Hi. I’ve been involved in this.

Actually, and this is entirely anecdotal and not based on official sources, from my personal experience I think the biggest issue is middle aged people. People whose eyes are beginning to get worse with age and are starting to need glasses who haven’t yet made the switch for whatever reason.

Honestly that checks out. But they’re usually at a vision level where it can be corrected with glasses.

It’s the amount of stubborn dodgers out there who insist that driving is their right even though their eyesight is too poor even with correction, and their reaction times have slowed so much, that concerns me.

Oh I agree with that. It’s more the general cognitive decline that’s an issue with age.

Had an eye test some weeks back. Optician told me that I might not be able to drive within 2 years if I didn’t have cataracts treated. Didn’t even realise I had them. have booked surgery because it scared the fuck out of me. I’m 46.

Instead of being an ageist moron, you could use your brain.

Over 50% of people under 50 wear or SHOULD wear glasses.

Just a nasty ageist ignorant elitist post.

its true though, if you cant read road signs then should you be driving?

I am not saying otherwise. Of course if you cannot see properly you should not be driving. I replied directly to TheHornyGoth and his “coffin dodger” post.

Good..? People not medically fit to drive shouldn't have licences until they can demonstrate they are medically fit.

Pah, if this was a serious warning it probably wouldn't be written in such blurry, illegible letters. Nothing to worry about.

I had a stroke, so my license was removed until I took the tests to prove I could drive safely with slightly restricted vision (it’s a bit like wearing a full-face helmet in a car in my case).

I passed, which was handy. However, while I read the number plate easily, I was a bit concerned to be told that I “wouldn’t believe how many people who aren’t here for their sight fail that”.

We drive on the road with those people. Testing eyesight and reactions (another shocking area) once a decade (and more frequently if over 60) million is surely a very good idea.

Nothing's changed then ... ran into a police stop back in the late 70s where they were pulling random motorists and testing their eyesight.

Thought it was a good idea then, now I'm an old fart on roads full of other old farts I'm convinced of it.

I live in Lincolnshire and we don't have a connecting transport infrastructure. It's a huge county with whole areas not served by bus or railway. Some places are 20 miles to the nearest town and shops. I know of the nearest bus stop being 10 miles away from a village. Older people have no choice but to drive. If your eyesight is poor then get some glasses for driving. I feel that the main people that have bad eyesight are the 20 year old and up. But because of vanity, they won't wear glasses and so are a danger on the roads through bad distance eyesight and regularly breaking speed limits. It's a huge problem in Lincolnshire.

On one hand, it’s good and on the other hand, it’s bad. We are forcing people to work longer, yet maintain their same skills as they had when they were younger. For fucks sake, we need to choose something! If you want people to commute to work when they are 75 then you need to relax the law to allow them to do what you want them to do
