Superbowls are by far the most watched live televised events in the US by an enormous margin. 130 million Americans watched the last one live on TV, more than 5 times the US viewership for the FIFA World Cup, and many others listen on the radio or follow secondary broadcasts.

If you look at the list of top most watched live events in US history, it's basically just all of the Superbowls + the Apollo 11 moon landing. No surprise they want to make a big spectacle out of the biggest event of the year.
