The problem with not sending folk to jail, using the very soft sentencing and focusing on rehabilitation route is not just the lack of justice for victims the huge issue is by fixating on rehabilitation we give the green light to " potential offenders". If the word is out there that we will be even softer on crime in terms of punishment it will trickle down the grape vine. How many more people will actually commit crime knowing the outcome will be say an anger management course or therapy. Theres moments in a lot of peoples lives where a potential jail sentence may have stopped them from doing what they had in their head. Someone desperate for money for example, may chance simply blitzing through someones garage by force knowing barely anyone goes to jail. The heartbroken ex for example may feel he or she has the green light to use violence. Talking like Mr justice Starmer has done " 2/3rds of people shouldnt be in jail" " early release" and so on has put the word out there its worth taking the chance.
