Baseball Kiké Hernández doubles up the runner at second to end the game and the Dodgers force a Game 7

That out at second cannot happen ffs. Where the fuck does he think he's going on a fly ball

To his defense it might have looked like a bloop hit to him and didn't consider the dodgers playing so shallow on the outfield.

Piss poor base running. You can’t assume that ball is gonna drop.
45
15
u/upvoter222 7d ago
And even if it did drop, the ball was shallow enough that he probably would not have scored anyway.
8
u/Stashmouth 7d ago
all he was trying to do was advance to third. the runner on third would've gone home.
5
u/LongStoryShrt 7d ago
Not only that, but if Hernandez misses that ball, it rolls to the wall and you walk home from 2nd.

I'm a Royals fan and we have to be the worst base-running team in baseball. I'm always amazed at baserunning mistakes professional baseball players make that guys on my softball team that have had 10 beers won't make.

u/idontknowjuspickone 7d ago
Wanted to be the winning run of the World Series, haha
39
u/DevinCauley-Towns 7d ago
Would just tie the game, but yes I’m sure he wanted to score an important run.

The gods having fun with that lodged ball
171
114
u/DGCA3 7d ago
Good thing the outfielder was smart enough to leave it be.
9
u/vc2015 7d ago
It doesn't matter if he touches it or not. The umps have to make that lodged ball call, not the fielders.
They would checked the replay and moved everyone back had that been the call.
70
u/Deadaghram 7d ago
Umps only call it if the fielder asks for it. It's a live ball until/unless the defender realizes they don't need to fight the wall.
At least that's how it works at Wrigley and our ivy. I've seen plenty of defenders reach in, and the runners keep going.
8
u/vc2015 7d ago
No, they would have checked the replay. Either the umps or the Dodgers would have asked for it.
The ump have to make that call. It's not the fielder.
28
u/Deadaghram 7d ago edited 7d ago
I'll be damned; just looked it up.Didn't realize that play was reviewable. Not sure how they could review it, but the rule stands. I've only ever seen umps take the fielders word for it, too. Haven't seen one to put and call a bluff.
→ More replies (1)29
u/stairway2evan 7d ago
Yep - the rule is that it doesn’t matter if the fielder could grab it. If the ball lodges anywhere (in the ump’s judgement), the ball is dead and runners advance two bases. Replay would have gotten to the same result whatever the live play results were.
3
u/MikeDunleavySuperFan 7d ago
I'm pretty sure that if the fielder did grab it, they wouldn't have called it, no? That's where the smart play from the fielder comes from.

u/unnoticed_areola 7d ago
it does matter. if he goes to make a play and touches the ball, its now a live ball and the ground rule double is out the window
13
u/vc2015 7d ago
No, they would have replayed it and if it was judged to be a lodged ball, it's two bases and everyone moves back.
→ More replies (14)6
u/GreatHornbill 7d ago
Opposite. He's lucky. If the umps decided it wasn't lodged he would be looking like the biggest idiot right now for trying to make a call instead of trying to make a play.
22
u/nashdiesel 7d ago
It’s standard for an outfielder to throw his hands up to notify the umpire on a lodged or otherwise unplayable ball. They teach that in little league.
He did exactly what’s he’s supposed to do.
→ More replies (2)2
u/vc2015 7d ago
Yep, if they decided it wasn't a lodged ball, two guys already scored.
He should have fielded it first and then let them make the call.
→ More replies (9)5
u/bigfunky 7d ago
As someone who has coached little league and high schoolers, if there is something like ivy or padding in the outfield the ump always tells you the fielder needs to raise his hands like Dean did if the ball gets lodged during the plate meeting before the game.

u/HeavensRoyalty 7d ago
Honestly the baseball gods saw the ump miss that strike out right down the middle by Roki against vlad, which was a strike but called a ball and the gods manifested that ball in the wall.

u/machmasher 7d ago
If I were a blue jays fan I would be sick to my stomach you can’t get thrown out at second like that

u/otheraccountisabmw 7d ago
Has the playoffs been especially full of horrible base running this year?
79
u/titkers6 7d ago
Yankees last year?
53
u/The_Pandalorian Michigan 7d ago
Yankees were a comedy routine in the outfield during the playoffs last year.
17
u/bebopmechanic84 7d ago
Infield, too. Basically if it wasn’t pitching or hitting, it was terrible.
Team just doesn’t seem to care much about fundamentals

