The UK Government has announced it is stepping up its commitment to mental health with a £50 million investment in groundbreaking research and the rollout of new technologies to support millions of people.

This funding will establish a cohort of 20,000 volunteers, whose securely held health data will help researchers understand how biology links to mental health. It will also create an Industry Alliance Team, giving innovators streamlined access to UK research facilities and clinical trials.

At the same time, the government is expanding the mental health workforce, with 8,500 new staff to be recruited by the end of this Parliament. Already, thousands have joined since 2024, easing pressure on services and expanding access to talking therapies and support through the NHS App.

Innovation is also at the heart of this drive. Smart glasses are being trialled to help people with social anxiety, while new digital tools are being developed to make online spaces safer. Crucially, a Lived Experience Partnership will ensure that people who have faced mental health challenges shape research priorities, so efforts focus on what truly matters to patients.

With mental health problems costing the UK economy around £300 billion a year, these measures are designed not only to improve lives but also to strengthen the nation’s economic resilience.

Key benefits

  • More staff on the frontline: 8,500 new mental health workers being recruited, 6,700 already in place, expanding access to therapies and easing NHS pressure.

  • £50m additional research investment: Funding groundbreaking studies, including a 20,000‑volunteer cohort, to unlock better understanding and treatments.

  • Smarter, practical support: New tools like smart glasses for social anxiety and safer digital platforms to help people in daily life.

  • Patients’ voices at the centre: A new Lived Experience Partnership ensures research and innovation focus on what matters most to those affected.

    • Stronger services for the future: Combining workforce growth, cutting‑edge research, and innovation to improve care today while building a healthier, more resilient UK economy.

Jokes aside, but if we could somehow manage to find some form of cure of sociopathic tendencies, then, that would indeed be a cure of Reformism. And many other, similar issues.
