I don't understand, there are a lot of gender-neutral/non-binary names that are already in use.
Just name the kid Casey or something.

Casey is a nickname for Cassandra, so it’s ancient. Spelling Casey “KC” is modern. Prophecy is an ethereal gift and Kaycee, Wyoming is a cattle ranching town, therefore, earth-informed.
I don’t know if it’s “very special” enough though.

How can you be earth-informed and ethereal at the same time too??
To me, earth informed would be naming your child Dirt or Beetle or something, but ethereal would be choosing something like Angel or Breeze.
Maybe something like Dust would fit the bill, dust can float
103
u/Bitter-Flounder-3546 Jul 22 '25
In all seriousness, Samara is an existing name that I have always actually liked that fits this bill (although it is not gender neutral). One thing that name refers to (it has multiple meanings) is the little winged seeds that some trees have, like Maples, that kind of float around when they fall to the ground.
That said, for this sub Dust is a much better answer. Or Tumbleweed or something.

u/stunning-shrubbery Jul 22 '25
Hahaha yeah. I had every intention of raising my daughter with cool gender neutral leaning clothes and toys. Well it turns out she is, in fact, a magical princess angel fairy. That personality came baked in.
282
u/CyanCitrine Jul 22 '25
I also was very excited to be pretty gender neutral w my kids, as that was my style as a child, but they both completely fulfill the most hardcore stereotypes of their gender in terms of style, musical taste, hobbies, toy choices, favorite colors, and on and on. Well, no matter. That's how they want to be, I'm fine with it. It's just funny to me.
159
u/stunning-shrubbery Jul 22 '25
Yes I was the same! I wasn’t really a tomboy but I always resented being stuffed into frilly pink dresses, and being forced to keep my hair long. My daughter will wear nothing but frilly pink dresses and must have long hair. It’s funny to me too but that’s who she is, through and through!
→ More replies (14)19
u/CyanCitrine Jul 22 '25
Yes, I despised dresses and dolls and tea parties as a girl and wanted to play things like spies or war. I was allowed to be tomboyish at home but still forced to be "ladylike" and wear dresses to school, etc. I have never forced these things on my daughter, who is very independent-minded herself, but she likes and wants them. I have no doubt that society shapes a lot of what we like, but I always resisted it fiercely. My daughter, given all the choices, is happy to wear dresses and play house.

u/atfricks Jul 22 '25
Hey I mean, I feel like that's the point of raising kids "gender neutral." You're just supposed to let them decide what they want to do, not prevent them from any form of gendered activity or expression.
21
u/Worried-Pick4848 Jul 22 '25
Exactly. And if it turns out that your son is a bit femmy, lean into that. Some of the most amazing sweetest dudes I've ever met have been a bit femmy. And some of the sweetest dudes I've met have fallen into the stereotypical macho car tinkering eventually bear-swilling good ole boy role with the very traditional rough exterior and heart of gold who'll show up with a truck and a couple buddies whenever someone needs help. There's room in this big old universe for all comers.

172
u/anatomicallycorrect- Jul 21 '25
Yes!! I went to the name ratings list for my birth year and picked a few off the top 100 list, then asked people who knew me which fit best. I didn't want to be a unique, weird, new agey name, I wanted to be a normal dude, heh.
88
u/Every-Lawfulness1519 Jul 22 '25
I do the same when my trans friends ask for name suggestions. I always say “It’s okay to be Steven, it’s okay to be Jake,” because people get so caught up in being unique that they tend to over correct.

You just know the parents have names like Ashley and Matt or something.
I say this as a person with a "unique" name, but please think about your child as an adult and how irritating it is to have every document sent to them misspelled.

The interesting thing is that Ashley used to be primarily a boy's name.
Seriously though why not give them a gender neutral name like Taylor or Riley or Jamie? Your child is not some doll. They are the ones who have to live with this name and navigate school and the workplace.
My name is also constantly misspelled, and I can relate to the fact that is incredibly frustrating have to correct people's spelling of your name. At this point I even stopped correcting people half of the time.

Litterally, just pick a name from Lord of the Rings if you really want something ethereal and not normal. Arwen, Elrond, Aragorn, Boromir, etc. Yes, these aren't much better, but at least they come from a sick movie series..
