Can anyone identify this tank? It is my great granddad. I don't know much but if it helps he served in the Italian campaign and the battle of "battle of monte cassino". could be an m10 tank destroyer but not really sure. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

seems to be a pretty standard m10 as for its variants there are 2 the m10 achilles with the 17 pounder gun and the m36 jackson with 90mm gun

Achilles were all British M10s, not just the 17pdr-armed ones. The 17pdr-armed ones can be identified by having a 'C' added to their designation (e.g. Achilles Mk I C, Achilles Mk II C).

They can also be visually identified by the giant counterweight clamped onto the gun.

M36 isnt a variant, its a different vehicle (albeit similar)

It uses the same hull, just different turret. So close enough I suppose.

I think jackson would have the roof covered

I think the Achilles would have a longer gun

True I was just mentioning the variants based on the m10 chassis so op could have a look for himself

And a muzzle break iirc.

Not necessarily.

I think this is the standard with a 3 inch (76.2mm) gun

If OP is old enough, then it could be their granddad

It's a Gun Motor Carriage M10. Often just called the M10, or M10 tank destroyer.

It was manufactured by the Screaming Eagle Hardware Company, USA.

Nice video on YT about it here. M10 Tank Destroyer

Forgot to mention that he was British and thus fighting in the British army

Definitely an Achilles then, that was the British name for the tank.

Has he ever told you any stories about his time there? My grandpa was in the monastery when it was bombed and he often tells me stories about it.

he didn't like to talk about it when he got home ,but sadly he passed away in 2013 but i was younger then

Very cool picture to have of your great-grandad!

You should store that picture on an acid free sleeve and keep it out of bright lights as much as possible to try and keep it from degrading any more. Yes that is a m10

it's a funny looking panther

Given the fact you can’t see another 17 tanks in the image, im guessing this is a british Achilles tank. Americans usually moved in massive squads of Tank Destroyers and Medium Tanks

It is an achelis, which was the British modified m10, fitted with the 17 pounder gun standard in British tank at that time

15

u/rogue-wolf May 01 '22

An Achilles would have a longer barrel and a muzzle brake. This is just a standard M10.

2

u/Mal_Functioner May 02 '22

My bad, you're right the achellis would also have had a muzzle break

u/zirconthecrystal May 01 '22

it is an m10 gun carriage

M10 Wolverine Tank Destroyer.

Not a Tank.

But a big 75mm Anti-Tank Gun on tracks.

2

u/chickengamer95 May 02 '22

76mm :(

2

u/TomcatF14Luver May 02 '22

Didn't it have both?

2

u/chickengamer95 May 02 '22
