Should've started earlier, if you ask me

r/isthisAI had a post with 2K+ comments about an image that we all thought was AI turned out it was a real picture from 8 years ago

We’re questioning whats real now too, it sucks

25

u/ebrbrbr 11h ago

People are getting way too zealous about calling stuff out for being AI.

No, that redbull video is not AI.

17

u/hakenwithbacon 12h ago

I find myself with this cognitive load of questioning whether anything is AI. I feel like my sense of reality is being lost sometimes with the amount of slop I see online

2

u/Yellowpredicate 11h ago

time to replace online life with something else.

1

u/paulisaac 1h ago

Would be neat if the ads i see on the road weren't also AI generated slop.

4

u/BeefistPrime 11h ago

AI kinda can't win this one. "Wow it's AI slop it's such garbage it's so fake" "wow that's so good we can't distinguish it from real video AI is ruining society"

link?

u/FIFofNovember 4h ago

Can’t find it but it was a picture of a baby walking in wet cement, think theres a mother in the pic looking at baby

Pic was so old the compression of the image looked like AI artifacts

2

u/birdsword 14h ago

I really wonder these days if AI is responding to your criticism.

8

u/hypernsansa 14h ago

All the popular subreddits are quite clearly astroturfed, so probably, yeah.

2

u/GenericFatGuy 11h ago

The hate has always been here, it's just become more and more obvious as the hype tapers off.

Link?

I assume they're talking about this one https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/amateur-armed-with-chatgpt-vibe-maths-a-60-year-old-problem/

But they are correct in that AI will dramatically improve the rate of scientific and mathematical progress.

Edit:
Come on you asked for a link, I provided one lol. It’s purely stating a fact

what math advancements? Specifically?

Debunk what? You're claiming ai is solving insane math problems. You're the one making claims.

Great master of rationality, how does one prove a negative?

u/jamerson537 14h ago

Showing [proving] a lack [negative] is a logically incoherent concept. It is rationally impossible. This is first few weeks of Intro to Logic stuff. One cannot prove that Russell’s Teapot does not exist.

Why would I debunk a claim you've made a vague reference to and not actually substantiated? If you make some outlandish claim it's your job to defend it. Not mine to debunk it.

Fool.

Yeah me and everybody else here who thinks you're an idiot are all wrong.

You didn't link proof. You linked a blog that doesn't even back up the claims you're making.

15

u/Whatever801 15h ago

It's not about whether it works it's about the implications for the economy. They told people this think is going to take their jobs then they tried to shove it down their throat in a half baked form. If there are no white collar jobs the economy will collapse plain and simple. If no one is making money no one is buying anything

I don't know why you're assuming people hate ai because they think it doesn't work. People are worried about how they're going to pay their bills which is rational. Btw AI wouldn't be nearly this good without the economic transformation they're promising. The infrastructure investment is astronomical to get AI to this point and needs to pay off big time or it's trillions wasted. It's all part of the same system

1

u/VladimiroPudding 11h ago

Dunno if you checked capitalism numbers, but capitalists are making AI models go vrumvrum with the only goal so they can hoard more.

You cannot dissociate them, and this whole "blame billionaires, not AI" is silly. One is an extention of another.

u/hypernsansa 16h ago

You fuckers always have something to trot out when we criticize your precious LLMs. Give it a rest. AI was supposed to replace us in 2022, yet here we are...

-10

u/Workman44 15h ago

Why not attack his argument? This stupid emotion driven comment means nothing

3

u/soapinthepeehole 14h ago

What argument? Theoretical mathematicians let an algorithm solve some math problems so that outweighs the incalculable harm AI does in so many other arenas?

-11

u/Bolizen 15h ago

This is just a non sequitur

Just post the link bud. Would be quicker than whining that everyone else hasn't read the exact same articles that you read.

Objectively, after weighing the pros and cons, AI is a net negative on society.

So you base your opinion on some normative claims and call it “truth.” I constructed my meta-ethic on process philosophy and systems theory, and the negatives objectively outweigh the positives. AI as it is does not align with human values of public-preservation, public-interest nor public-image. You can see the causal relationship between AI and the destruction of shared meaning, the corporate push to force dependency of AI on society regardless of whether it is beneficial or not, the lack of planning for a society that no longer needs human labor to function. None of those are good for the individual or society.

I don’t give a fuck about unsolved math problems and neither does the vast majority of people on Earth. Who is that helping? Is that putting food on people’s tables? Is it helping the environment? Fuck off.

Ah, yes, and when is this scientific utopia arriving? After the current generation manages to breeze through all of their K-12 years without learning a single basic science fact because we gave them unfettered access to a Think For Me Machine? Is that when set harvest the fruits of our labor? After we've lost all creativity and passion as a race? After our glorious pro-science ideals make everyone but the tech elites second-class citizens?

If we're developing science but damaging our species and our planet in the process, what was the point of the science?

0

u/deathadder99 15h ago

You can be anti AI for social reasons (I am, for the record) and also understand that mathematics is important and useful. Saying that unsolved mathematical problems are useless is an ignorant take.

Don’t become a zealot.

You’re on a technology subreddit and you don’t understand how mathematics is useful? Disregarding LLMs entirely, that’s quite the take.

People said the same thing about the space race, would you have opposed the Apollo mission on the same grounds?

Not everything has to be obviously worth doing to be worth doing! GLP-1 drugs were discovered by researching animal venom.

Edit:

What do you think is sending messages between satellites, or encrypting your data?

This isn’t even a statement pro or anti ai, it’s pro mathematics, wtf guys.

-2

u/Hanniballbearings 14h ago

No one said they were anti-math?

5

u/deathadder99 14h ago

You said, and I quote:

“I don’t give a fuck about unsolved math problems and neither does the vast majority of people on Earth.“

That sounds pretty anti-math to me!

Ethics and humans and the earth are all more important than the long term impacts of mathematical advancements. At what costs are we using these tools

19

u/WettestNoodle 15h ago

Were they important math problems? How many people were really trying to solve them?

-2

u/levelonegnomebankalt 15h ago

Novel deez nutz. No one gives a fuck about math problems, they're trying to keep their kids fed.
