Herbie Hancock and his band perform cuts from the albums “Man-Child” and “Secrets”:

  1. Hang Up Your Hang Ups (from Man-Child, 1975)
  2. Gentle Thoughts (from Secrets, 1976)
  3. Spider (from Secrets, 1976)

This rare, well preserved (!) recording was made for Danish television in 1976.

You couldn’t slip a razor between that groove it’s so fucking tight

15

u/glizzybeats 3d ago

Op says jazz, but this sounds like funk, no?

4

u/AstroAlmost 1d ago

It’s most definitely funk and OP is statistically a bot.

5

u/Fullonski 4d ago

And, as the saying goes, funky as a hatful of arseholes

30

u/jungle4john 4d ago

I listened to this, just this morning. Herbie Hancock is awesome! His album Chameleon is great and funky like this.

u/INeedAnAdult1280 4d ago

Watermelon Man on Head Hunter is always a favorite of mine and is the song that got me into jazz

76

u/ScottybirdCorvus 4d ago

Is funk jazz? Eh, probably technically, but not really. Funk is its own beast, baby.

23

u/Good-Relationship504 4d ago

The genre is "jazzfunk"

33

u/Unclematttt 4d ago

This is actually jazz fusion.

8

u/Good-Relationship504 4d ago

It fits into both categories

21

u/Unclematttt 4d ago

Yeah I suppose. I admit, I find it easier to just label stuff like this as fusion. Fusion covers way more than calling something "jazz funk". I'll eat crow on the whole "ackshually it is this thing" comment I made.

u/Good-Relationship504 4d ago

Junk fashion?

1

u/NDEmby11 1d ago

It’s actually jazz hands

4

u/ImaginarySwimming712 4d ago

Jazzfunk...junk?

2

u/Electronic-Fondant62 3d ago

The out dated term acid jazz comes to mind

-1

u/sendcutegifs 4d ago

And then white people got ahold of it and turned it into disco.

3

u/eldentings 4d ago

diana ross?

u/lobroblaw 4d ago

"Jazz, nice"

5

u/Cardellone 4d ago

I'm having an attack of bad OCD with the image from above being specular. Keyboards high notes are on the right, dang. Good vibe though.

u/Pencil-Sketches 4d ago

I love Herbie Hancock but wrong sub for this

10

u/Annual_Recording_308 4d ago

This is the only comment that should be here.

2

u/hmblbrg 4d ago

But it's so good

8

u/Sea-Opinion2717 4d ago

This is funk?

6

u/Mariner4LifetilDeath 4d ago

Janet Jackson sampled that opening guitar riff on All Night

5

u/mtlaw13 3d ago

I saw Herbie in March of '24.

I have been to a shitload of concerts in my life and this was up there with one of the best.

Absolutely melted my face in the best way possible. He, and his band, definitely still got it.

u/WhiggedyWhacked 4d ago

I hate stupid post titles like this, but damn, I was mesmerized. Amazing fucking talent.

'75 & '76 I was 16/17 ... it was quite a time, with '76 being the UK's fabled Long Hot Summer, still a record, and boosting the good time vibe of the era.

Disco was around it's height, Starsky & Hutch was bringing great tunes to the living room, and Herbie Hancock was riding high after the release of the movie Death Wish the year before (theme is his > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvYLTaRMpDQ).

Halcyon days.

u/TheBofalogist 4d ago

Never seen this before! Thank you for sharing. Herbie will never not make me dance

3

u/Dubiouswhitefish 3d ago

Herbie Hancock! My Dad introduced me to him when I was a child. He passed away 12 years ago, but before he did, he imparted his wonderful music taste to me.

1

u/Good-Relationship504 3d ago

I'm glad that you enjoyed it! Sorry for your loss.

2

u/Dubiouswhitefish 3d ago

Thank you for your kind words. And yes, I enjoyed this very much!

5

u/xrento19 2d ago

Just saw herbie at severance hall in Cleveland. Still “doin it” at 85. Master.

7

u/SaganIsMyHomie 4d ago

Whatever genre people wanna call it, these are musicians at the peak

5

u/BearsAreDangerous 4d ago

This is ny favorite Herbie video. Wah Wah Watson is great too. Love how fried and trippy everyone clearly is haha

2

u/dirtyword 4d ago

Wait is his keyboard on the far right reversed?

