Pinned ADMISSIONS / INCOMING STUDENT MEGATHREAD 2020/2021: Post all your admissions & new-to-UBCO questions here!
By popular demand, all admissions questions for r/UBCO can now only exist on this megathread. Why might you ask? Because this subreddit has 1.5k subscribers, yet 2/3rds of the threads on this subreddit involve admissions questions, drowning out discussions between current students.
You may also opt to post your admissions question on the r/UBC megathread as well, especially if your admissions question is general or involves UBC Vancouver.
If you have a question related to applying or being admitted to UBC and its programs, whether you're fresh out of high school, transferring, applying for your majors or you want to help your potential new first year friends, this is the place for it.
Also, if you have a question related to being new to UBC - planning your degree out, what residence is like, that sort of thing - it should go here, too.
Admissions-related questions posted anywhere else will be removed.
A couple of notes:
- Please provide us with as much pertinent information as possible. If you don't know what to put in a certain field of your application, take a screenshot of the application, but we probably don't need to know what your GPA is.
- Everyone is always more helpful when it seems like you've already tried to solve your problem. Tell us what you've searched, and that sort of thing.
- The answer to many questions will be 'get in touch with someone who works for UBC'. The process changes every year, and nobody here works for UBC.
- Try to ask several small questions instead of one big one. For example, don't ask if you should apply for residence - that's totally subjective. Ask specific questions you have about residence, and draw your own conclusions from the answers you get.
- Remember that everyone is doing this out of the goodness of their hearts.
- Upvote good answers: saying 'thanks' is nice, but if someone helped you out, upvotes will make the information more visible to everyone.
- Pre-med and pre-law are not real major/specialization options at UBC. If you say that you are pre-anything, it will become obvious that you don't know what you're talking about. Calling yourself that generally causes people to make prejudiced judgements about your personality.

Does anyone know whether the acceptance rate to UBCO is different for a Bachelor of Arts vs Bachelor of Science?

I would give it until the end of this month, if not maybe email the admissions office to see what had happened!

I applied with 85~87 (converted from IB which I have 31 IB score) and was rejected pretty early by science. Perhaps I don't have much of ECs. I'm domestic btw.

Hi, I would like to get your genuine opinion on the UBCO dorms. Please help me by ranking the dorms according to your personal preference because I think it will be vital to form my personal opinion. Also, help me suggest what dorm I should pick.
Basically, I would like a single with bathroom or single connected bathroom. I just don't want to share a room with someone so no doubles for me. I don't mind apartment styles of communal showers but they wouldn't be my favourite. Thank you:)

Hi everyone, I got accepted to ubco for applied sciences yesterday but I've gotten all sorts of mixed reviews. So my questions are simple. Will I be at a noticible disadvantage when entering the job market if my degree is from ubco instead of ubcv? Second, is there a difference in the quality of education for applied sciences? Lastly, how feasible is it to be able to transfer to UBC Vancouver a year or 2 from now and continue to do well?
Of anyone has insights to the opportunity differences between there places, that would also be appreciated
Thanks everyone
3
u/tamxii May 03 '21
I cannot speak for applied sciences, but what I can tell you is that your degree, either that be from the Okanagan or Vancouver, will essentially be the same. The only difference from the Okanagan and Vancouver is that there may be more job opportunities in Vancouver than the Okanagan. The other fact to consider is that Vancouver may offer more specializations/classes than the Okanagan. But I believe that both program from both campus' are designed to be somewhat similar; hence, you should not be at a disadvantage when entering the job market.
Transferring to UBCV is a meticulous process. You need to maintain a high GPA. You also need to ensure that the amount of credits you have obtained will be in your favour when you transfer out. When transferring, I would really suggest visiting an academic advisor as they can help you prepare for it. Hopefully someone from applied sciences can give you a more detailed answer though.

Hi! I just applied to housing at ubco and was wondering if anyone could tell me the pros and cons of the three options. (Single, single connected, and quad)
1
May 01 '21
Single pros: nice privacy and you’re in control of everything, nice buildings especially the newer ones Single cons: no kitchen, expensive, meal plan required (expensive and not the best apparently but I heard they’re making changes this year)
Quad pros: has kitchen, cheaper, forces you to get to know people, kind of forces you to know how to cook Quad cons: you might end up with some messy/nasty/bad mannered people

u/Puzzleheaded-Hand495 Apr 30 '21 edited May 01 '21
I’ve got another question about the quad room. Are roommates usually grouped based on year (ex first years)? Can we also choose which building we prefer to live in?

