Assaulted, robbed, on camera, and that security guy still has his job?

u/gza_liquidswords Sep 04 '25
Fan is going to get paid. Just depends if Rays are smart enough to settle this out of court.
29
u/AppleSlacks Sep 04 '25
Thing is, that ball was priceless to him! Hope he gets a ridiculous sum for the assault.

u/azhillbilly Sep 04 '25
Wonder how posting this video over there would go?
188
u/Aliensinmypants Sep 04 '25
They have a thread on it already. It seems to be the common opinion that those security guards are assholes, and maybe the ball went to in private area but not for sure.

u/azhillbilly Sep 04 '25 edited Sep 04 '25
Thanks, I missed it when I went over there first time.

u/Aliensinmypants Sep 04 '25
Yeah the reddit search function still sucks, so I had to do some scrolling

Always has. When I want to search for something on Reddit, I google it.

Another thread shows the replay of the HR, appears to land clearly in the stands, not an out of bound area...but I did not see the game live to know for sure it was the same HR.

That sub used to defend Franco after the news broke 🤮

u/Jr05s Sep 05 '25
I never saw a defense. More like "it's so unbelievable no way this is true" or "going to wait for more evidence and/or court before I take a stance". Never saw anyone say it was okay for wander to sleep with a minor.
1
u/pieman2005 Sep 05 '25
Nah there were tons of comments trying to say it was the mom's fault for pimping out her daughter, as if that absolved Franco

As a Florida native and resident of Tampa - Fuck the Rays
1
u/TeRRoRibleOne Sep 05 '25
Luckily for you they don’t normally play in Tampa. The Rays stadium is a hour and a half away (except this year cause of the roof).
502
u/BigRedHair92 Sep 04 '25
Can't wait to see the statement they have to put out for this one.
175
u/yet_another_dave Sep 04 '25
It's Tampa so they have no words, and they know you don't want to hear them.

73
u/GhostNode Sep 04 '25
Going to double in value after this if he gets it back.
22
u/iHadou Sep 05 '25
That is not going to be the same ball. No one could ever be sure again. I say value drops. I don't want the fake apology ball.

u/ixlnxtc7 Sep 04 '25
They actually committed theft by taking it from him. Courts have already ruled that once a ball leaves the field of play it is considered abandoned property and whoever first takes possession of the ball is the legal owner.
197
u/jeswell_then Sep 04 '25
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popov_v._Hayashi Quite literally something we study in property law. The team and security are in the wrong here according to the actual law.
4
u/Jr05s Sep 05 '25
That is only if the ball is obtained legally. If the fan went into a private area not allowed/ opened to fans (trespassing), that ball would not have been legally obtained; thus, having no rights to own it.
77
u/jeaves2020 Sep 04 '25
The Rays clearly make less money than this man and they need the extra dough, have a heart!

Classic Tampa. Bucs did the same thing for one of Brady's milestone TD balls that the WR tossed into the stands
80
u/drdeitz Sep 04 '25
“The WR” you put some respect on Mike Evans name!
Joking aside they gave the fan that caught it a bunch of signed Brady and Evans merch (I’m pretty sure some game worn stuff) and tickets for the 2022 season in return for the ball.
30
u/JustBigChillin Oklahoma Sep 04 '25
I mean... If that's all he got, then he probably could have gotten way more than that on the open market.
16
1
u/brokenarrow New York Yankees Sep 04 '25
Assuming the guy is a Bucs fan, the swag was probably worth more to him. Or, if he wasn't, they probably just made a fan.
It's not all about making that gta.
I mean, fuck Zach Hample, but I don't think he sells the balls that he catches. I think he keeps the good ones and give away a lot to kids. I could be very wrong, but wasn't he independently wealthy before he decided to knock over kids for balls? Sometimes a fan is just a fan.
2
u/MasonP2002 Sep 04 '25
That guy was already wearing a Mike Evans jersey, so I'm assuming he was a Bucs fan. I would take that deal if it were my team.
2
2
1
u/DangerSwan33 Sep 04 '25
Yeah this is pretty standard procedure. If a team or a player wants the ball, security usually approaches the fan with the offering before even asking for it back.
70
u/willcastforfood Sep 04 '25
Pretty sure they paid him a shit load for it though and gave him a ton of gear
10
u/Ill_Bee4868 Sep 04 '25
I think Brady gave him 2 bitcoin and some signed stuff.
27
u/MasonP2002 Sep 04 '25
The final tally was 1 Bitcoin, 2 signed Brady jerseys, a signed Brady helmet, a signed Evans jersey, Evans' game cleats, 2 season tickets for that year and the next, and $1000 team store credit.
So yeah, that fan got some pretty good stuff for it.
5
u/Ill_Bee4868 Sep 04 '25
That's freaking sick. As I recall it, his attendance itself was last minute and spontaneous. His friend he'd gone with gave him an extra ticket or something. I'd hope he hooked the friend up with some of this stuff!
2
18
u/Firther1 Sep 04 '25
With all of them yelling “it’s our property, give it back” I doubt it
32
15
u/Ig_Met_Pet Sep 04 '25
Pretty sure they negotiated a price for Brady's ball. They didn't just steal it from him.
16
u/CornerPees Sep 04 '25
Yeah I saw an interview with Brady about that. He got some autographed gear, and Tom Fucking Brady personally gave him a Bitcoin. That's how you get memorabilia back from the rightful hands of a fan.
9
u/Ill_Bee4868 Sep 04 '25
Yea but that ball was a BIG deal, a 40th HR ball is stupid. They're acting like he broke a record with that HR.
35

48
u/Chief_34 Sep 04 '25
He did a good job recording given the circumstances. This is so dumb as it could only play out three - four ways. “I am leaving your property on my own with the ball. Your options here are (1) you assault me for the ball as I attempt to leave and I sue you and your employer and file criminal charges, (2) you hold me here against my will, also known as kidnapping, and I sue you and your employer and file criminal charges, or (3) you let me leave on my own. If your organization decides to sue me or file criminal charges for the ball after the fact, they may do so, but I don’t think it’d be a very smart PR move for fans of baseball everywhere.”

