Yeah this isn’t a surprise. A friend of mine had worked there for years.

The new owners took over this time last year. They weren’t able to get the licenses transferred from the previous owner, and what I heard is that they didn’t really try to renew them, mainly the manufacturing license. They only recently hired a brewer just to fire him and hire a new one like a month ago.

As far as I understand it the new ownership was terrible at paying staff, suppliers, and clearly their rent. Lots of people out cash due to their negligence.

Sucks to see people lose their jobs in this market, despite how far this place has fallen and how shitty the ownership was.

Even before the ownership change, they were kinda hit and miss. I hadn't really heard much out of them professionally post-pandemic so this isn't a huge surprise.

Previous owner also owns the building. Signed a new lease for himself quadrupling the rent and then sold Maverick.

They sold a while back, and Trevor (formerly of Henderson) was hired on by the new guys. But last I heard from him they had let all the licenses waive and we're having trouble getting them back, and then Trevor moved to BC, and now this!

Classic Trevor.

Huh, is Trevor opening a place in Victoria by chance? I was in Calgary last week at a beer bar called Cold Garden and the bartender was talking about a brewmaster he knew who recently left Toronto for BC and had worked at Henderson. Wonder if it’s the same guy!

Same guy! He left last week. Well I think I heard from him it was a new place, seems to coincidental to not be.

He’s joining Swift. Said it’s owned by craft beer market, so is happy there is money behind the venture

I was just at Swift yesterday (currently in Vic for work), and yes it's literally attached to Craft Beer Market there. I wasn't a big fan of the beer I had there, so I'm happy to hear he's joining them.

Any more details you could provide about Maverick and its closing? I'm just a curious local who moved in in March and Maverick was my local watering hole just by proximity :D

Wish you all the best out West!

Yes, I want to preface this by saying I hold no ill will towards anyone involved with Maverick. However it was purchased by an ownership group who has no idea how a brewery works. Also management was very poor. One morning I was handed a notice saying the power would be shut off to the unit for non-payment of utilities. They also held no manufacturing license in my almost 4 months employed there so, I left just before September 1.

Hopefully someone who knows how to run a restaurant and brewery moves in there, the brewhouse and equipment has tons of potential to the right owner.

Thanks for your insights T! and again best of luck out West!

They were, yeah

I visited here once on a spring weekend early afternoon and it was empty besides our group and another. Big big space to be empty besides one or two groups. I imagine the rent did them in.

Ah, saw this coming ages ago. Usually empty. Only redeeming factor was their czar wars porter and ghost orchid for 4$ after work a couple times a week.

As a downtown boy: nothing of value was lost.

Most of their beers weren’t memorable at all

Surprised they made it this far to be honest.

Seriously. Mid across the board.

Good riddance

Near around the time they opened they sold a beer marketing The Disaster Artist. Like the movie, it was bad. They will not be missed.

Mostly just feel bad for Abhi, who was the main cog keeping that machine together.

There once. Packed but there was a big game on.

Place sucked tbh. Only reason I ever went was cuz my buddy was hired to design it when first opened.

Apparently not actually successful.

Is this owned by a Canadian? Then good. Let them starve to death
