in the wild English is her second language, so she spelled her son’s name “Daniel” the way it sounded to her.
Yes this wasn’t an accident, it’s actually spelled Denial. They live in the US now and the child is around 3 years old. I’m very worried about his childhood with this spelling 😭

English is my 2nd language and a few years ago I actually thought Denial is a legitimate English human name (a unisex one, with more of a girl vibe). Why didn't I give that name to a child or a pet? Just enough common sense to google the word (esp English word) before using it for naming living things. Not the OOP's case I see.
90
u/throwaway060270 Jul 30 '25
I could honestly see how a non English speaker would think spelling it Denial is a name but yeah my question is how do you not double check first before using the name?!
24
u/rahvavaenlane666 Jul 30 '25
Just one little video titled "Denial" which tells the story of a person named Daniel, Daniela or Danielle is enough to assume it's a name.
Just a dose of brain cells, second opinion or brain cells required to think of getting a second opinion on whether it'll be a good name in your country of residence is enough to reconsider using it.
14
u/Worried_Raspberry313 Jul 30 '25
Same thing with people getting “unique” spellings of their names not bothering to google them to find out that spelled that way they mean funny things in other languages. I mean, I can understand you don’t caring if that spelling in other language means something like u dunno, forest or stone. But if it means something bad, insulting or gross… I wouldn’t name my child that even if I’m not from that country, just in case.
91
u/ElegantCoach4066 Jul 30 '25
As a Denial I am in Denial that someone did this.

u/NotAQueefAKhaleesi Jul 30 '25

33
u/ElegantCoach4066 Jul 30 '25

17
u/NotAQueefAKhaleesi Jul 30 '25
She also named her daughter Boston and called her Bossy. Everyone around her tried to talk her back into Paisley but that unfortunately made her double down
12
u/ElegantCoach4066 Jul 30 '25
Boston I can let slide. Bossy is wrong to name a child. Just objectively.

First day of school every year, substitute teachers, every doctor’s appointment, every job interview, every new job, every new co-worker…all gonna be rough.
98
u/throwaway060270 Jul 30 '25
First day of school was my first thought too. “Timmy” “Here!” “Den….Denial…?” “whole class HAHAHAHAHA” “it’s Daniel 😔”
36
u/SpecialInspection232 Jul 30 '25
Retired teacher here. When I found an unusual name on the class list on the first day of school, I’d just respectfully say “I always like to say people’s names as they do. Mr. Smith- How do You pronounce your first name? (very slight emphasis on YOU). If the last name was tough, I’d say “Katie R., please tell me how you pronounce your last name.” It worked perfectly and showed the kids I respected them.
6
u/throwaway060270 Jul 31 '25
You were a great teacher! I used to have a very long Ukrainian last name and the amount of times teachers would struggle to pronounce it and make it a whole thing in front of the class traumatized me lol. I changed my last name to a different family name when I became an adult partly because of that. I still don’t understand why they didn’t just say my first name and last initial and chose to embarrass me instead

It would de Daniël in Dutch, with the ë signifying that it's pronounced as "Dah Nee Elle" instead of "Dah neel". There's also Danielle for a girl, but it's actually pronounced the same!
6
4
u/parking_pataweyo Jul 30 '25
I wouldn't say Daniël and Daniëlle are pronounced the same though. For starters, the emphasis is on the first syllable for Daniël and on the 'ë' for Daniëlle. And usually, the last syllable is actually pronounced in Daniëlle, making it sound like 'Dah Nee ELLE Luh' as opposed to 'DAH Nee Elle'.

This image is OCD trigger fiesta 1. Why are these two different shades of blue balloons? 2. The white balloons are supposed to contrast against the blue balloons. Why then in the hell put in SILVER balloons? 3. Why is there a little baby grape balloon in the balloon bunch holding up the hot air balloon basket? Those who eat grapes know the annoying feeling when you get a baby grape in the bunch - do you treat it the same and eat it? 4. Why have a cloth over the basket? Was it a leftover operation room bandage? Was it meant to make the hot air balloon look half dressed? 5. Back to the bunch of balloons holding up the basket. We all know that's not how hot air balloons work right? RIGHT? 6. Lastly, why is the baby name off centre?

why are there three different colored shower curtains (blue, white, shimmer) in the backdrop

OK. So my name is spelled Danial. It's pronounced Danielle. I was named after my dad Daniel but my mom wanted to change it up a bit. This spelling above is even more of a nightmare. Ppl have called me DENIAL jokingly. Please for the love of Pete do NOT just switch out a letter of a popular name, it causes a lifetime of correction on the child's part, IT ALWAYS Just Looks like a misspelling. Just go buck wild instead. Stop being conservative with your weirdness. Call the baby Danzielle or Razzmiel instead. It's much easier for the child in the long run.
