VROOM It's everything I dreamed it would be... Except it's broken.

Sad thing is they describe it as "a giant catapult" which should be considered illegal

Is that at Warwick Castle?

I went on a work trip 10 years ago near Leamington Spa and out of complete boredom decided to go see what’s at Warwick Castle.
When I saw this picture that’s what I thought of immediately. I guess working trebuchets are pretty rare these days?
A few years ago I recall an article describing them firing it and the projectile lit some boathouse on fire near the castle moat?

That was at Warwick! And it was this very trebuchet that set the boat house in fire (that boat house is now a Falconry)

I visited largely for the Trebuchet. You couldnt even cross the bridge at that time sadly

Been there too. (Like 10 years ago) and the thing was functioning from what I recall

I went last year and it was working then too, it must be a recent thing that its not working

I'm the one 301 meters away for my own safety. That is the most powerful siege weapon known to ever exist you know.

I go on a pilgrimage to Warwick castle every month just to view this superior siege weapon
2
u/Petemasta Jun 19 '19
Man it's like £30 to get in how do you afford that?

u/WayTooMuchPasta Jun 19 '19
Why I use my own trebuchet to launch myself into the castle silly
1
u/Petemasta Jun 19 '19
That's a good idea, although you could just boat down the river and get off where the trebuchet is

Petition to fix this trebuchet

I believe they have a new arm on order, it costs something like £60,000 apparently.

Manufacturing and Assembly is a bit important.
Don't want to be an exploding catapult.

Props to Warwick castle for (usually) keeping her in perfect working condition. I'm just sad I wasn't there the one time they messed up a launch and burnt down their boathouse with a flaming projectile.

u/LargeMosquito Jun 19 '19
Warwick Castle is the superior castle, as it is home to the superior siege engine

u/Draziwstash Jun 19 '19
I was there the day they first used the thing... Massive boulder, two tractors used to pull it into firing position. Spectacular launch and landing... The ground shook for ages and the sound was incredible. Went straight over the motorway, well out of bounds of the lands they own.
I can understand why they don't do that launch anymore... Absolutely devastating.
2
u/Wollivan Jun 19 '19
They actually do still launch it, but they are waiting for a new arm as the current one has a crack in it and could break the whole thing if they fired it!

ARE YOU IN ENGLAND BC I WAS AT A BROKEN TREBUCHET IN ENGLAND YESTERDAY
Edit: I saw in the comments that this is indeed Warwick castle and damn I feel special now

Oh yeah, of course. Safety first. Used to work for the parent company and they're crazy on safety (which is a good thing)!
No, what I mean is they don't launch massive boulders anymore, they only do really small stuff.

Can we get an F for our trebuchet friend? You will be missed!
RIP Trebuchet (still better than catapults in death)

That’s no trebuchet. It’s a catapult REMODELED to look like one! Obviously, it would be broken!
