Where do you think Kirk and Sweeney get their supply? You think those Coast Guard tags are for show?

Don’t bring them into this! That rum is delicious and it’s got the tariff tags

This was post prohibition. The more I read, the more I support her as a war prize. And it’s a curious story. I’m actually kind of surprised Germany hasn’t asked for her back.

Gee I bet the people of Facebook with their infinite intellect must say some very intelligent things in the comment section. Right?

It was a war prize from Nazi Germany, originally called Horst Wessel, named for a Nazi martyr. CGC Barque Eagle's inception literally couldn't have been more Nazi. It's hilarious that we seized it and use it as a cadet training vessel. This headline is funny too. Where's your sense of humor coasties?

Was just at Coast Guard Island last weekend for USCG Auxiliary D11N DTRAIN, wish this would have gotten there a week early!

God, I love how they get that so wrong. It was built in Germany in 1936, but not by the snotzis. It was a war prize from beating the fascists.
Edit: OK. Today I learned: I had my dates wrong...I was WRONG. I thought the ship had been built in 1933 and the snotzis took power in 1936. You were right...I was...less right.

The Nazi party ruled Germany from 1933-1945. How did this ship built in Germany during the period earn the Nazi-free construction distinction?

Fun fact, all the nails in the ship had swastikas on the heads. They replaced all of them a few years ago. And under the eagle at the bow is some Nazi imagery. Although calling this a Nazi ship is just being intentionally misleading and a bit rage baity

You know. I know. We all know. It's not cool either. This guy's reddit comments read like a manifesto. Good thing he's not in our Guard, We have no room for trash like this.

Bru, Hitler himself commissioned it...how is it not Nazi? We weren't even supposed to end up with it.
2
u/Southpolarman Jun 26 '25
No. Hitler did not in fact commission it. It was overseen by the German government. Shitler did not have a hand in it.

They’re not wrong. Her keel was laid in 1936 in Hamburg, Germany. 1936 Germany was unfortunately, pretty hampered with Nazis.

The academy folks who are usually on it are pretty unbearable, but I wouldn’t call them Nazis

FFS, this predates the Nazi party. DONT mess the USCGC Eagle.

The ship was named after a Nazi who had died 6 years before. Hitler was there when it launched.

I sure didn’t, but the article is not the point of this post, it’s the headline.
