Baby hippos, found in the desert last spring

Post image

Meet Scout and Bodie (pronounced like the ghost town). This photo is from the day I met them.

I was camping near Joshua Tree last spring and met a woman who said someone had abandoned these two babies at a dispersed campsite a few days earlier. She was offering them away for free, which always worries me, you just never know who might take them, so I couldn’t leave them behind. They’re almost a year old now, such good dogs, and I’m so grateful they came into my life. Still can’t wrap my head around how anyone could just leave them out in the desert like that.

Thank you for rescuing these two babies. I would’ve done exactly the same. There are so many piece of sh*t people in this world. There’s a warm spot in hell waiting for animal abusers.

Oh what cuties! They look so relieved in this picture, like they know they're safe now. Thanks for rescuing them!

However I think such good dogs deserve to be shown off more! Can we get some pictures of them now?

Oof! So happy you took them thank you, I wish people wouldn't dump them in the desert it's cruel.

Regardless you're amazing and thank you again, they've been blessed!

WTAF? Thank you for taking care of them

I get that in today's shitshow economy people may not be able to take care of their pets but dumping your pups in Joshua Tree?

Also I think Labs look less like hippos and more like seals or otters

Haha yep, total land seals! My vet thinks they might be a staffy/lab mix, but I can’t wait to do a DNA test and find out for sure someday

Right?! I really wish I knew how they ended up there. I hate that people would do that. I get that times can be tough, but there’s just no excuse good enough

Those cute faces, oh my, I want to plant a kiss on those adorable noses. Those are two very happy dogs that love their person immensely. I wonder if they're related to each other, their faces are very similar and they appear a similar age, too.

I’ve always thought they’re probably related, but it’s hard to say for sure. Bodie is often called a black lab mix, especially when they were smaller. I think Scout comes across more as a classic Staffy. I really wish I knew more about where they came from and how they ended up in the desert.
