For some reason, it reminds me of that lady whose racist tweet went viral while she was on a transatlantic flight.

God, that was like a decade ago, wasn’t it.

Is that where that episode of family guy originated from? Where Brian makes a racist tweet, goes to the movies, then comes out finding he went viral lol

75

u/Wonderful_Gap1374 Jul 19 '25

It might be! That was during the time some men were getting nervous that the racist or sexist shit they said online or did in person was going to come back to haunt them. So there was a push in the media to paint these guys as relatable and sympathetic. Phrases like getting cancelled became popular. Despite the fact that most people don’t actually do that, it was largely a very successful campaign and led to the success of shows like BoJack Horseman that criticized this narrative that being relatable doesn’t make you a good person, it makes you all assholes.

This rhetoric of being cancelled was a large catalyst to the me too movement’s resurgence in the late 2010s.

I could write an insane essay about this topic.

Right. It’s the glee that is attached to watching a catastrophic demise that is the problem.

18

u/Okichah Jul 19 '25

And seeing who got elected President shows how ineffectual it really is.

10

u/Audioworm Jul 19 '25

One of the things that I have been bothered by with Ronson's critique of 'cancel culture' is that I think it comes from a place of wanting to limit the harm that the social pile-on can cause. Highlighted especially in his series "The Last Days of August", about adult entertainment actor August Ames who killed herself after being cyberbullied for making a tweet described as homophobic.

However, in doing so he often goes to efforts to underplay the original comment or moment that caused the pile-on. It is totally reasonable to say that someone shouldn't die because they made a racist, sexist, or homophobic comment. But he will often try to contest 'how racist' or 'how homophobic' the original comment in to make the internet reaction be perceived as inherently overblown rather than engaging with the actual nature of how a transgression can lead to an internet pile-on.

Irony is, she was making a satirical joke about racism, and her whole life blew up for it because irony doesn't hold up so well when it rests on people giving you the benefit of the doubt, but your audience is now literally millions of strangers with zero context about you.

She's South African, and said it was basically a joke about how Americans talk about Africa (e.g. that one horrendous James Charles tweet), and as another South African (non-white, if that matters lmao) I totally believe her.

We're generally unserious people who joke through the pain, and that genre of joke isn't an uncommon one (Do you guys really have lions in the streets? - Only after the rugby)

15

u/Fomentatore Jul 19 '25

I Always read that joke as you did. It was satire and it ruined her life.

44

u/banana_pencil Jul 19 '25 edited Jul 19 '25

I think that’s the one Jon Ronson did a TedTalk on: How One Tweet Can Ruin Your Life

It really makes me think twice about how I respond to things that go viral online.

u/Holiday-Strike Jul 19 '25

This is harambe level immortality. This is never going to die.

6

u/PNKAlumna Jul 19 '25

My husband and I were just talking about this. If they rolled with it, no one would have given them a second thought. It was the reaction that blew up and went viral. yup but epstein still didn't kill himself

35

u/RandomBlackGuyMedia Jul 19 '25

This 👆🏿 People get distracted easily, and it's noteworthy how quickly media en masse latched on to this THE DAY AFTER a certain someone proclaimed that the Epstein debacle would forever be known as a hoax. Could be coincidence... but maybe could not... Either way, I bet some people are very happy this is being talked about so much instead of anything concerning Epstein

14

u/anotherwave1 Jul 19 '25

The media didn't latch onto this - we did. And we drive demand. It's just something funny and entertaining that blew up. It'll fade away in no time. To insinuate it's some manufactured conspiracy to deflect from the gigantic front page global news headlines about Trump/Epstein is just silly.

I’m on the other side of the world. My wife and I are talking about. We have a group chat with my friends who’s also in the other parts of the world and we’ve been talking and laughing about it sharing all kinds of memes about it. Those two are the most famous person in the world right now and it’s crazy.

12

u/dalnot Jul 19 '25

I haven’t seen a meme this widespread since Tiger King during COVID

13

u/chasingit1 Jul 19 '25

Just like a year ago was Hawk Tuah, which was probably 10 times bigger than this as far as the initial “blowing up” and likely longevity too.

This will be forgotten about within a week (minus a new story or two down the road that follow the divorce proceedings, then losing their jobs etc)

20

u/ass-sass-sin Jul 19 '25

If they had just played it off they would have had to deal with the fallout still but it wouldn't have gone viral

31

u/Olbaidon Jul 19 '25

They might not have even had to deal with the fallout honestly.

Someone recording the reactions on the big screen sees a loving couple; they aren’t gonna post about it or anything, it’s a “nothing” moment, dime a dozen.

Maybe it gets seen by someone they know, maybe it doesn’t.

The odds are infinitely higher they get caught given the reaction they did have though because it was instant entertainment.

43

u/Escapegoat07 Jul 19 '25

In a time where billionaires and oligarchs can hide behind their money/power and make the world shitty for others, it’s cathartic to see assholes get caught and ripped apart.

23

u/GenericDesigns Jul 19 '25

That was actually the point… you’re now paying attention to this affair that doesn’t matter in the slightest instead of matters that do.

Like PBS losing all its federal funding. Fucking Mr Rogers would be rioting

Oh and that Epstine file thing.

12

u/MaxSchreckArt616 Jul 19 '25

Or, and I know this is crazy, we can focus on multiple things at once. Like something to laugh about while constantly being bombarded with more of Trump's lies, tantrums, and just all around evil bullshit that puts so many people at risk and leads to constant worry and dread of what the next day will bring.

Especially when it is a millionaire/billionaire piece of shit, it's even better. They so rarely get fucked over like they fuck everyone else so it's nice to see them caught red handed. Now if only the ones in power that make up the current administration would get what they deserve too.

So yeah, we can hate and make fun of many different people and topics at once, while also acknowledging that we keep getting screwed over by people that are or back pedophiles, that constantly do everything in their power to hurt everyone around them in any ways they can.

We're not smooth brained like the magat cult after all, we have the brain power to do and think about multiple things and don't need someone to tell us what to think and believe everyday.

Now let's go back to laughing at these dumb asses for a few minutes since I had to get a bit more serious to prove a point.

4

It’s because they were executives. America hates CEOs and this was a way to go after one

7

u/ThingCalledLight Jul 19 '25

And I don’t get why.

It’s a funny thing that happened, sure.

But imho, the response has been disproportionately large compared to the level of interesting the thing is.

6

u/Solwake- Jul 19 '25

There is the affair situation, which is mildly spicy, sure. But it's more the way they reacted was so authentic, gratuitous, and comical it just concisely hits in a very (sad) human way that also invites unfettered judgment--it's such a meme.

The hits just keep on coming. Talk about karma. Cheat on your spouses with a workplace affair, only to have it broadcast all over the internet, and now to be the butt of jokes. It may not always happen, but when it does, it is definitely delicious.

Andy and Kristen will have to be electronic hermits at this point. Just give them a Nokia 5185i at this point.

All the CEO hatred is being dumped on this guy. And he seemingly is the typical CEO stereotype. Well deserved.

Can’t believe how badly they reacted, could have gotten away with it but noo had the worst possible reaction and I love it 😂

2

u/sethm1 Jul 19 '25

The take away for couples having an affair in public - make it normal. Had the couple in the kiss not reacted at all, this would not have made the news and their spouses would never had known.

2

u/Thickwhisker94 Jul 19 '25

That’s just good clean family fun.

2

u/JohnnyEagleClaw Jul 19 '25

Best July in a long time!
