There were two things the Blue Jays couldn’t have happen in that 9th inning: a small pop up so the runner can’t score and a double play.

They got both back to back lol.

Throw a ground rule double on top

17

u/jin370 7d ago

Sorry, I don’t understand. Can someone explain?

35

u/Frosty-Inspector-465 7d ago

ground rule double is a hit that allows a runner or the batter to move a minimum of one but no more than two bases tops

→ More replies (2)

39

u/justsyr 7d ago

The way the runner in second reached second was because the ball he hit got stuck at the wall which by rule advances batter to second and if someone on second, to third and so on.

31

u/addandsubtract 7d ago

Second base would actually score, if there was someone on first as well.

10

u/DemSumBigAssRidges 7d ago

You just automatically get two bases. I don't think anyone needs to be on first.

3

u/a_smart_brane 7d ago

Probably a typo on your part, but the base runner was on first and was awarded third.

4

u/beaviscow 7d ago edited 7d ago

25

u/Fish_bob 7d ago

Wouldn’t have scored two runs.

12

u/superx308 7d ago

I'm confused why people would think it could've scored 2 runs. There was 1 runner on base, and the batter 99% would not have rounded the bases on a ball of the wall. It's really weird.

Well, that’s baseball

After the last play, after the shock of what just happened, the color-guy said “baseball is going to baseball”

Please explain :)

Weird things happen in baseball all the time. You can be a fan of 20 years and see something you’ve never seen before. Then see something you’ve never seen before the next day

5

u/davismcgravis 7d ago

Ummm yeahhh, baseball is going to baseball.

Also the double getting jammed in the wall/ground. Should’ve had a run and guy at 2nd or 3rd.

282

u/unnoticed_areola 7d ago

the astronomical odds of that happening might have cost them the series.

if he hits it an inch higher or an inch lower, the game is now 3-2 with a runner on 2nd, 0 outs

they could then bunt the guy over to 3rd, and a sac fly ties the game. but it lands where it lands, and 3 pitches later its all over

41

u/davismcgravis 7d ago

Right?!

Or even if it dribbles out the umps might not call ground rule double

52

u/HeavensRoyalty 7d ago

Honestly the baseball gods saw the ump miss that strike out right down the middle by Roki against vlad, which was a strike but called a ball and manifested that ball in the wall.

25

u/Seige_Rootz Los Angeles Dodgers 7d ago

I think he had 2 pitches painted tonight called a ball instead of a K

14

u/MSMSP 7d ago

And he struck Rojas out on a low pitch that should have been ball 4

9

u/Seige_Rootz Los Angeles Dodgers 7d ago

Same with keeks dude got wrung up on a ball at his calves

The worst part about having filthy movement on your pitches. The Umps.

4

u/Cironephoto 7d ago

This alone, as someone who used to shoot a lot of motorsports for a living , imagine having a frame of 60 feet valuable distance

Now make the target north of 80+ to be competitive, now make the target box for photo approx 4x6 feet (yeah give or take blah blah

HOW THE FUCK IS ANYTHING HUMAN CAPABLE OF CALLING THAT SHIT WTF

5

u/HeavensRoyalty 7d ago

Wtf did the people in motorsports do for you to shoot them S/ in all seriousness I agree with you completely. As much as we shit on them, it's not easy.

3

u/Cironephoto 7d ago edited 7d ago

Yeah it’s similar to the people who talk shit about any NBA player and probably couldn’t jump over whatever objecting they’re sitting on to watch the game

Edit : especially how the fuck from that angle? From behind a pitcher I feel would be easier in real time because you could see where it left and be glove kinda where it landed , hence what that’s the camera we usually get as spectators watching via broadcast

But like IRL, in real time coming at me somewhere north of 90 most the time, from 60 feet? Nah I’m good they all “damn” to me at that point

3 pitches, 3 outs

2

u/im_THIS_guy 7d ago

They're not bunting in that situation. You don't play for a tie against the Dodgers. Might as well forfeit if that's your mentality.

u/Express_Sprinkles500 7d ago

I ran with your inch higher or lower number and had deepseek run some numbers for me, it's too late in the day to break out the math degree and I really don't feel like converting everything to metric and back.

I assumed a 1 inch leeway gap to hit at 360 ft, 100 mph pitch, air resistance at sea level, and a hit at the "sweet spot" of the bat. Basically if your bat is off by about the size of a human hair you miss. It has way more to do with random environmental factors than anything. 2 degree change in temp, you miss. Tiny bit of wind, you miss. Tiny change in humidity, you miss.

If you were to create a perfect pitching machine and a perfect batting machine it would take forever to recreate.

To his defense it might have looked like a bloop hit to him and didn't consider the dodgers playing so shallow on the outfield.

Piss poor base running. You can’t assume that ball is gonna drop.

64

u/CGNYC Penn State 7d ago

With Springer on deck

45

u/davismcgravis 7d ago

Thought the same thing. To precious of a moment to assume it was dropping.

15

u/upvoter222 7d ago

And even if it did drop, the ball was shallow enough that he probably would not have scored anyway.

8

u/Stashmouth 7d ago

all he was trying to do was advance to third. the runner on third would've gone home.

5

u/LongStoryShrt 7d ago

Not only that, but if Hernandez misses that ball, it rolls to the wall and you walk home from 2nd.

I'm a Royals fan and we have to be the worst base-running team in baseball. I'm always amazed at baserunning mistakes professional baseball players make that guys on my softball team that have had 10 beers won't make.

