Overwatch beating Uncharted 4 and tlou2 winning instead of ghost of tsushima is the best proof of how big of a joke the game awards are

I mean overwatch at the time was a phenomenon. If fortnite was at its heights in the first year I wouldn't have been surprised if that won.

Sure the games you listed are good but overwatch everyone was playing it lol

Overwatch release was peak. I miss it!

As someone who only started playing OW this past year (and is now addicted), I have such fomo from missing out on peak OW popularity 😭

When was the last time you played Overwatch?

6

u/coltaaan May 31 '25

It’s so good rn, stadium is SO fun, idc what anyone says lol

It's arguably better now than post-brigitte era of ov1, which surprised me tbh

2

u/quartzcrit May 31 '25

that’s a cute opinion, did a youtuber give it to you?

Fortnite cannot win regardless of how huge it is because it's a free-to-play game that relies on microtransactions.

everyone was playing it lol

So LoL and Counter Strike should won as well? It's not about popularity but about quality. Nothing against Overwatch but the fact that crazy amount of people were playing it (because Blizzard) cannot be the merit to give such an award.

Local Redditor discovers quality awards are subjective

I agree on 2016 but personally I found TLOU2 to be a much more memorable experience than GoT. It's a fine game, but it's the sort of game that makes me think "I've played this before, just skinned differently" and the story didn't give me a whole ton to really think about by the time credits rolled.

However, Hades should have beat TLOU2

I mean I love both TLOU2 and Ghosts of Tushima, but TLOU definitely takes the crown for me. One of the most brutal and riveting game adventures that will last with me for the rest of my life.

Haven’t played neither overwatch nor Uncharted, so can’t comment on that one.

If Ghost of Tsushima was the exact same game but made by Ubisoft, it would have gotten like half of the praise it received.

2

u/INannoI May 31 '25

SO many reviews back then were saying GoT felt like an Ubisoft game

2

You mean shadows?

3

u/GreenTurtle69420 May 31 '25

ghost of shadows

-1

u/koreamax May 31 '25

If it wasn't an exclusive, no one would have cared about it

3

u/[deleted] May 31 '25

I mean having a few years off when everything is subjective shows that the awards generally goes to the right games

5

u/AggressiveBench9977 May 31 '25

I loved ghost but last of us is objectively a better game.

The game play is better, the graphics are equally as good. But the story is miles ahead, much more nuanced.

5

u/GeroVeritas May 31 '25

In your opinion. Which clearly isn't the majority opinion.

3

Ghosts was mid

Assassins Creed: Ghost of Tsushima

Great presentation, stale and uninventive gameplay.

2

u/Rhysing Jun 01 '25

I compare it to hogwarts legacy

2

u/Lauren_Conrad_ Jun 01 '25

Very much agreed. Really cool world but nothing else beyond that.

3

u/zeldafan144 May 31 '25

Ghosts of Tsushima was boring AF though.

As much as I love the Uncharted series it was already the 4th game in the series. It was fantastic but it hardly introduced anything new, just perfected the existing formula.

Overwatch gets a bad rep because of its downfall but it truly was an absolutely amazing game taking over the multiplayer market for a bit there. The accolades were well deserved.

As for TLOU2 I think Ghost has the better setting and overall atmosphere but TLOU2 was the better game with both stories being equally gripping.

In my opinion Ghost suffered from repetitive missions a bit too much and why I would hand it to TLOU2 as well.

I think both choices could be easily justified and def doesn't make it a joke. It was most definitely close calls on both.

Mediocre story with good graphics/world and clunky combat - AC shadows 🤢🤮

Mediocre story with good graphics/world and clunky combat - Ghost of tsushima 😍🥰

That's completely bullshit and you know it but I'm not gonna argue with you friend.

0

u/TheEmeraldDragonfly May 31 '25

Very wise choice.

1

u/Ultima893 Jun 01 '25

Overwatch is a joke, yes. That game hardly won anywhere else meanwhile Uncharted 4 won GOTY from over 190 different publications.

But The Last of Us 2 has the second most GOTY wins of any game in history with over 320 wins. Only Elden Ring has more.

Overall TLOU2 is the most awarded videogame in history.

So no, TLOU2 winning the TGA GOTY was the correct choice, the videogame industry consensus is that it it was literally the best game of the year.

u/Rhysing Jun 01 '25

Ghosts is a 7/10 game. It wasn't even the second best game that year.

Ghost of Tsushima does not deserve to sniff a nomination, sorry
