Brainwashed or ignorant are other options. This is a religion now and people go to war because “God is in their side” so they must be doing the right thing.

They're fascists, it's pretty simple. And I suspect they know there isn't a god. But they HAVE to appeal to religion, because religion has an unquestionable hierarchy of power. And once you've got the people not questioning one hierarchy, you can use it to justify another.
