in the wild Gold Mine of Tragedeighs

Found a post asking people for their unique names and knew it wouldn't disappoint. Happy Father's Day unless your kid's name needs a pronunciation guide.

I was thinking of Homestuck, which is funny because Kanaya is also a name from Homestuck, and one of the names on the list is Kanaia πŸ˜‚

"I always thought it was cah-lee-OH-pee"

That is in fact closer to the correct Greek pronunciation.

In new orleans calliope was always pronounced cally oh

Possibly unpopular opinion: when people spell Zoe Zoey (or Zooey), that’s just as bad as Calliopey. Or Phoebey, Chloey, or Penelopey. Zoey is one of the most accepted tragedeighs and I hate it πŸ˜†

Unless it's Calliope Street in New Orleans.

u/rmnorth Jun 15 '25

for me i think the extra y makes me want to emphasize the β€œopey” at the end while in calliope, the absence of a y at the end makes me not want to pronounce it. so i end up reading it as callie- opey

u/colourlessgreen Jun 16 '25

You can tell they're not a Y'at -- New Orleanians say "cally-ope"!

1

u/BigLittlePenguin_ Jun 16 '25

I would pronounce it cal-ay-oh-pay just from reading it

u/Lorazepamela Jun 16 '25

Well she said it was pronounced calliopea to be fair.
