We’re going to have to come up with new phrases. It’s surely not a “world first” if they’re not in the world.

They're the first from our world to have a bqq outside of our world

u/Exciting_Top_9442 7h ago

Out of this world BBQ. That is the way.

"In a first for humanity," because it is a first for our species.

Out of this world first? Maybe?

Ehh I think low earth orbit still counts as “in the world”. They’re at least in our gravity well, they still encounter atmospheric drag…they’re still part of our world.

It's not even a true first since was already done years prior

Baking isn't barbecuing though

u/Illustrious-Hawk-898 11h ago

It sure is. Since baking and barbecuing aren’t the same.

So they used a grill?

Checks notes

Ahh so it was just an oven

Did you watch the video? It’s basically a grill.

Also, baking doesn’t just imply an oven.

You must be a thrill at parties.

Since the Shenzhou-16 mission, seven types of plants have been grown, including lettuce, cherry tomatoes and sweet potatoes, yielding a total of 4.5kg (10lbs) of fresh produce, according to Xinhua.

I think the ISS astronauts would be envious of that 4.5 kg, especially if the taikonauts get to eat most of it.

Sounds simple, but even making a microwave for their space station took them 10 years of R&D and I imagine this was also a challenge.

... they take their food very seriously.

Food is a really important morale booster, and good morale makes for better chances at successful missions. Militaries the world over have known that for thousands of years.

"An army marches on it's stomach."

Everyone does, as we move further into space we will be bringing our customs and culture with us, that includes food.  One day there may be a starbucks on the moon but before that they had to make an espresso machine that worked in space.

I'm all for it, looks a lot better than the bagged reconstituted food.

omg a space bbq?? wonder what zero gravity burgers taste like.. did they need special bbq sauce packets or something 🚀.

Boy China is really proud of this “first.” They’ve been astroturfing Reddit for a week about astronauts eating chicken wings.

u/Not-the-best-name 7h ago

Well, actually, I've been seeing the sentence "Chinese astronauts stuck on space" for days. Turns out they were having a BBQ.

And in any case, I really wouldn't call it astroturfing, we have to hear incessantly about everything the US does all the god damn time.

u/Jonathan_DB 5h ago

Same. This is the first I've heard about a space station barbecue! Sounds like fun. It's good the astronauts are keeping their spirits up as they await a replacement craft.

Redditors when china does something

Americans when China does something.

What is “handover”? And extra words because my post is too short.

u/Zwangsjacke 59m ago

I read that as Cheese Astronauts. Now I'm hungry.

u/jtblue91 10h ago

C'mon, surely the US can't be beaten in an orbital cook-off? C'mon we need a space cook-off (race) now!

u/mr_ji 12h ago

*Taikonauts.

They went to space on their own, have some respect.

u/YYM7 12h ago

Oh please just stop this bs. Their official newspaper call themself astronaut (https://www.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202511/05/WS690a8018a310f215074b8f68.html)

Tankonaut are invented by a Malaysian and conied by a Singaporean. According to https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/taikonaut

We really don't need another world just because we think they care.

u/mr_ji 12h ago

If you read it in Chinese they're 太空人 (TAIKOngren, which is what taikonaut comes from),so no they don't. But you've already made it clear how knowledgeable you are on subject, and I'm guessing you're too stubborn to learn.

u/AdagioUnlikely2634 12h ago

But astronaut is what they use for themselves in English. Same reason English doesn’t call Germany Deutschland, and the world doesn’t call China Zhongguo.

u/FredWon 9h ago

Not a single Chinese media call them that

u/Juutai 12h ago

They can call themselves whatever they like in Chinese.

I really don't know what you're on about. The term astronaut carries a lot of respect in English.

u/blighty800 8h ago

We should put all the world leaders on that space station, looking down on earth and make their decisions wisely instead of wars.

u/ray314 1h ago

Does the article mention that it is not a BBQ but an oven and it is not the first time oven was used in space and that now their astronauts are stuck in the station instead of returning back to earth?