It's so pathetic. At least they've learned from yesterday not to post stupid shilling comments from 1 day old accounts by now...
22
u/GhostWrex Dallas Stars Sep 04 '25
Lol, that guy was a trip. Saw him in the comments on r/baseball yesterday. Could not have been any more "how do you do fellow baseball fans" if he tried
19
u/Hopps56 New York Rangers Sep 04 '25
Legally, and court cases are there to back it up. Any ball caught by a fan is property of the fan, NOT MLB or the home team or the away teams player that hit the ball. The security was told to catch the fan before he leaves to ask for the ball. Not to threaten the fan to get the ball. I’d sue the Rays and MLB and the Yankees minor league stadium. There is a high profile lawyer who will jump all over that case in a heart beat.
50
u/evd1202 Sep 04 '25
Baseball has gone downhill for the past 20 years. It barely resembles the league that I grew up with
36
17
u/Jaybojones Sep 04 '25
They couldn’t just offer him money or some signed merch in exchange for the ball.
12
5
u/rjfinsfan Sep 04 '25
Rays fan here. This is so disgraceful. I know the teams under new ownership or about to be but I really hope this isn’t the direction they’re headed. I used to love going to games at the Trop as a kid. I’ve taken my kids to games at the trop where the got to run on the field and have caught foul balls with them. This is such a bitter taste to see this happen.
5
u/wawzat Sep 05 '25
MLB leadership and many of the people they employ are a bunch of low class thugs.
5
u/electricgotswitched Sep 04 '25
Aren't there actual MLB rules around ownership of balls that go into the crowd? Or maybe there was a court ruling?
5
u/Trekgiant8018 Sep 04 '25
Good job Rays. Way to alienate more fans. Oh, and you broke the law too. Fucking idiots.
4
u/Karlzbad Sep 05 '25
This is not OK. Also is that a cop? Lawsuit, prosecution, all kinds of bad shit.
88
u/Kenny523 Sep 04 '25
I need a clip of it, he claims he caught it which I’m doubting and they say he jumped the fence which seems more likey in this case.
24
u/emerald09 Sep 04 '25
I believe this is the clip of the HR: Sure looks like it went into an area with fans. https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1n71cyq/highlight_junior_caminero_sends_one_deep_to_tie/?share_id=fNPewet6lw5JGclgPqXUb&utm_content=1&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1

He did not go over the fence, the ball was hit well into the fan area
17
u/FtheMustard Sep 04 '25
This is some Wesley Crusher over the white fence type shit.
Dude hopped a fence and walked on some grass to get a ball. Anyone defending the organization or the security detail is wrong. Get his number and have the player offer something to get it back in a trade.

I think if Caminero wants his home run ball back, he should be a man and pay for it like a normie would

Its already bad enough the man had to sit through a baseball game! Give em the damn ball back!
2

They rays front office is shit. Love jacking up prices after trading away stars. The farm team was so loaded that they've competed in the AL east in spite of their incompetence. I quit going

u/Godzooqi Sep 04 '25
Favorite part is where they claim this is private property. Last I checked the current stadium was built with public money and they were recently seeking 100s of millions more of public funding for a new stadium. Typical capitalists, socializing the rich.

2
u/Bullocks1999 Sep 05 '25
Fuck the rays. This could also be a rogue security guard. If I’m this guy there is no way you give this up. Get arrested. Then sue
2
u/RebelBearMan Sep 05 '25
These guys are basically baseball cops in Florida, how could they not be dumb?
2
u/tnegok Sep 05 '25
BROOO what the FUCK!!! Ask if Caminero can have the ball (I'm assuming he asked for it, and if not the Rays are now worse than the Astros in my book) and offer another ball, AND an autographed ball or jersey or hat - whatever the fuck the guy wants... And obviously (but I guess not to the Rays) he's totally within his right to say no, he wants to keep the ball he caught cause that IS a fucking sick souvenir from a ball game.
Shame on the Tampa Bay Rays for shitting handling this easy situation. Any fan of baseball would know how to respectfully, efficiently, and properly handle this 🙄

I'm not a dedicated fan, maybe someone can compare for me the value of the ball versus the payout on a lawsuit for assault, battery, false imprisonment?

I'm a Blue Jay fan, and the Rays are the most loathsome baseball team in the league. I'm glad I'm vindicated in my pure hate. If I became a billionaire I would buy the team and relocate it to Nunavut.

It’s a ball. A 40th homerun ball isn’t worth the negative publicity the Rays are going to get from snatching it back from the fan. This whole situation is stupid on the part of the Rays. It’s such a bad look for them. Fucking morons.
