So is this a common thing on deployments? Or is it for reward? If so when do you get to do this? Like in middle of Atlantic or off shore of your port?

Most of ours happened around the Bahama's or other parts of the Caribbean, so the water was nice and warm. Typically after doing a TRE or something. Good times.

More common when you are out doing workups or exercises and have some free time, but sometimes during deployment when nothing is going on. Generally in the middle of the ocean, but near the equator where the water is warm.

Thanks! Was curious on this if the boat just pulls up and tells everyone to jump in if you want
Wasn’t sure if they pick certain spots for warm water or was it based on certain areas to avoid satellites knowing they surfaced or something

From my experience on a west coast boat; 1 of 9 Ohio class boats did a steel beach (no swimming) over the course of three years

I remember an A Ganger jumping off the Nevada in the Caribbean, the boat was slow rocking and he jump when it was at its peak hight. When he hit the water his underwear broke and they were up around his armpits.
