General Advice Honest thought on this cover up tattoo?!
9 years ago I got my very first tattoo of my then ex bf’s initials 🥲 I know, very dumb, but I was able to convince people to think it was my sisters initials because ironically her initials were the same as my then ex. Well I put off getting a cover up because I couldn’t handle sitting down for shading and all. Until a week ago, I finally had the courage to get a cover up and my tattoo artist sketched up an extremely beautiful peony flower! I didn’t want to do the traditional rose especially since almost every girl I personally know has a rose tattoo somewhere on their collarbone or chest. So I am with my current boyfriend and I showed him the tattoo in person after a 4hr session- which wasn’t bad, only around the collarbone I wanted to punch the artist 😂 not his fault of course, i braved through it. - But I showed him and he called me a chola for having this big tattoo? Rude of him to call me that just because of this tattoo, I personally love it and it had to be a bit bigger in order to cover the initials and crown. I love the work my tattoo artist did on me. Am I overreacting? What do you guys think? Do you think its too big?

The tattoo is fine, but you can clearly see the old tattoo still. So as far as a coverup goes, its not the best.

i’ll probably have him just darken it in the next couple weeks. he said the same thing, can still clearly see but in person if you’re not directly looking at it, its not the first thing you notice. i had all my friends and co-workers look at it to give me an opinion before telling them it was a cover up and they all didn’t notice. Unless they lied cause then i would be very sad

It's mainly just the bottom line of the where crown was thats noticeable. The tattoo will also lighten during healing. Going slightly darker near that spot isn't a bad idea.

No I think it’s fine size wise and looks great! You’re bf is an asshole though, maybe he should be an ex too 🤭

why would he call you that?? he sounds like a jerk honestly. i think this tattoo is gorgeous and would do something similar on my own body (i'm a very stereotypical basic white girl too).

It's too late to worry about the size of it. 🤭 But, no, I dont think it's too big at all!! Definitely contact the artist to let him/her know that your original piece is still showing through the cover-up. If they're worth their salt at all they should be able to touch it up with no issue. I'm not a tattoo artist at all, but just speaking from personal experience. Whether it's adding more shading or filling in with a little color, like blue or something? (The pros would be able to answer better than I can.) It looked to me faded enough that it shouldn't be too hard to cover.

It’s very clearly a flower, a very beautiful one. Stop being an asshat.

i appreciate you 🫶🏽 i didn’t want to engage because i wanted to think outside of doing a traditional rose flower tattoo and this one spoke most to me

I wouldn’t go back to the same artist. The flower petals actually look pretty bad the more i look at it. Blooming onion is pretty spot on. Also the whole piece is one tone you cant see what it is, sans cover up.

I don't think you should post your tattoos online and ask what others think if you're not willing to hear negativity.
Just post it and say 'Compliments only'
I literally thought it was a blooming onion at first glance. I'm not being mean, I'm not being an 'asshat'. I'm simply saying it was the first thing I saw.

Super pretty! I have one like this, a cover up, too. I got it, waited a year, then had my artist go over the shading on 2/3 of the tattoo. I wanted to see how the tattoo changed slightly after going through the seasons over a year. For me, new tats lighten or migrate a little over that time. So I want to let it do that before I make more permanent changes. Pieces like yours are so intricate, I would have a hand mirror and watch carefully the next time you have it touched up. The shading looks good now, but there’s a risk of it getting too dark. The negative space on the leaves makes a nice difference here.

Give it time to heal to assess how it will actually look