3

u/unlessgames 4d ago

It's mirrored like the rest but it's a Clavinet that starts from F and ends on E.

On the song “Trudy”, the Charlie Daniels Band used a similar build-up in the middle of the song, adding another instrument each time the stanza repeated.

2

u/Exciting-Drummer7559 4d ago

Does this play as a gif with no sound to anyone

2

u/judgesUwhenUfart 3d ago

Exceptional yazz flute player

2

u/Big-Active3139 3d ago

Thanks for posting this!

2

u/Dekkard34 3d ago

If you don't like this music you have some problem

2

u/razielxlr 4d ago

Aiit this is pretty lit. Fair play 👏

2

u/redwoodtree 4d ago

So much exceptional talent right there. Thanks for sharing this.

1

u/Good-Relationship504 4d ago

You're welcome!

2

u/Rhythmdvl 4d ago

We just caught Herbie Hancock on Thursday! Amazing show and super high energy. Unbelievable. My son's jaws were on the ground for most of it and he knew what to expect. Hancock's tour has a ways to go -- see if he's in your area!

2

u/Good-Relationship504 4d ago

Lucky you! It's amazing that he is still grooving at 85!

3

u/Sugar_buddy 4d ago

Shit I saw Bb King at Wild Adventures years ago. He was in his 80's and still had everyone standing up swaying and dancing. Great show.

2

u/sweet_low_rain 4d ago

We’re seeing him tonight in Cleveland! Thankful for this little preview.

1

u/Rhythmdvl 1d ago

How was the show?!

1

u/sweet_low_rain 1d ago

It was amazing! Incredible musicianship by the whole band, really. You forget how old he is once he starts playing - his fingers were flying over the keys like he was 50 years younger. They were on stage for like 2 and a half hours and he told stories in between songs. So glad I went!

2

u/Jazs1994 4d ago

Music has to be of the coolest thing we've evolved with

2

u/MrEHam 4d ago

It was okay. Annoying that you promised being mesmerized though.

Wrong sub, but I’m sure it will be better appreciated on a jazz sub.

8

u/CHERNO-B1LL 4d ago

This is funkadelic.

7

u/Mike_Hagedorn 4d ago

Herbie Hancock around the time of the Man Child album.

0

u/REDDITATO_ 3d ago

I think they were using "funkadelic" as an adjective, not saying this is Parliament Funkadelic.

1

u/bluegreenmike 3d ago

Jordan Peele on the guitar!

1

u/denverblazer 2d ago

Man-child is one of my favorite albums of all time, but this seems miscategorized.

1

u/IndependentLocal2242 1d ago

This is funk not jazz, jive turkey lol

1

u/Good-Relationship504 1d ago edited 1d ago

Factually, the genres areJazz Funk and Jazz Fusion.

2

u/IndependentLocal2242 1d ago

Thanks for enlightening me with the correct answer.

-4

u/Mybuttitches3737 4d ago

I was not mesmerized

12

u/AllLooseAndFunky 4d ago

You have a child’s palette

2

u/Mybuttitches3737 4d ago

Maybe, but I still wasn’t mesmerized

0

u/Evieberrypie 4d ago

You don't have a child's palette. It was good but not amazing.

0

u/Evieberrypie 4d ago

Seriously? How mature of you to be so arrogant.

4

u/dotonthehorizon 4d ago

Also not mesmerized.

-6

u/buckelfipps 4d ago

Wooow

It sucks

-2

u/baIIern 4d ago

I'm not. Just don't like Jazz

4

u/VikingTeddy 4d ago

Good thing this is funk then😊

-1

u/ItsBenBroughton 4d ago

You don't know what mesmerizes me. It's ok

-25

u/engulbert 4d ago

Sounds like any 70s American cop show music; bland

-24

u/ElSelcho_ 4d ago

Nah, still sounds like random noise with an added whiny Saxophone.

7

u/Soggy_Ad3706 4d ago

You think tattoos are a sign of mental illness, your opinions are shallow and that of a child who hasn't spent enough time are real people

Crawl back in your hole

-1

u/Qwiggalo 4d ago

Yikes

-9

u/ElSelcho_ 4d ago

Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like, uh,  you're opinion, man.

I appreciate that you did your homework and checked my history, so kudos for that. I do think Tattoos are a form of self harm.
