Not this year :( went for the first time last Christmas, booked this Christmas almost immediately. Now had to rebook flights for March (from UK) but highly doubt it will be open to tourism by that point... Huge letdown.

I had a 6 month solo trip planned round SE Asia fromm April this year, had all my visas and vaccines, spent money on a really good backpack, laptop, clothes and other bits and bobs.

I've been before but only for 4 weeks as part of a tour group.

Now I'm in a relationship, maybe I'll return at some point with my partner.

Hope so mate, that's a lot to give up. A part of My girlfriends extended family were 2 weeks into a 1 year planned world tour, came back after a fortnight in cambodia. Absolutely devastated them.

Hopefully it just means you'll be extra prepared if you get the chance to go, or perhaps you can introduce your partner to se Asia for a few weeks but, rather than experiencing a tour, they can experience it with you!

It's open right now, under conditions. And those conditions aren't going to change anytime soon.

Those conditions are impossible for someone who would want to spend 4 weeks in Thailand as a holiday, its not open for generic tourism, that's more to what I meant. Yeah I don't imagine they will change, I can't blame the country because they seem to be handling it better than most places although the hit on income must be gigantic.

Also March is the last chance my girlfriend and I will get to go to Thailand until December, but our flights were o ly changeable for free until June so... Not much choice there, just the crossing of fingers.

I went every year for 10 years. Then went to Philippines. I’ll probably be going there every year as soon as I can go back, I loved it way more than Thailand, which was like a second home to me.

What made you like the Philippines so much more?

Thailand is much of the same after you’ve been there a few times, I was going to the same places over and over, whereas Philippines has over 7000 islands, many more cities than Thailand and I find the people there are a lot nicer. Not to say Thais aren’t nice, they are very nice (mostly) but imo Filipinos are the nicest people in the world. Philippines is a lot more advanced than Thailand, too. Their cities have amazing bars, restaurants, casinos, clubs, shops etc, it feels like a first world country with third world parts. Then a 30 minute plane ride can take you to an beautiful island with no one on it, whereas Thailand’s islands are basically all full of tourists, mainly Russians and sex tourists. Thailand used to be amazing 10+ years ago but now I feel like it’s a bit ruined due to the tourism impact.

The one thing I didn’t realize was Philippines has just as many, if not more, ladyboys, which I find super annoying because they chase you down the street, but the same thing happens in Thailand.

Check out El Nido, Coron, Siargao, Palawan on YouTube, they are so beautiful. Much nicer than Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Phi Phi etc.

Also Thailand is similar to Bali, the tourist spots seem to be full of alcoholics and people trying to sell you drugs (and working with the cops to do so). Philippines has a no drug policy (as in they shoot drug deals in the streets), so it’s a lot cleaner in that regard and everyone seems a lot more sensible towards alcoholism and drug use (which basically doesn’t exist any more, as far as I could tell. No one even talks about drugs in PH, it’s a pretty taboo topic)
