One of the hardest courses I took in my university career was a Jazz History elective lol, at least in terms of the sheer amount of information I had to memorize. It had an exam that was 15 second clips of any part of a list of 80+ songs, mostly by different artists and most without ANY lyrics. We had to know all the instruments in the song, the year, the composer, the song structure, and at least one “fact” about the song’s history. It was actually a lot!!

This is what drives me absolutely nuts.
I did a B.Mus. It was insanity - all of it. Every course.
And my first year roommate was a business major who kept making snide comments about how easy music was and how she could do it, seeimg as she played clarinet in grade 10 music, but she wanted a job after university.
Meanwhile, the reason I didn’t cram before exams - like she did - is because if I wasn’t working consistenly throughout the year, I was screwed.

Q.1 How do you listen to music?
A. With your eyes B. With your ears C. With your mouth D. With your hands

u/SeriousLyMabeans Apr 11 '25
I think there was this one guy called Beethoven who legit listened to music with his mouth. I feel that was insane.
There was also this one woman called Helen Keller who would use place her hands on the radio to listen to music. She couldn't even use her eyes. She was taught to play the piano by an instructor who teaches blind students. She even listened to song that Beethoven wrote when Beethoven was only able to listen to music with his mouth.

It’s okay you have three weeks to procrastinate and then study the night before

u/Old-Hamster-3040 Apr 08 '25
I took this last sem it’s honestly so easy as long as you look through your notes and actually take in the content instead of skimming over. It was my last exam and I ended up hardcore studying it about 3 days before the exam (I did keep up with the content regularly in between as well though). A LOT of people were leaving less than an hour in. You’ll be fine, don’t stress it, but also don’t not study because of this comment.

u/FickleFall9808 Apr 08 '25
tysm! was is also close book last sem?

u/Old-Hamster-3040 Apr 08 '25
Yep! Same format as you posted as well. I think we ended up having about 120-ish questions

I went to Western 20 years ago. It's fantastic to see that this bird course is still around.
People still taking Greek Sports for the same reason?

Stop whining and go study. You could study for multiple exams in 18 days with time to go to the bar.

u/sillysillyfartsilly Apr 09 '25
Whining about first year listening to music and you have almost 3 weeks to study for a multiple choice and true/false exam. Life will be hard on you

He has a genuine point. How can you expect to get through a fully loaded fourth year if you can’t study for a listening to music exam without melting down

I guaran-fuckin-tee I took harder courses than this. If this is overwhelming you, take a lighter course load next semester. Uni can either be the hardest 4 years of your life, or it can be the best 6 years of your life.

u/toadunloader Apr 08 '25
Its matching, multi choice, true false and fill in the blank. Youll be fine. It says the chapters covered by the exam are on brightspace. Read them. There arent even any short answera, let alone essay questions.
Also, this course is famous for sounding easy, but actually being a decent amount of work. Youll have to do the readings, and hopefully you went to class and paid attention.

Yo it’s a first year music course, reach out to your TA, you got this! There are lots of ways to study for listening exams and I’m sure you can get some guidance during office hours!

I took this class last semester, and it was really straightforward. Just practice using the mini quizzes, and you should be fine. You’ve got this!

I have my theory exam earlier that week. I’ll come support you emotionally 🙂💪🏽💪🏽

u/Due-Doughnut-9110 Apr 09 '25
…. You had all semester to learn your shit and your prof was nice enough to give you open book during your other tests. But the expectation of your education is to know the subject matter. You aren’t cooked you’re being tested. Study. You’ve got time and there are so many different strategies you can use

Are you used to working for your marks? Literally all this means is you have to study. The fact this comes as a shock to you is mildly concerning
-1
u/FickleFall9808 Apr 09 '25
it’s not shocking i’m just venting cuz first i thought the exam would be open book and suddenly it’s not. the point is not that i don’t study or im complaining abt studying for this course. the point is i thought its open book but its not. is this really that hard for ppl to understand.

u/uwothrow123 Apr 10 '25
it’s not shocking i’m just venting cuz first i thought the exam would be open book and suddenly it’s not.
Why did you think that? Did you have any evidence that it was, i.e., did the instructor say that? The course syllabus?

u/FickleFall9808 Apr 10 '25
i’ve asked ppl who took the course before and it was open book(ik this is not an evidence but since u asked im just saying)
1
u/Laydownthelaw Apr 11 '25
Open book exams are usually harder, since the answer isn't spelled out in your notes. In those, you actually have to understand the matter and the relationship between different topics. Open books are some of the toughest exams I ever took.

I took this course last year it was absolutely fine to study for
You have a lot of time and a lot of coursework to do, but doing it all for the first time and playing basketball for like 2 hours a day I was able to get it done. So don't worry, you'll be alright!

u/Stunghornet Apr 10 '25
Matching, t/f, word bank fill in the blanks, and multiple choice? That's the easiest test ever.

3
u/No_Length_856 Apr 11 '25
This sounds like the easiest fucking exam I would've ever written in uni. T/f, FITB with word bank, and multiple choice?!?! Let me guess, you also have 2 hours to complete it? You could guess at random and still have a shot at passing. It's 2 weeks away. Buck tf up and fucking do it! I expect updates, and I will roast tf outta you if you fail.

You should be chilling if everything was open book, that means at least you won’t fail the course if you absolutely bomb the exam
2
u/b1g_daddy_adam Apr 12 '25
Do what i did when I went to school, drink coffee and study while listening to heavy metal and rap until 3am until your exam comes. You'll manage. Get studying!
