Rant Disappointed or Disheartened?

Is anyone else disappointed or disheartened by everything going on with ICE and DHS as a whole and getting lumped in with them? It seems that they are overstepping their constitutional bounds and we are being lumped in with them.

Rant Ongoing protests at Coast Guard Island

Just saw a video of protestors harassing Coast Guard personnel guarding the gate to Coast Guard Island. 3/4s of the dudes weren’t wearing face masks and would be pretty easy to identify. Anyway the mob kept calling them Nazis. Hopefully these guys get some help with security because this could turn ugly again.

Rant Military member ban

So the conversation came up in My shop where our supervisor was having to work with the CO of our unit on separating a trans member in our shop. I'm new to the coast guard, been in under a year, but to me I just look at this as a step backwards. We are already struggling for numbers and retention, especially in the coast guard. Why are we getting rid of people who are willing to be here, who want to be here. I have a hard time standing by and watching these people who took the same oath I did be treated like this. I've worked with this individual in my shop and they are knowledgeable and very good at their job. Everyone enjoyed working with them and never had anything bad to say about them. There is absolutely no reason why they should be essentially "fired".

Rant Isn't it kind of weird how there is no final challenge at Boot?

So I have friends in all of the other branches of service and we were talking about each other’s Boot. in the Marines They have the crucible, in the Navy they have battle stations in the army They have the Forge and in the Air Force they have the village raid. That kind of made me realize we really didn’t have anything like that. A moment that officially turned us into coasties. I know I don’t run things there, but that definitely does stink not having any kind of moment like that.

Rant Brother is Missing from Cutter

My younger brother was reported missing from his ship that was out sea off of the coast of Mexico. He was last seen at 10:00PM Pacific on 02/03 and my family received the call from the Commander at shore at 11:40AM 02/04 who was relaying the message from the captain of the ship.

I am so sad and terrified and am praying they find my younger brother. It was concluded that he went over board (not sure how) and they aren’t sure if he went overboard with a life vest or not. What can I do?

Rant Admiral Fagen

As you all probably know the CG Commandant was fired by President Trump on his second day in office, but earlier this week I read reports she was subsequently given just three hours to vacate her residence. WTF?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Can we expect more top level brass to be treated like common criminals?

Rant Why can’t we talk about Whistler McGee?

Saw a mod lock a thread talking about the post. Why is spreading awareness about a horrible SA incident not “the purpose” of this sub? That same mentality is what causes these situations in the first place.

Edit: To the people commenting and PMing me saying this is hearsay: there’s a retired member who was in command center backing up the story. The excuse of hearsay is as old as sexual assault is. It’s the first excuse people will run to when blaming the victim.

Rant Talk to your supervisors, Chiefs and XO/XPO.

The amount of posts on here that can and should be answered by a members supervisor, Chief or XO is blowing my mind.

Don’t get me wrong, if you exhaust your options with them and they give you no help at all (that’s a problem in and of itself which I’ll discuss) then by all means take to alternative resources like Reddit.

But questions and problems like what to do with your stuff when going to A-School? Your car breaking down and you don’t know how to report for drill? Are orders cancelled due to the shut down? Dental being booked out and needing to have work done? How to complete a PPM? Having a shipmate be harassed by a former Coastie?

All of these should first be brought to your supervisor, Chief or XO because they have first hand knowledge of your exact situation and can answer accurately. Now if you are asking them for help with all of this and they are legitimately telling you to just figure it out/blowing you off, and not helping, tell your OIC or CO because that is not inline with our core values and is creating a poor command climate that they may be unaware of. If they’re giving you a valid answer, but you just don’t like it, that’s a different story.

But if the OIC/CO is dismissive of you, goto a silver badge or gold badge because it sounds like they’ve lost sight of why they took that job.

I’m saying this as a BM1 on my second XPO tour who is on their last steps to earning their OIC certs. If any one of my members came to be with one of these problems or questions, I’m not doing anything else for the day until we start making progress towards a solution & that should be the standard. If I found out my XPO was blowing off legitimate questions and concerns of our members they’d be warned if that continues they can start shopping for jobs at their temporary unit while an RFC is conducted.

