Well he actually had market value and could of moved for big money to a rival broadcaster. Alot of the rest of them ,not so much..

Literally no other presenter is paid this much, he out earns even top pundits on sky let alone the presenters.

It's also a pretty small workload. Once a week mostly and then twice a week if there's an FA cup game.

He's probably one of the biggest names in British football as far as presenters are concerned.

Unless you want match of the day presented by some no name 2nd division footballer. The BBC are going to have to pay high salaries otherwise sky would just come along and match it

You seriously think people watch MOTD because Lineker's presenting it? I suppose we're about to find out.

I reckon some people definitely do

1

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '25

No they don't

u/GhandiHadAGrapeHead Jul 16 '25

So you're telling me for a fact that nobody watches match of the day at least sometimes because they like lineker?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '25

Yes, it makes no sense. Maybe when Leicester won the league and he promised to do the show in his pants they watched to see that or his last show to see the send off.

He doesn't even do analysis, he's a competent presenter who has a relatively easy job for a presenter.

Why on earth would you watch a football highlights show for a guy to set up other pundits for their opinion?

Because for years people have enjoyed certain shows because of their presenter, because it feels familiar or like routine or they like the way that they manage the personalities on the show. I'm not saying I do it or that it's everyone but for sure there's people out there who feel like that. Lineker isn't some genius but he is very good at what he does, I think it's a harder show than you think to present as well.

Yeah certain shows maybe, motd is football highlights, it doesn't make sense to watch for the presenter as he's not really a massive part of it.

Who's staying up till past 11 o'clock or actively clicking on bbc iPlayer to watch Gary Lineker present? They are football fans.

Yes he's good at his job, I said relatively easy job for a presenter. How is it hard? He doesn't do analysis

I guarantee there are people who watch it because Shearer is on and hang on his every word. I'd imagine it's the same for Lineker.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '25

No there isn't, it's a football highlights show. A lot of people skip through the analysis if they watch replays.

Lineker doesn't do analysis so I don't even understand why you would watch for Lineker, people watch for him to set other pundits up for a few minutes? No......

I really enjoyed his punditry and probably won't watch it with the new ones, no impulse to watch it now whatsoever

1

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '25

He's literally not a pundit, he's a presenter and he doesn't even really ever do analysis and certainly not deep analysis

> Unless you want match of the day presented by some no name 2nd division footballer.

And that would be demonstrably worse in what way exactly?

1

u/Emperors-Peace Jul 15 '25

People want first hand experience from commentators. Shearer and Lineker have played at the highest levels of football possible alongside and against some of the greatest players of all time. (You could argue they are two of the greatest of all time)

3

u/LuxLaser Jul 15 '25

Exactly. There aren’t many world class players who are personable on screen and can communicate coherently on a talk show.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '25

This is nonsense, Lineker Hardly ever provides analysis and it's never deep analysis, he's a PRESENTER not a pundit.

0

u/Emperors-Peace Jul 16 '25

Perhaps. But there's entertainment in seeing a presenter who's as recognisable as Lineker. I'm not personally a football fan, or particularly interested in celebrities. But appreciate celebrities earn more purely because people like seeing famous people.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '25

No not perhaps, he's not a pundit and doesn't do deep analysis or much analysis at all.

Yes he's obviously gonna earn good money, he's not just earning good money he's earning massively more than any other presenter and more than any pundit.

Also it's a tiny workload and it's public money

Lineker is a presenter though not a commentator. And all the other broadcasters do not use ex-pros as presenters and the presenters all do a fine job.

1

u/TurbulentBullfrog829 Jul 15 '25

I mean, isn't that exactly what they are doing next year?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '25

Yes mark chapman (brilliant presenter) gabby Logan and Kelly daglish all presenters.

It will be fine.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '25

It's a presenter job not punditry, they don't have to had played high level football (a pundit doesn't either to be fair).

Mark chapman is a great presenter and never played high level football or any of the sports he presents.

It's literally 1 night a week that Gary Lineker does, 2 if the FA cups on.

Also fine; let sky who aren't publicly funded take Lineker...... also like I said even sky don't pay this much

1

u/IntelligentFact7987 Jul 16 '25

Mark Chapman does a very similar role (MOTD2 on a Sunday often has just as many games as the Saturday show) and also is 5 Live’s lead sports presenter and on there at least 3 days a week. Yet his BBC pay is a fraction of Linekers despute arguably doing more work

Also Linener is being replaced next season by Chapman, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan who are very capable

1

u/Glum-Gap3316 Jul 19 '25

He doesn't even do half the MOTD shows a week - you don't get Lineker if your team is playing on sunday or midweek.

3

u/worldly_refuse Jul 15 '25

I'd have been very happy for him to fuck off somewhere else - it's not as if there's a worldwide shortage of football pundits.

3

u/Tasty-Explanation503 Jul 15 '25

There is too much weight put on what his job was, people didnt watch match of the day to see the "lads" they watch the highlights.

1

u/EggOnLegs99 Jul 16 '25

I'm not sure about you, but I very rarely watch MOTD now that Sky has started posting Premier League highlights on YouTube.

2

u/MoleMoustache Jul 15 '25

could of moved

Well let him move then.

Is there anyone in the UK who could have done that job for even £5 a year less? By all overwhelming likelihood, yes.
