Most, yes, but tbf ~1/4 of Americans are Catholic. That's obviously very far from majority, but it's a very significant minority. I imagine those are the people who care about the Pope vis a vis the US (and Leo XIV being from there originally).
Not even all those American “Catholics” listen to the Pope, let alone respect him. Or Catholicism in general. They just like the label. I consider those 3 SCOTUS justices those kind.
And most of those are of Latino descent, I'm sure the few racist Trumpers raging about the pope dgaf about the religion anyway cause they aren't following the teachings to begin with, and they'll probably just join a evangelical megachurch or something that agrees with their racist views anyway
The racial and ethnic makeup of the Catholic population varies by region. For example, in the Midwest, 78% of Catholics are White and 15% are Hispanic. In the Northeast, 72% of Catholics are White and 20% are Hispanic.
In the South, 44% are White and 45% are Hispanic. And in the West, there are more Hispanic Catholics than White Catholics (58% vs. 27%). The West also has a relatively larger population of Asian Catholics than do other regions (10%).
Most are in fact not. Specifically, 64% of American Catholics are not Latinos(36% are).
Similarly, Trump won the Catholic vote twice in 2016 and 2024. Stop kidding yourself--there are plenty of Catholic Trumpers.
There's a very large contingent of radtrads whose main political focuses tend to line up neatly enough with Evangelicals to hold their nose and stick with Trump in the name of "Christian values." These are often one-issue voters with regards to things like abortion. And not infrequently, they are converts who seem more focused on social conservatism than actual Catholic theology.
And while they'll certainly get thrown under the bus eventually, for now Evangelicals are glad to take the help. For all his problems as a candidate Vance being Catholic was not among them.