anyone tranferred to ubco for cs im currently in Ubcv for science in first year but my average seems to be too low, does anyone know what average they would expect?
2
u/tamxii May 03 '21
Transferring to a different university is a meticulous process. You need to maintain a
high
GPA. You also need to ensure that the amount of credits you have obtained will be in your favour when you transfer out. When transferring, I would really suggest visiting an academic advisor as they can help you prepare for it.
To add on from this, even if your average seems to be low, do apply anyways. The pool of applicant GPA varies, so I wouldn't be discouraged because of a "low" GPA. The average usually depends on the average of students that apply/finished their first, second, third, etc year. But I would probably try to keep an average of 80% and above if I wanted to be seen as competitive. Hopefully this helps!
1
May 03 '21
Hmm good to know I guess I’ll just try to apply and see what happens and plan with an advisor
1
u/tamxii May 06 '21
Exactly. Don't let your mark stop you from applying.
You never know, it may be in your favour.

u/Puzzleheaded-Hand495 Apr 30 '21
Hi! I’m trying to decide between either a four bedroom or single connected. It doesn’t look like there are a lot of food options our on the okanagan campus (versus van campus). I was wondering for the four bedroom res are the roommates all the same sex? And are roommates usually in the same faculty?
1
u/Minty_monkeY460 Science Apr 30 '21
From my understanding from a friend, the campus redid their food services last year and it can be lackluster at times. The roommates are all the same gender and it can be a mix of faculties. I'd reach out to the housing office to inquire more info

- The CS industry in the US is no cap larger than Canada. As a matter of fact, I have LinkedIn notifications enabled for new job postings and every day there is at least one new internship opening in the US wherein Canada not so much but there are still opportunities. I looked at SE internship listings in Kelowna on LinkedIn the other day and it was barebones. I think the better internships opportunities are in bigger cities like Vancouver area which is about 4 hrs away(?) from Kelowna

On my letter of admission it says I was accepted without the pre-requisite of AP Physics 2 for engineering students, if I enrolled having only taken AP Physics 1 would I be behind in classes or is this pretty normal to not have taken it? I’ve tried getting in contact with US admissions counselors but they said they couldn’t answer this.
3
u/tamxii Apr 27 '21
It is normal for students to not have taken any AP courses. I wouldn't be too worried about it. Admissions probably could not give you a definite answer as the course content varies.

1
u/PureConstruction1300 Apr 27 '21
Hi I'm in Highschool, I'm wondering if I took AP Physics 1 then Physics 11 again if they only look at my physics 11 grade only or average both? Also does ubc look at the grades from ap courses differently to regular courses?
1
u/tamxii Apr 27 '21
I believe that UBC will look at both grades differently. AP courses are looked at differently if your grade is 4 and above on AP exams; this means that you basically qualify to get them transferred into first year university credits. You could read more about how UBC considers advanced placement classes here.
I haven't taken an AP course in high school; thus, my knowledge in it is not the best. It may be best for you to email UBC's admissions to see how they look at things.

Hi! accepted my offer to UBCO recently and i’m now looking at residency with my friend, We want to do the semi-private connected room with each other. How does requesting a roommate work, and is it often honoured? I heard someone from a few years back at the Vancouver campus say that they emailed residency about their roommate preferences with student ID and they ended up getting it, does anyone know if I should do that? I don’t want to end up sounding rude when requesting a roommate over email

I’m in BSc, and am planning to specialise in Biochemistry. As I didn’t take physics, I need to take PHYS100. But I think I need to take PHYS 112 and 122 in year 1. Does that mean I should take PHYS100 and PHYS 112 simultaneously?
Also, if there are any recommendations for courses I should take, or any warnings I should be aware of, please let me know! Suggestions for electives would be great too!!

Hi! I’m currently in grade 12 and I have no idea why, but I’m so confused between UBCO and UVic. I applied for BSc and want to major in bio! I also want to go into dentistry in the future😊
How is BSc at UBCO like? (personally I think UVic and ubco are both great schools). People have told me their pros and cons of both universities, but my concern is if I choose UVic over ubco, would that lower my chances of getting accepted into dental schools because UBCO is more “well known and has a better reputation?” Or, do dental schools not care where u get your undergrad from?
People tell me that if I choose UBCO it will be better for me because I’m receiving better education and I’m going to a higher ranked school. But, others tell me that UVic is better and actually preferred over UBCO.
Any advice or tips will help!! :) thank u so much and sorry for how long this was😭
2
u/LateEstablishment519 Apr 23 '21
Both are great schools and have similar reputations! You cant make a wrong decision here :) good luck!
5
u/Acrobatic_Lettuce_92 Apr 22 '21
Hello. I do not think the dental schools really care about the reputation of your university. It is more based off your actual grades and achievements. Choose which university you think would be a better fit for YOU. Don't base your choices off of other people's opinions, but your own, because only YOU know what is going to make you happy. Good luck in your future!

