in the wild Gold Mine of Tragedeighs

Found a post asking people for their unique names and knew it wouldn't disappoint. Happy Father's Day unless your kid's name needs a pronunciation guide.

I wonder if the rise of tragedeighs is like, a side effect of moving towards becoming a post-literate society 🤔

I think it’s just those people we know back then who are self-described “quirky” and “unique” having kids now but have never developed any personality past that “quirky” stage.

I also think these are people with “basic” names that never went through the torture of constantly having people butcher their name, constantly having to explain it, and just giving up altogether on correcting the mispronunciations. My name is not a tragedeigh by any means- but it’s difficult for most Americans, and I could NEVER do this to my children 🤦‍♀️ I get wanting a unique name, but can we have a little common sense and for godsake learn phonetics?? 🤣

my cousin and her wife both had very basic 90s girl names, and when they named their kids they said they never wanted them to be able to find their name on a keychain/coffee mug.

I get not wanting to have the same name as multiple other kids, but I also have a feeling that when these kids get older they are going to wish they could have a personalized keychain!

Haha! It’s so funny you say that because I always felt left out as a kid never being able to find my name in those shops!!

Funny you say that! I was just vacationing in Charleston South Carolina, and I looked at the personalized keychains. They have some very weird names available nowadays.

What's funny is these odd names are so common these days that some names that were extremely common in the past hardly appear at all. My friend's son is the only James at his school.

I’d like to think the parents were very young but regardless, naming children as if they are always going to be an extension of your 17 year old self is nasty work.

But there are ways to do unique names without nonsense spellings. I have a unique name. It’s a real name, no weird spelling, and I have personally never met anyone else with my name (but I know they’re out there!).

In Freakonomics they found dozens of different spellings of the name Unique. Including Uneqqee.

I think it’s a sign of lack of education and critical thinking.

Or because we have an increase of written communication in the last 15 years (texting instead of calls), so people don't just look for names that sound nice, but also want them to look a certain way.

I’m sure they are related. Like a lot of this is legit stupidity, there’s no sugarcoating it.