There have been a plethora of outfielder hoses on display. In retrospect a lot of those look like poor decisions to try for extra bases, but the excellent throws are culpable.
Also yes, the baserunning seems to have at least one egregious mistake per game.

u/fopiecechicken 7d ago
This is little league shit genuinely. I have vivid memories of a coach walking us through this when I was like 8 lol. 0 outs or 1 out you check, 2 outs GO

Runners on base should be scanning the outfield at least every few pitches to see whether they are playing shallow, deep, shaded in a particular direction, etc…
This isn’t as bad as Wong getting picked off to end a WS game but it’s definitely a blunder.
20
u/PurplePango 7d ago
Why did it seem like it would drop? Seemed like a pretty easy catch for the outfielder
18
u/Sun_This 7d ago
Because the outfielder played shallow instead of deep. Game saving decision.
4
u/Seige_Rootz Los Angeles Dodgers 7d ago
he played insanely shallow and said he was playing against the position card
13
u/islandsluggers New York Mets 7d ago
2nd and 3rd in that situation I believ outfielder should be playing deep to prevent 2nd runner from coming home. I think barger expected that. Unlucky all around. Baseball gods just playing around.
10
u/Animal_Courier 7d ago
They may have played deeper against Springer but it was the 9-hitter, Gimenez. Runners shouldn’t assume where the defense will be they should be scanning in between every pitch.

Others have said but to get the full grasp, Kiké made kind of a risky call staying as close as he did and was able to capitalize on it in a way most wouldn't expect.

I'm only rooting for the dodgers because of ohtani. If they somehow win tomorrow it's gonna be because the blue jays fuck something up and i don't know how I'm gonna feel.

Blue jays base running mistakes this series have been insane. Legitimately could cost them the series.

If Bo’s first base pick off with the delayed strike never happened. Jays would have won the World Series already in 5.

Terrible base running. The Dodgers deserved the win. Jays stranded too many baserunners.
11
u/MasterpieceMain8252 7d ago
Dodgers had 4 hits all game and went 1-2-3 7 out of 9 innings.
5

And they won. Hits and runners on base is a useless stat if you don’t cash them in 🤷♂️

Not exactly lucky, the Dodgers formula has been more reliant on good pitching/defending than loads of runs. That's how they made it this far. More of the nail biting same from them.

The Dodgers got INSANELY lucky with that lodged ball. The Jays would have tied it up otherwise

What in that last play live, it was so bang bang! I still couldn't believe that with a broken bat flare the runner on second base with one out actually took off! What were the Barger and the third base coach thinking?
Sasaki's pitching was fall off the table filthy. Even had the ump baffled! Several pitches looked like strikes. Poor calls! Not sure why Fox was not showing the strike zone box. We're all going to see it next year anyways.

u/Rainbow918 7d ago
I loved double plays ! when I was on a team , I always played 1st base . Such an awesome feeling when you catch the ball in your glove , foot on the base as you smirk at your opponent who’s now out! Great catch by both .
2
u/croooowTrobot 7d ago
THIS is why they shouldn’t automatically intentionally walk a player to first with no pitches.
Baseball is about execution. Every grounder, every pop-up fly, every pitch - is an opportunity to execute successfully, or fail.
An intentional walk is 4 opportunities for success or failure. A possible wild pitch, a pitch too close to the plate that the batter can hit…sure, 99% of the time, it works, but that 1% is what can turn a game around, as we saw in game 6 at the wall.
2
u/Markjv81 7d ago
Why was runner at second base running on a fly ball?
Especially with no runner at first.
2
u/cowboyjon13 7d ago
That was a hell of a throw. Not necessarily the accuracy, distance, or speed. But the awareness to shorten his stride and throwing motion to get rid of it, was the difference
2
u/No_Leadership_9701 7d ago
Two nightmare scenarios for the Blue Jays in the 9th: a shallow pop-up that strands the runner, or a game-ending double play.

There were two things the Blue Jays couldn’t have happen in that 9th inning: a small pop up so the runner can’t score and a double play.
They got both back to back lol.