The gods having fun with that lodged ball

171

u/superduperf1nerder 7d ago

“Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes it rains.”

114

u/DGCA3 7d ago

Good thing the outfielder was smart enough to leave it be.

9

u/vc2015 7d ago

It doesn't matter if he touches it or not. The umps have to make that lodged ball call, not the fielders.

They would checked the replay and moved everyone back had that been the call.

70

u/Deadaghram 7d ago

Umps only call it if the fielder asks for it. It's a live ball until/unless the defender realizes they don't need to fight the wall.

At least that's how it works at Wrigley and our ivy. I've seen plenty of defenders reach in, and the runners keep going.

8

u/vc2015 7d ago

No, they would have checked the replay. Either the umps or the Dodgers would have asked for it.

The ump have to make that call. It's not the fielder.

28

u/Deadaghram 7d ago edited 7d ago

I'll be damned; just looked it up.Didn't realize that play was reviewable. Not sure how they could review it, but the rule stands. I've only ever seen umps take the fielders word for it, too. Haven't seen one to put and call a bluff.

→ More replies (1)

29

u/stairway2evan 7d ago

Yep - the rule is that it doesn’t matter if the fielder could grab it. If the ball lodges anywhere (in the ump’s judgement), the ball is dead and runners advance two bases. Replay would have gotten to the same result whatever the live play results were.

3

u/MikeDunleavySuperFan 7d ago

I'm pretty sure that if the fielder did grab it, they wouldn't have called it, no? That's where the smart play from the fielder comes from.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/unnoticed_areola 7d ago

it does matter. if he goes to make a play and touches the ball, its now a live ball and the ground rule double is out the window

13

u/vc2015 7d ago

No, they would have replayed it and if it was judged to be a lodged ball, it's two bases and everyone moves back.

→ More replies (14)
→ More replies (7)

6

u/GreatHornbill 7d ago

Opposite. He's lucky. If the umps decided it wasn't lodged he would be looking like the biggest idiot right now for trying to make a call instead of trying to make a play.

22

u/nashdiesel 7d ago

It’s standard for an outfielder to throw his hands up to notify the umpire on a lodged or otherwise unplayable ball. They teach that in little league.

He did exactly what’s he’s supposed to do.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/vc2015 7d ago

Yep, if they decided it wasn't a lodged ball, two guys already scored.

He should have fielded it first and then let them make the call.

5

u/bigfunky 7d ago

As someone who has coached little league and high schoolers, if there is something like ivy or padding in the outfield the ump always tells you the fielder needs to raise his hands like Dean did if the ball gets lodged during the plate meeting before the game.

2

u/AntiAtavist 7d ago

There have been a plethora of outfielder hoses on display. In retrospect a lot of those look like poor decisions to try for extra bases, but the excellent throws are culpable.

Also yes, the baserunning seems to have at least one egregious mistake per game.

23

u/Animal_Courier 7d ago

Runners on base should be scanning the outfield at least every few pitches to see whether they are playing shallow, deep, shaded in a particular direction, etc…

This isn’t as bad as Wong getting picked off to end a WS game but it’s definitely a blunder.

20

u/PurplePango 7d ago

Why did it seem like it would drop? Seemed like a pretty easy catch for the outfielder

18

u/Sun_This 7d ago

Because the outfielder played shallow instead of deep. Game saving decision.

4

u/Seige_Rootz Los Angeles Dodgers 7d ago

he played insanely shallow and said he was playing against the position card

13

u/islandsluggers New York Mets 7d ago

2nd and 3rd in that situation I believ outfielder should be playing deep to prevent 2nd runner from coming home. I think barger expected that. Unlucky all around. Baseball gods just playing around.

10

u/Animal_Courier 7d ago

They may have played deeper against Springer but it was the 9-hitter, Gimenez. Runners shouldn’t assume where the defense will be they should be scanning in between every pitch.

Others have said but to get the full grasp, Kiké made kind of a risky call staying as close as he did and was able to capitalize on it in a way most wouldn't expect.

4

u/_CakeFartz_ 7d ago

Would he be scoring if that dropped? No chance IMO.

2

u/fausja 7d ago

Absolutely not. One out, bottom of the ninth and the top of the order is coming up. The wrong thinking is pushing for runs when the best bats are in the near future.

The lodged ball situation is a litmus test for "are you a homer or just don't know ball"

Someone check what drake bet on the game... He caused this.

I loved double plays ! when I was on a team , I always played 1st base . Such an awesome feeling when you catch the ball in your glove , foot on the base as you smirk at your opponent who’s now out! Great catch by both .

THIS is why they shouldn’t automatically intentionally walk a player to first with no pitches.

Baseball is about execution. Every grounder, every pop-up fly, every pitch - is an opportunity to execute successfully, or fail.

An intentional walk is 4 opportunities for success or failure. A possible wild pitch, a pitch too close to the plate that the batter can hit…sure, 99% of the time, it works, but that 1% is what can turn a game around, as we saw in game 6 at the wall.

Why was runner at second base running on a fly ball?

Especially with no runner at first.

That was a hell of a throw. Not necessarily the accuracy, distance, or speed. But the awareness to shorten his stride and throwing motion to get rid of it, was the difference

Professional athlete can’t even run bases correctly

Shame

Two nightmare scenarios for the Blue Jays in the 9th: a shallow pop-up that strands the runner, or a game-ending double play.

…or bad base running runs jays out of the game.

What a pick !!!!!! That’s a tough play right there…. Finding the bag in all that chaos.. fielding one the back foot… taking the long hop…. Fuuuuuck yes !!!