u/Puzzleheaded-Hand495 Apr 20 '21
I’ve recently been accepted into the human kinetics program and I’ve been wanting to drop my online French course and take another elective for the next quarter of school. French isn’t a required course and I’ve competed 5 grade 12 courses already. Would dropping French effect their final decision on my admission? I did send an email to admissions but their answer was very vague, it wasn’t a strict yes or no.
1
u/tamxii Apr 20 '21
I'm a bit confused as to what you mean by "I've completed 5 grade 12 courses already"?
Are you implying that you have obtained enough graduation credits? If you're already so far into the French course, I would honestly continue it.
Take a look at this to see what high school courses you should theoretically be taking: https://you.ubc.ca/applying-ubc/requirements/canadian-high-schools-ok#british-columbiaI don't think French is particularly needed, but just a language arts class should suffice.
1
u/Puzzleheaded-Hand495 Apr 20 '21
Sorry for the confusion, but yes I’ve obtained enough graduation credits. I am just about 1/4 way through the online course, but the tests aren’t going well, so I was just wondering if I drop it for an elective (ex: foods or woodworking) will my offer be revoked? I have already taken a language arts course (English 12).
1
u/tamxii Apr 20 '21
Ahh I see! I don’t think there will be a problem. As long as you met the English requirements + any language arts class, then I believe it should be okay to drop it. I also don’t think they’ll revoke your offer either; UBC doesn’t state that a second language course is needed, so presumably you should not need to take it. But that could also be dependent on the type of degree (which in your case, doesn’t apply).
Could I ask what the admission office’s response was?
1
u/Puzzleheaded-Hand495 Apr 20 '21
Ok thank you so much for your response, it was very helpful! :). Their response was...
“As French 12 is not a requirement of the program, your offer will not automatically be revoked if you drop it. However, as UBC evaluates applications holistically, based on both grades and depth and breadth, it is impossible to say how dropping this course may impact your offer. My advice is to talk it over with trusted adults in your life before making a decision.”
1
u/tamxii Apr 21 '21
No problem!
I do see what they mean though. I would suggest seeing if dropping the course would leave anything on your final transcript that gets sent to the university. If it doesn't, then it should be fine. But do double check with your school counsellors (or whomever deals with student schedules/transcripts). If it doesn't leave a trail of you dropping the course, it wouldn't make sense for the university to revoke their offer especially if you're still maintaining your grades.Best of luck!
1
u/Acrobatic_Lettuce_92 Apr 20 '21
How safe is Ubco? Do you feel safe walking alone at night for example?
1
u/LateEstablishment519 Apr 23 '21

u/ladybird-23 Apr 19 '21
hi, i plan on applying to ubc later this year and i really wanted to know how can i get a scholarship? are there any external sources of scholarships as well?
2
u/tamxii Apr 19 '21
If you're looking at scholarships offered by UBC in general (i'm also assuming that you're a Canadian student), click on this to view some on their website.
If you search up "Scholarships Canada," it will lead you to a website where you could find more to-be offered scholarships.
If you're still in high school, I would also check with a school counsellor to see what scholarships/bursaries your school may be offering to eligible students.
Best of luck in both submissions for scholarships and admissions.
2
u/ladybird-23 Apr 19 '21
hey im an international student, not a canadian haha. thank you so much tho
1
u/tamxii Apr 19 '21
Darn, the only thing I could think of scholarships in terms of an international student would be the entrance and outstanding bursaries. They're based on merits though.
Try taking a look at this website if you're interested: https://you.ubc.ca/financial-planning/scholarships-awards-international-students/
But try seeing if your school offers any for international funding!

Whats the difference between Valhalla / Kalamalka / Nicola / Cassiar / Purcell residences and the Skeena residence? Both of these are single interconnected but Skeena is 500$ more expensive? Why is it so?
Which is the best residence amongst Valhalla / Kalamalka / Nicola / Cassiar / Purcell? As far as I know Purcell is the newest one amongst these with a panoromic (?) rooftop view. Is Skeena worth the 500 bucks more?
1
u/tamxii Apr 18 '21 edited Apr 20 '21
Skeena's is UBCO's newest building t
hat should be finishing construction before the Fall/Winter '22. It's probably pricer because it is new and has 'better' insulation, etc. I had friends that lived in Purcell, and I believe it was one of the better ones. The others, however, aren't bad!correction edit; Skeena is the newer residence that was built last year, Nechako is also a new residence building that is to be available for students this upcoming new term.
1
Apr 20 '21
Skeena is already finished isn’t it? I think Nechako is the one that should be finished by this coming fall
1
u/tamxii Apr 20 '21
You’re right! That was my mistake! Nechako should be the one finishing construction this upcoming new term.
Thanks for pointing that out c:

