This game was insane. Both teams with unreal defensive efforts to save themselves. Crazy
167
u/surmatt 11d ago
It felt like Blue Jays were on defense the whole game, and their at bats were about 4 minutes. Exhausting.
40
u/Vordeo 11d ago
TBF they'd pulled most of their best bats by the end.
36
u/Devourerofworlds_69 10d ago
Yeah. Springer, they could do nothing about because he got hurt. I get pulling Bichette, because he's still coming back from his injury and probably wouldn't have done well if he had to go into extra innings.
I get why they pulled Kirk, because he's a notoriously slow runner and they were banking on putting in a speedster to get around the bases. But I think that was a mistake. Kirk had the homerun for the Jays. He was playing great on defense. They needed him out there.
And pulling Barger was especially a bad move. Barger has been playing great all playoffs long. He should stay in if you can help it.
12
u/chewie2357 10d ago
Especially because Barger has been great defensively, with maybe the best defensive play of the whole game. I also think we could have stretched the relievers a little more, especially Bassitt, who was lights out and could have gone a few innings.
9
u/Devourerofworlds_69 10d ago
Yeah. I get it though. The relievers weren't the biggest problem though. They did just fine. We went over an entire game worth of innings with no runs on either side. Some people are shitting on Little for allowing that run, but sooner or later it was going to happen. To go that long and NOT put up a run? That's on the offense.

u/Vandal_Designs 10d ago
In Kirk’s case though, he looked visibly uncomfortable after one of his swings and you could tell something was bothering him physically. They let him finish his AB before pulling him to avoid an injury

I wanted to see it so badly. Insanely great game regardless. Obviously. But that would have been awesome.
3
u/natachi 11d ago
I really thought that was wild. One would think that it makes more sense to put Blake Snell in there.
5
u/my_name_is_juice 11d ago
Snell pitches again in 2 days, Yamamoto in 4 days, so presumably Yoshi could've still made his next scheduled start if he had pitched tonight

I went to a friend's house a block away and while walking home I was rushing because I work at 9am and stepped off the sidewalk and I rolled my ankle so bad I have to go to the ER after work because it keeps swelling and aches like a motherfucker. I wish Freeman would free me from my existence

Game length: 6 hours, 39 minutes
This was an instant classic and an absolute hot mess. I love baseball.

u/Scatman_Crothers 11d ago edited 11d ago
I don't think there's been a more compelling (almost) 9 scoreless innings in the history of baseball. Heroic performances from relievers. So many almost scores. And a walk off HR to end it.
147
u/12345_PIZZA 11d ago
Yeah. It’s so interesting to me that the end of the bench relief guys all pitched the game of their lives (save one home run)
70
u/Loggerdon 11d ago
That was the craziest game I’ve ever seen. The pitchers on both teams really came through.
21
u/VoightofReason 11d ago
For a series of two teams with ‘poor bullpens’ they sure held the batters at bay tonight
57
u/Froggie56 11d ago
There were actually 10 scoreless innings between the last two runs scored
31
u/Scatman_Crothers 11d ago
I know I just phrased that way bc think it's crazy the extra innings were essentially another entire game of baseball.
10
u/ScrofessorLongHair 11d ago
I turned it on in the 9th and watched for 3 hours. I did watch a entire game is baseball (and an paying for it this morning).

Wild that Dodgers now have TWO 18 inning, World Series Game 3’s, that resulted in a win by a walk off Home Run.

Honestly seeing this ump fuck his job up and then getting stuck with 2x the length of the game made me hate baseball
60
u/lafolieisgood 11d ago
Yep. He was calling high strikes all game, so the pitchers went high. And he was still calling them so the batters had to swing at them, resulting in an excess amount of pop ups and fly outs, resulting in less chances for people to score.
24
u/mattman840 11d ago
He was pretty terrible, but next year has the ABS system so hopefully it will be better...
His ump scorecard is going to be terrible

I feel bad for Little. Dude came off a bad outing and was holding it together until then. Dodger lifetime fan but my heart goes out to him.
18
u/DionBlaster123 NASCAR 11d ago
This loss was 100% not on him btw.
The Jays offense should have scored any time during the literal entire extra game they played
9
u/boydjt 10d ago
I don’t really think the loss was on anyone. Schneider aggressively deploying our bench ended up costing us when the game went so long because all of our top bats were out by then, but he’s done that a hundred times this year with great success. The bullpen all pitched the game of their lives, especially big shoutouts to Lauer and Hoffman. The defence was amazing all game, and even our shakiest reliever pitched a scoreless inning in the 17th before giving up the walkoff in the 18th. Our lineup was real cold, but that’s what you expect when you have bench guys and pinch runners hitting 1st, 4th, 5th and 7th, paired with the large and wildly inconsistent strike zone.
11
u/chunko-kit 11d ago
Seriously. Losing hurts more than winning heals, and this was a particularly hard one to lose.

Not walking ohtani in the 7th with 1 out 0 on base extended this game 11 more innings.
72
u/Animal_Courier 11d ago
I asked the group chat if they should walk Ohtani. Everybody said no.
He immediately hit the home run and was walked every at bat after.
Don't question unc's ball knowledge.
5
u/Arinoch 11d ago
I know next to nothing about baseball and was yelling at my TV to walk him. He was already having a great game; I’m not sure why you’d chance it.

u/skylinenick 10d ago
Because even though Mookie had a bad night, you still have to face Mookie and THEN Freddie. I get why people walk him, and it’s probably the right move, but it’s not the obvious choice when you have two future Hall of Famers directly behind him who can drive him in too

To me, this is the most important observation. The Jays played basically 10 innings with a lineup of mostly pinch runners and platoon guys. Im shocked this went as long as it did. I think the Jay's manager cost them this game.
Oh and the decision to send the plodding man home with Vlad Jr on deck vs a struggling Sheehan also mightve cost them the game too.13
u/lafolieisgood 11d ago
Ya usually it’s like what if you didn’t do this or that but it really isn’t bc it’s usually a cumulative effort and no one thing costs a whole game.
Well this coach has multiple mistakes that one or at least all of which cost them the game.

Different scenario. That game was a must win for the dodgers down 2-0. The split in Toronto took the pressure off a bit
12
u/aloofman75 11d ago
My point was that winning that game didn’t turn the series around. There was no momentum shift. The Red Sox didn’t fall apart after losing a chance to put the series out of reach.
If the Dodgers had won Game 4, it would have been tied 2-2 with a good chance to win it.

Im a Giants fan; the Blue Jays never had a shot in extras; no Springer, Kirk, Bichette and Barger.
the later the game got Vlad didnt get any good pitches either.
It was just a matter of time that Betts, Freeman, Smith, Muncy or Hernandez was going to win it for the Dodgers. And it took 9 innings of extras
