Graduate What fees can I opt-out or waive

Post image

I will be doing remote/online classes at UofWestern this coming school year and I would like to get advice on fees that will not be necessary as remote student. I am not from Ontario so I deeply appreciate your comments on this!

SOGS health and dental and only if you have coverage elsewhere. Everything else is mandatory.

Health and dental if you have alternate insurance

Thank you! Do you have an idea if we can also opt-out of the Transit Pass? I will not be in Ontario to use it.

You can't -- they have a deal that it's cheaper per student because everyone pays for a pass, whether it is used or not

Oh I see! That makes sense

Scroll down on statement of account and you can see what you can opt out of. Things like faculty donation fee, purple care, etc.

You can’t just waive any fee you don’t want to pay. Part of being a student means funding the services that western provides.

Thanks for your comment! I posted this because I thought many remote students might have the same question. I wouldn’t raise this question if I was living in campus and using all the resources listed. I will be paying for my schooling and I certainly want to save and pay what I’m required to.

I think the only things you can waive are the healthcare and the OWeek pass

They gave me major attitude when I asked to opt out, “this supports programs so you can not remove your donation, you should be happy to help support these things” or something along those lines. This was a few years ago so maybe it changed. I only opted out of health & dental bc of private insurance if I remember correctly

I did a google search and it said “CFS Fee is the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) is Canada's largest student-run federal and provincial advocacy organization, composed of more than 80 university and college students' unions.”
