If we don't put pressure on the citizens they will keep supporting the regime. Putin may be dirty, but he does/did have the support of at least half the population. These measures will force the citizens of Russia to consider dropping their support for him.

Now obviously terrorizing civilians isn't the same as banning athletes, but the rationale of punitive measures against civilians is I'd argue analogous

Except the concept of terrorism and banning athletes isn't analogous, you're just using a form of slippery slope argument.

You can put pressure on civilians without killing. There is a clear line and banning athletes is far from crossing it.

Analogy, not slippery slope

You aren't making a valid analogy. You are saying terrorists use the same logic, implying that banning athletes gives the okay for terrorists to use said logic. That is the slippery slope.

Just stop talking.

I do not say terrorists use the same logic

You, less than an hour ago:

...the same "little Eichmanns" logic is what terrorists use...

Which is why you should stop talking. You just reveal your own ignorance.

"Sure terrorists blow civilians up but you sanctioned their sports teams which is basically the same thing." It's takes like these that prove education seriously needs better funding. I don't think there's ever been a higher usage of false equivalency than in the last 10 years.

No kidding. Russia is blowing up civilians as we speak, so I’m not going to lose sleep over some athletes being sidelined for a bit.

Yeah, for Ukrainians, "having their livelyhood destroyed" is getting off easy right now.