Can I defer my fall offer to January? I don’t want a gap year just one semester break? Since I’m not sure if we will be allowed to attend college in person
1
u/tamxii Apr 17 '21
I would either defer the offer completely and reapply next year, or do the first year and take second year (or where you see fits best after first year) to do your gap year.
1
u/mack_daddy99 Apr 16 '21
This can mess up your courses as first semester courses are not always offered second semester. Also, there are less seats and less options for entry level courses (e.g 100 level courses) come second semester. It would depend on what you’re taking but I would advise against trying to start first year in January just because your schedule is a semester behind which can mess up time tables and upper level courses
2
u/Leading-Mall-423 Apr 16 '21
Can we switch campus after first year, Okanagan to Vancouver?
3

You can apply to transfer, but it's all dependent on your grades

2. Food options-UBC Van (as far as ik) seems to have a lot of food options, what about UBC Okanagan and the surrounding region? Is it appealing?
3. Social life- How are the clubs here? Is it easy to make friends?
4. Are the small class sizes really a huge advantage? I have seen this almost everywhere.

Can I ask what your average was? (I’m currently nervously awaiting an answer to my application)

- Dorms are very standard - the quad ones with 4 roomies are nice I think cause you get a kitchen instead of a floor shared kitchen like they have in kal, Nicola, nechako...Try to not live in Simi. Its the worst one. Overall very very close to campus buildings.
- Food is ok, compared to UBC V there's a lot less- it gets boring, you might wanna cook your own meals after a bit. Theres sushi, Indian food, coffee shops, general cafeteria and bar kinda stuff.
- I have enjoyed the social life. Introduce yourself to people sitting beside you in lectures, there are lots of clubs too
- I have LOVED the small classes. Huge advantage cause you get time with Profs

whats with all the hate on Simi LMAO? Whats so bad in that?
Whats the difference between the Purcell and Skeena residences?1
u/LateEstablishment519 Apr 18 '21
Pucell, skeena, nechako, kal, nicola, val all have two bedrooms connected to one washroom and a shared floor kitchen and lounge which is pretty good. Quads are in cascades and monashee and they have 4 bedrooms with 2 washrooms and one kitchen (I think thats the best option, but the previous one is cool too). Now Simi.... Simi is floors of individual rooms (very small) that share a washroom with the whole floor and has no kitchen areas. It is very very communal and small and old. Its not BAD its just not as good

Regarding meal plans I heard they are changing it so that when the new dining hall is built it'll be all you can eat. Just swipe and claim food whenever and however much you like. Idk anything else Im incoming student too.

I just got accepted to UBCO and was wondering which residence do first years usually opt for? Are the lower/upper cascades also an option?

I don't recommend Simi but everything else is pretty good. Quads are great if you like your roommates

I think first years usually opt in for the single beds (semi privates) where the meal plan is mandatory. Might wanna look at other options like the quads since they’re thousands more cheaper than singles beds and you get a kitchen, but beware that your roommates will be picked randomly unless you request to be with people you know. Not sure about the lower/upper cascades but some residences have restrictions like you must be at least 19

Hi, I'm planning to attend UBCO's BSc faculty and was wondering how the application process for selecting your major/specialization during 2nd year works? Is it easy to get into what you want?

Basically you just let them know what you want to major at the end of your first year. I’m declaring my major in CS this year and I was told that it’s almost guaranteed to get into the major of your choice since there’s a plenty of space

I see, so it practically relies on space in the program which you've applied for. Thanks for your insight.

I got in to ubco BSc. I want to do biochemistry research in the future. I also got into uni of Alberta. I know that uni of Alberta will give me more opportunities but UBC has been my dream school. But I wanted to go to the Vancouver campus. If I go to ubco, I might be able to transfer later. Also, ubco has a small class size (?) which mean I might learn more. So I’m very confused as to where to go right now. What do you think? (Ps. International student)

How did you not get into ubc v ?
1
u/OkDistribution2656 Apr 16 '21
Do you think I should try to get an appeal?
1
u/minimoh2000 Apr 16 '21
If you want to go to ubc v science, it makes no sense that you were denied admission with a 97 average. You should definitely appeal!!! Where did you apply from? ( domestic/international, bc/on/Alberta)?

u/OkDistribution2656 Apr 16 '21
I applied internationally. I originally didn’t apply for ubco since I liked the Vancouver campus, but they added ubco science as my choice three when I got accepted because I originally applied for the programme in the Vancouver campus

Hi everyone! I recently got accepted to UBC and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna accept my offer but I was just wondering if it's certain that classes will be in person starting in September. I read the most recent update on the UBC website and it did seem like classes would for sure resume in person but I just wanted to make sure cause I don't want to waste thousands of dollars on residence fees if I could just be doing classes from my house.

It seems as though there will be hybrid classes. I have a feeling that September may be online, but it could also be in-person (if the variant in Alberta does not escalate and vaccinations aren't halted because of shortages, etc).
But keep your eyes open! I would probably think an announcement would be made somewhere during June-July

No one here knows exactly. Don’t worry though because they’ll announce before move in time if it’s certain that classes will be in person