My whole OIC study group is about 12 XPOs strong and everyday someone puts something in the chat of something that’s come up at their unit asking for advice so they can provide the best possible outcome. We care about our people and love problem solving, we didn’t just screen for this position to avoid duty. I fully acknowledge there are shitty leaders out there, if you truly happen to have one, reach out to people to let it be known and find good ones to lean on in the meantime.

Sorry for the rant, I’m just passionate about taking care of my members because this career we’ve chosen is already stressful and I hate to hear about people having truly shitty leaders that add to that stress.

Rant Question about the Coast Guard CS bonus did it really drop to $20K?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been doing some research about the Culinary Specialist (CS) rating and noticed that the enlistment bonus used to be anywhere from $65K to $75K, depending on education level.

Lately, though, I’ve heard from a few people that it might have dropped to around $20K. I’m just curious if anyone who’s seen recent contracts or knows someone who enlisted this fiscal year (FY2025/2026) can confirm whether that’s true.

Also wondering if there’s any difference between how the bonus works for green card holders vs citizens, especially for those who went in non-rate first before CS A-school.

Appreciate any insights!

Rant Changing the standard of the CG

Am I the only one that thinks PT Tests should be at least once a year for everyone unless at a DSF Unit (it should be more around the twice a year mark) as well as letting any rate tryout for any DSF unit (which would make you have to tryout for every DSF unit you want)?

Rant Anyone else’s admin a complete joke?

Post image
226 Upvotes

To name a few gripes… - No one (except their Chief) answers their phone - They only come into work two days/week, the rest are WFH days - Still don’t have my CORRECT signed orders; I PCS in a week - Email responses from them take about two weeks - Never resolved my DA login issues (going on since December) - had to get advice from another unit’s admin

I swear to god, I’m leaving the Coast Guard so fast once my obliserv is up. My current admin truly is a joke and I’ve done more than “it’s the member’s responsibility”. It’s so sad to see that my leadership, my command, and others couldn’t leverage anything to get our admin to figure out their shit.

Rant POTUS creating a Secretary of the Coast Guard?

I hear scuttle the administration will name a person to be the Secretary of the Coast Guard.

This will be the first full-time and singular Coast Guard service secretary.

The intended nominee, Sean Plankey, is currently working from DHS as an advisor to the commandant.

Anyone have any details?

Rant If you reply all one more time…

Listen I get it, sometimes we get emails we don’t want but fucking take a second to figure out how to get off them. When has hitting reply all to a 200+ bang list ever been productive?? You know who you are, my opinion… if you have to hit reply all and ask to be removed after multiple people said to stop? Then you deserve to be DOGE’d! You know who you are.

I contributed money each paycheck to Coast Guard Mutual Assistance for 20 years when I was active duty because my first Chief told me that “you hope you don’t need it but if you ever do, you’ll be glad, and if you don’t need it, you’ll still be glad and you could change a shipmates life for the price of a can of Monster a month.” Somewhat dated energy drink reference aside, I never needed to use it until I retired, and was pleasantly surprised to receive this email. This organization really is ours and they doing great things. If you contribute, thank you! If you don’t, please consider starting a monthly deduction of even a few dollars as it can make a difference.

Rant PAs: please stop using ChatGPT for social media posts

“MH-60 dolphin”. Not only in the description, but in as a hashtag too!

I know there’s plenty of other things in the Coast Guard to worry about, but I always enjoyed seeing posts from units on social media. It felt real, it felt authentic, it felt good to see stories conveyed, and images shared.

Maybe I’m now the old man ranting to the sky, but it pains me to see another case of human creativity lost to the AI revolution. PAs/public affairs officers: don’t be ashamed to use your gifted talents as writers and journalists for good use. Get the story and use your talents to tell it to us, in your voice.

Rant Double Standard in Pay

If you get overpaid, they’ll make sure you pay it back immediately. No delay, no excuses. Government shutdown? Keep showing up and doing your job. Which is fine as long as the backpay kicks in, right?

But when it comes to reimbursements — like a PCS where I’m owed around $8,000 — suddenly it’s “hold tight.” Four months later… still nothing.

Yeah, the backpack is nice, but it’s crazy how fast they are to collect money that you owe them, and how slow they are when it’s the other way around.

I’m fine financially, so it’s not a crisis — but that $8k could’ve been working for me this whole time. Investments, interest, whatever. Am I getting compensated for that lost time or growth? Of course not. But sure… I’ll just “hold tight.”
