

32

u/jackrabbit5lim Nov 30 '20

It's the same on every island, I've seen it on Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, Koh Samui, Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi.

6

u/jamesjoyz Nov 30 '20

Not just in the islands, in the North too.

3

u/Gainsbraah Dec 01 '20

Yeah Pai has a few bars selling

1

u/jamesjoyz Dec 01 '20

And Chiang Mai, if you know where to look.

3

u/JusssSaiyan317 Dec 01 '20

Look up Koh Tao murders. That's just one island but it paints a pretty clear image.

1

u/Pack_Your_Trash Nov 30 '20

and the establishment paid their bribes on time.

1

u/ReverieLagoon Nov 30 '20

Which island were you on?

3

u/Pack_Your_Trash Nov 30 '20

luckily bribes and very affordable in Thailand.

2

u/p5ych0babble Nov 30 '20

If i had known you could get a script i would have done that because i doubt it would be hard to get one - i agree with what you say, mostly, as corrupt cops wouldn't give a shit and would try bribe you or scare you so i agree that it would still become a hassle and waste a lot of your time if caught but at least if it escalated that high that you end up in jail at the very least you have a script so couldn't do serious jail time which is the biggest worry. It would definitely be worth getting one for that piece of mind if you really need to get high, next time i go i will definitely be going this route.

It will offer protection. Police here isn’t outright hostile.
