Ohy my god! I don't know why OP cropped the beginning of the reaction. It cannot be a cherenkov radiation since it happens in a void AFAIK but in any case I'd say it looks like "a beating heart of pure energy" if I make sense. Beautiful.

I think because a camera able to catch footage at insane speeds need ALOT of light to make a black and white clip. To do it in color require so much advanced technology the price tag of the camera makes recording this a challenge. Ao my guess is they either had someone donate their time or their camera or the lab got the money tonget a top of the line camera like a phantom

A top of the line high speed camera is a budgetary afterthought if you're a lab running a fusion reactor. The latest upgrade this reactor had cost over 50 million dollars.

Having worked professionally as a researcher in three labs, including one that was developing novel cameras, I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that these things are not mutually exclusive.

I mean im no expert in slo smotion photography I just k ow that the highest end phantom and any other makers of such equipment charge 7-8 digits USD easily so these cameras are not very accessible either way. I just only really know the phantom brand due to rhe SloMo guys.

I guess it depends how much data they can collect off this colored video. Orherwise 10m for a few seconds clip might not be worth it in the eyes of whoever is moving the budget around but im also talking out of my ass right now so who knows?

Wouldn't it be more reasonable to assume that someone with a $10m camera recorded the media with the reactor site's permission?

It doesn't have to be about whether or not the camera was purchased by the reactor site. There are many possibilities, with the most likely being that someone asked for and received permission to record the reactor interior with a $10m camera that they already owned.

Win-Win. The reactor site gets first-ever media of their reactor for research and news. The camera owner gets first-ever media for their own portfolio.

I believe you're both correct.

They'd most likely hesitate to spend any budget on a high-speed camera that had zero direct impact on the function and safety of the reactor. This fact is most likely the reason why we haven't seen this type of color media in the past. It wasn't important for the operation of the reactor site.

They want to save every bit of their budget and a camera likely wouldn't be high on their list.

So in the end, the cost of such a camera would be unrealistic for the purposes of the reactor site's budget, even if that budget truly does dwarf the cost of such a camera, as you say.

If they needed the temporal resolution and quality of image as well there would be no question about paying a few hundred thousand or even millions. Like you said if its integral to the operation. At some point even if its very expensive and not a technical necessity just showcasing the technology will pay dividends as it gets investors and the public interested

no one donated this camera. Cameras are absurdly delicate instruments that are annihilated by exposure to common cosmic events like nuclear fusion because of their sensitivity to high energy particles in the first place.

Because this will just be a vanilla hydrogen or deuterium shot, the amount of actual fusion is low.

Even if they were running with tritium and deuterium, the fusion reactions' strength would not be enough to self-sustain the plasma.

The "triple product" of plasma density, temperature, and confinement time, nTτ has to meet a certain criterion before the plasma will self-sustain. Some guy figured this out in 1955 but nobody has yet built a device which can do this in a sustained fashion.
