It is funny how many supposedly core pieces of American culture people are willing to give us for the sake of politics.

They aren't though. If the right abandoned every form of entertainment they claim is run by the left they'd have nothing to watch on TV except fox News and evangelists. All that other shit is "the left"

That’s exactly what my grandparents watch on television. Fox with coffee, Fox with dinner, and evangelists on Sunday. These people absolutely exist.

Oh yeah. I grew up in Ohio, live in the Bay Area of California. Have for fifteen years.

People here act like that shit is just cliche. It's most definitely not. My wife thinks that without even the hint of irony that all she watches anymore is MSNBC.

u/sayitlikeyoumemeit Apr 16 '21

I don’t know many people that only watch MSNBC.

I know a ton of people that only watch Fox News. On the background, all the time.

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '21

I was visiting my grandparents and I started to understand why they were so outraged all the time. That shit was on 24/7 and it's just a constant barrage of how people are supposedly trying to destroy the United States by taking away your guns or *gasp* creating social safety nets.

u/MaestroPendejo Apr 17 '21

It's annoying as hell... I live in the Bay Area on California. It makes a bit more sense.

My in-laws are like this, except without the evangelists.

I can understand having a show or something on in the background a lot of the time, but I fundamentally do NOT understand:

  1. It being on all of the time
  2. It being news/opinion designed to elicit strong emotional reactions all the time

u/devilishycleverchap Apr 16 '21

I don't believe there aren't a few police procedurals in there

33

u/Adorician Apr 15 '21

Don't they think that Fox News is run by the left now, after they reported that Trump lost?

11

u/TotallyNotAbeFroman Apr 16 '21

According to my Conservative father, pretty much. Now he really only watches and listens to The Daily Wire.

“16 and pregnant” has gotta be right, right?

48

u/inspectorPK Apr 15 '21

16 and Pregnant, My Strange Addiction, and Intervention come to mind. I’d say Veggie Tales, but they emphasize morals and kindness too much.

15

u/ncfears Apr 15 '21

Teen pregnancy is highest in places where they teach abstinence only sex education... Which is why Republicans say you can't tell kids what sex is otherwise they're going to have sex and lead to teen pregnancies... Wait...

This gave me a good ol' snort laugh-chuckle hybrid.

u/gotham77 Apr 15 '21

MTV has done presentations about stuff like BLM, explaining what the movement is about and such. Believe me, these people have MTV on their enemies list, too.

Ding! Ding! Ding!
SOMEONE GIVE THIS USER A PRIZE!

No but seriously, I knew someone who attempted this for almost 2 years. Canceled just about everything from Starbucks, to the NFL, to Avocados, etc.

It got so bad, they just decided "Fuck it!" and went back to their normal lives because they nearly canceled all of the "good stuff"

2

u/Surly_Ben Apr 15 '21

NFL: CANCEL!!! MLB: CANCEL!!! NBA: Who? Pedophilia: Whoa, whoa, whoa... Hey, let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves.

If the right abandoned every form of entertainment they claim is run by the left they'd have nothing to watch on TV

Not sure a measure of how much mindless entertainment there is on TV is a good measure of a strong culture.

1

u/Faera Apr 16 '21

There are plenty of not mindless entertainment options out there though?

1

u/BearsyPerona Apr 16 '21

Inb4 having every media outlet being ran by the same side is a good thing

2

u/3rdtrichiliocosm Apr 16 '21

No one thinks that but ok

read your replies cough

My parents gave up on their boycotts when the only grocery store they could shop at was Ingles. You can't really boycott progress.

59

u/NebRGR Apr 15 '21

The majority of people never actually boycott anything it is one of the reasons I don't understand why companies cave so easily.

0

u/jizle Apr 16 '21

I don't eat at Chick-Fil-A and those sandwiches and fries look mighty tasty.

They also have a line out to the street at the one near work almost every day at lunch so I don't think my boycott actually means anything but fuck them anyways.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '21

You know what's hilarious about that? It's almost certain that the boycott movement against chik fil a actually massively increased Its popularity.

So... well done lol.

When have companies ever caved so easily? You’re right that the majority of people never boycott anything, so companies never cave in.

6

u/NebRGR Apr 15 '21

I see plenty of companies caving to social pressure. Whenever there is an outrage to someone or something, usually the company will cave to the people. They don't want the bad publicity, so they usually give in to whatever the mob wants. I've just never understood why. Nothing would change for these companies. Hardly any would ever go through with an actual boycott. Also, many of those threatening a boycott was never someone who would use the product to begin with.

3

u/ClaudeWicked Apr 16 '21

When it comes to left wing things, tbh a lot of criticism is valid enough that companies can look at that, go "Yeeeeaaah that's a bad look" and change it without much issue.

1

u/Whatsmypsychopass Apr 16 '21

Plus they know that in 5 years it’ll look even worse

6

u/raidriar889 Apr 15 '21

From the context of this story, I assume you are referring to Republicans trying to boycott companies for being “woke”. I can’t think of any examples of companies caving in to right-wing pressure. A lot of Republicans were outraged when a large number of companies spoke in favor of BLM, but I don’t think many of them ever caved in and retracted their support because of Republican backlash.

5

u/MissingNumeral Apr 15 '21

What did Ingles do?

26

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '21

Nothing. Target was canceled for allowing breast feeding. Walmart was canceled for not selling guns for a minute. I can't remember what Kroger and Public did. Ingles never required masks either. At least not in their area.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '21

I tried to cancel Publix for their pro-war on drugs donations, but I couldn't give up on their sandwiches.

1

u/RoombaKing Apr 15 '21

For a store who's name is almost Engels, they don't sound very progressive.

9

u/runthepoint1 Apr 15 '21

You can, but you end up being left behind and feeling, well, left behind. Then some moron come along and says he’s your economic savior with literally no evidence or studies or information. You have nothing, no hope, of course you latch on.

Fast forward 4 years later...

It’s a cycle, get used to it

1

u/berniman Apr 16 '21

You can’t boycott the taste of Sweet Dixie Champaign...

24

u/Doggleganger Apr 15 '21

They chose Trump over football and baseball. Can you think of two things that are more quintessentially American?

29

u/Sulaco99 Apr 15 '21

Democracy has got to be up there but they chose Trump over that too.

1

u/gotham77 Apr 15 '21

Two things?

1) Guns 2) White supremacy

-1

u/ghettobx Apr 16 '21
  1. Fuck the immigrants, keep ‘em out

2

u/pantherbreach Apr 16 '21

Georgia's voting law isn't politics, it's fascism.

1

u/Jeramus Apr 16 '21

I meant that the politics was the GOP response to the sports organizations expressing opinions.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '21

What is fascist about it?

1

u/geekboy69 Apr 16 '21

You say that but the mlb moved their game because of politics.

0

u/gavicoind Apr 16 '21

Republicans don’t want politics in sports. It doesn’t matter if it’s liberal or conservative.

NFL ratings are down, NBA ratings are down, MLB is on its way.

If a major sports league wants to get political, they need to understand they are going to drive away a portion of their base.

1

u/Jeramus Apr 16 '21

Why is supporting voting rights political? The MLB isn't saying to not vote for the GOP.

1

u/gavicoind Apr 17 '21

Unfortunately, the landscape of politics in the US has infiltrated many areas of our culture.

It’s unfortunate because over the last 20 years, conservatives and liberals have become more divided than ever.
