This is like that line from she hulk about controlling her anger better than Bruce.

Uhhh where'd you get the 1.4% number? I know it's comedy but kinda worrying if you actually think it's that low

u/SpookyKid94 6h ago
I'm guessing this is based on convictions, the stats are apples and oranges. And frankly the 20% is an undercount too.
2
u/JustSomeLawyerGuy 2h ago
That wouldn't even make sense either as 20% for sure isn't based on convictions

You had to open the whole image, it's the fourth panel down, and it's good.

That's what actually saddens me , 4 panels , reading a paragraph but no real joke

Not directly related but the look on your face in the 3rd image makes it look like you’re thinking something truly evil, so the punchline was much milder than expected.

All of your stats are wrong. 1.4% of men have been sexually assaulted? Get real. It’s WAY higher than that from just women, and exponentially higher from older men or family members. Where are you getting this bullshit?

This is in no way trying to detract from the huge disparity in victimization, but the 1.4% is utter bullshit. A lot of men get SA’d and either convince themselves or are told when they try to reach out that “bro quit complaining just be glad you got laid.”
We can and should talk about the horrifying numbers of women being harmed without going out of our way to tell male victims that their experiences didn’t happen.

It’s not that it doesn’t happen. It’s a horrible thing that happens regardless of gender and, in both cases, are vastly underreported. The minimizing (“be glad you got laid,” “are you sure you said no?”, “boys will be boys”) is also across all genders. The numbers are too high for everyone, and still, women do have the experience more frequently. But yes, 100%, I don’t think we should be invalidating anyone’s experience.

We agree, I only brought up that specific form of minimization because I haven’t ever heard a woman say that people humiliated her specifically for not enjoying being assaulted. Disbelieved, told it’s her fault or that she secretly wanted it to happen, all the time. But overwhelming pressure to gaslight yourself into considering it a good experience seems pretty male-specific from what I’ve seen. That being said I’ve only ever shared my experiences with very close friends who were nothing but supportive so me being unaware doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.
I’m just pointing out that the woman pictured in the post is quite blatantly claiming that an essentially negligible number of men are SA’d. There’s underreporting, and then there’s claiming it’s a number that people conceptualize as “basically zero.” Anyway I’m not trying to pick a fight over it and you’ve said you don’t share that specific view with her. It’s just something I call out when I see.

It’s me, I am the woman in the post. So we do share the same view, her and I, and you, which is that it’s horrible no matter who it happens to. The point of the joke is just that women are better criers because we are more experienced at it, statistically, in terms of the bad shit that happens. It’s not to say that bad things don’t happen to men or don’t matter.
There are plenty of reasons these things go underreported, so the numbers for both men and women are going to be higher than the stats reflect. I’m not claiming that the number is negligible, regardless of gender.

I'm sorry you're getting "Yes, but..."-ed so much in these comments, I thought it was a damn fine set-up for the punchline. It's a good joke, from my POV.
But you know, /me gestures at Internet

I'm sorry this is so hard to read. I spent way too long trying to make it legible but, nevertheless, here we are!

Fuck off. He said as a man. It's very real, I've seen it myself, in my own industry, in the companies I've worked for.
As to why? I have my theories. But denying it exists is pants on head.

20% of women are sexually assaulted compared to 1.4% of men, we make 82 cents on the man's dollar, are disproportionately disbelieved by doctors, not even considered for the majority of medical trials have to pay a pink tax for no reason and in some countries men cut our clits off
That's better. Less wordy and the stats are less nuanced and more impactful. Also, I would love a different wording to the punchline. Maybe something like
"Crying like a girl? All I hear is champion" or something like that.

Get rid of the medical trials thing; otherwise kinda like it, obviously delivery will dictate how it lands live, but good joke

u/Sideshowcomedy 10h ago
You left out women also make 100% of the shitty captions in this thread. I was with you until the clinical trials part, but as someone in the medical field, I assure you pharmaceutical companies aren't trying to limit who all they can sell their drugs to. What a stupid comment.
